Hi,

I''m still pretty new here, and I have a question.

I just rec''d a pair of hoops/huggie type earrings and I really like them, however, I CAN''T GET THEM IN MY EARS!
15.gif
I''m so bummed.

I normally only ever wear studs so these are different for me, and I see it''s a shorter, thicker and curved post on these, and it has a little notchy thing on the end that presumably would secure into the other side should I ever be able to get them in.

Anyone else ever have this problem? I''m worried that I won''t ever be able to get them in, which is bad enough because I really like them, and worse because the jeweler gave me a special price but said they couldn''t be returned - although in a case like this maybe they''d let me at least exchange....

Do I just keeping working on them? They go in about 3/4 of the way and stop, and I wonder if that notch-thing is keeping them from going through.

Any advice is appreciated.

thanks

Is the post thicker than your regular stud earrings? Or maybe your holes weren''t pierced straight making it hard to put in anything you aren''t used to?

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I think they are thicker, and they are sort of a wider/flatter post rather than just round. I've worn other hoops, french wires and so forth, but I've not had a pair w/ posts like this before.

Unfortunately, I can't find the usb cable for my camera, so can't take photos.

I'll keep trying. If I just can't get them in, maybe my jeweler can do something w/ them.

thanks for the input!

If it''s an issue of your piercing not being wide enough, I''d just continue to fiddle - the hole/skin will likely expand if you keep messing with it. My screwback studs are much thicker than any other earring I''ve ever worn, and I had to push a little the first time to get them all the way through. Another trick I used to use with my belly button piercing (I was pierced with a smaller gauge than standard) is to insert the post backwards to widen the hole - so try to insert the earring post in the back of your ear lobe and see if you can get it all the way through to the front (or most of the way through), and then when you can do that, you can probably take the post out and put it in the correct way.

Thanks, Elmorton. I did try to put the post in from the back, but I couldn''t. I finally had to give it a rest today, as my ears are all irritated and puffy now, but I will keep trying and hopefully I can get them in eventually.

I had a pair one time I never did get used to. The hook was flat and thick - and my ears just couldn''t take it. See if a jeweler can put on another flatter piece or maybe shave some of these off for you.

This happened to me and my mom. They couldn''t be fixed, so we took hers back. I had my local jeweler fix mine (I think he made the hoop slightly larger by "bending" it).

Have you tried gooping the post up with Neosporin? Whenever I change my nose piercing- a very painful and obnoxious process- I have to do that. It helps some.

If all else fails I''d take them to a jeweler and see if there''s any options.

Hi Everyone,

I did lube them up w/ neosporin, iced my ears and finally got them in last night. Yay!

I got the left one in and I couldn't believe it, then I HAD to get the right one in and it gave me quite the fight, but I prevailed! I'm so relieved. Mulloy's, to their credit, were very nice when I called w/ my concerns. They assured me they'd be able to modify them somehow to make them work, and if all else failed I could exchange. Luckily, it won't come to that.

They are a tight little fit, though, w/ the posts being kind of short, and I think I'll wear them for a couple of weeks to get used to them, and hopefully they won't be so difficult to put in every time I want to wear them - I am too lazy to deal w/ that all the time and they'd just sit in the drawer.

I am glad I asked here, as NO ONE irl knew what the heck I was talking about, and a google search turned up some strange things...(silly , but I will google anything when I am desperate)

Thanks everyone for your help!

I was going to suggest lubing them up with Neosporin, but it looks like you got them!

I have some with shorter posts and they did take some getting used to. The only thing that I have to be careful of is that I don''t clip my lobe when I close the earrings

!

If you find your cable, please post pictures...I would love to see pictures of your new bling!

Hi Diamond Dana,

Yes, I was so relieved, and so excited to finally be wearing the darn things. On my right ear, the post was barely clearing the back of my ear, and I was scared to snap it closed, afraid it was going to pinch my ear, but it was ok. Whew!

I can''t find my cable still, my husband has a new fangled gadget for this, but I don''t know how to use it yet. In the meantime, this is the stock photo. They are 12mm.

Ohhh, those are pretty! I hope you post in person photos as well when you''re able to find the cable.

I always ask things here rather than in real life. I can picture someone looking at me funny when I ask if a 2.5 or 3 mm band would be better. Glad you got them in!

Hi Addy,

Thanks! They are exactly what I wanted, I'm enjoying them - good thing, too, 'cause they are NOT coming out for awhile.

Yes, it seems regular folk don't concern themselves much w/ the all the details and intricacies of gems and jewelry - unthinkable!

Those are very pretty but the posts do look thick.

Hi Marcy,

Yes! And I didn''t think the stock photo would show that. I was worried when I finally did get them in that they would be uncomfortable - I''ve read here about large posts like screwbacks burning or otherwise hurting to the point they just couldn''t be worn. So far I''m not experiencing that. Also, I hope they don''t mishape my earring holes - I''ve seen ladies w/ elongated earring holes and they look painful
32.gif
I think I''ll wear them just enough to keep my ears used to them, but not enough to let them abuse my ears too much! I do, afterall, have other earrings to attend to.

Very heavy earrings are the usual culprits behind elongated holes, so don''t worry too much.

That makes me feel better, thanks!

I had the same problem with some huggies DH bought me for x-mas. I *personally* couldn''t deal with it so I exchanged them. My holes must be smaller (though I have worn screw backs for years

) My earring posts were curved maybe that is why they were uncomfortable.

Sounds like yours are working so that is great! It will not give you an ugly hole. Don''t worry! Can''t wait to see some ear shots!!!

Darn it! I hope you exchanged for something you loved! I never knew this problem was so common.

Ohhh those are so pretty!! I''m so glad to hear that they finally worked out.

I did. I exchanged them for larger, pave hoops which are still *a little* uncomfortable but not painful like the huggies. I am the type of person that if a part of my hurts it is ALL I can think about and puts me in such a bad mood. I guess that is why I hardly wear heels.

I have very similar earrings that I wear 24/7 (even to bed) and I have NO problem with them being too heavy for my ears or elongating them. I am glad you got them in! They are lovely!

Haven''t you forgotten anything? Like, for example, PHOTOS for us?

This is a pretty common problem, and one that we have helped our customers with on occasion. Sometimes, people just have sensitive ears, small holes, or get earrings with a thicker post. You shouldn''t have to force them in, or (even worse) return them! We have been able to simply polish down the posts very carefully. Even a millimeter can make a big difference! Hope this helps. :)
