Good morning all! I'm not expecting a proposal any time soon but, my boyfriend and I have started looking at rings. I fell in love with the second ring I tried on. I have looked at other rings but, I still like this one the best. Before I completely fall in love, please advise if this semi-mount is practical.

It has pave diamonds, not on the side of the bands, but on the front and back. I'll be attaching pictures because I'm having a hard time describing it.

My worries are if having the pave diamonds on the front and back are a bad idea. I don't really see pave diamonds like that and maybe there's a reason for it that I don't know of.

I'm sure the wedding band will have to be custom made to prevent scratching.

Also, I like the thickness of the band but, the width prevents me from closing my fingers all the way. Slight gap in between my ring and pinky fingers and ring and middle fingers. I know this would bother me. The jeweler wasn't in when we had dropped by so I didn't get a chance to ask him if it's possible to decrease the width of the band but still be able to have the pave diamonds.

Let me know if any of you have had experiences with a similar semi-mount.

Thanks in advance!

It looks nice on your hand, but expect problems with re-sizing such a style. It is rare for someone to be able to stay the same finger size over time, so some alterations may likely need to be done creating stone tightness and security issues that you just have to work around. These are not big diamonds on the side, so if a couple fell out, it is not a major financial crisis, but some people can cope better with "problems" while others blow everything into major PROBLEMS. If you can be easy going about little needed future repairs, there won''t be any reason not to like such a style. The wedding ring will rub against the diamonds on one side or the other and either become scratched, or later worn, from moving contact with the diamonds. besides, a wedding band will hide 1/2 of the diamonds when it is on your finger. Diamonds on the top of the engagement ring shank remain visible nd many of these will become hidden by a wedding ring.

I have drawn a cross section of a typical 1/2 round wedding band and a "custom" one that might work well for this ring. It won''t hide the diamonds and won''t rub at the diamonds. You wear the low side next to your engagement ring and the high side outward. Just a thought on how to make it all work. It would not be a truly difficult special order to create such a wedding ring.

That looks really great on your finger! I hope you don''t mind me asking what carat weight that stone was?

Someone else on pricescope has a mount like that and it is gorgeous. Sadly I can''t recall the username or the setting style currently but I''m sure someone else will post it soon. She doesn''t have a weddingband because the profile is like a weddingband.

Oldminer does bring up a good point about resizing, though.

Hello David,

Thanks for the input. I was even considering not getting a wedding band at all if this was the semi-mount I ended up getting. Do you have any actual pictures of the wedding band you''re talking about?

Hi Laila,

The center stone was a 1.06.

Thanks litebrite. I hope someone will post it.

The wedding band I made a picture of is from my mind and not physical. It could be quite different and attractive. Sort of a highlighter allowing the side diamonds to reflect onto and upward from the wedding ring. I have never seen one like it, but it woulnd not be a difficult design to make. It could have a comfort shank or a flat bottom. Flat in this case might be better so it would rest lower, closer to the finger, at its widest part.

Cool looking ring!

Here''s a few observations:
1) if the ring is not comfortable, it might not be practical to remove metal where you''d need it done.
Such a consideration might make the ring a long term problem.

In terms of wedding bands- any ring with diamonds on the side face will have them blocked by a band.
As you''ve already metioned, the rings rubbing together can also be a problem- clearyl more so if there are diamonds on the side, versus metal with no stones. These are good reasons not to have stoes on the side of a ring- however many peple still opt for them

I think you might really do well looking further for styles that are comfortable.

For a band- have you considered a curved band?
