I can''t believe I''m typing this, but I''m engaged!
This is the most surreal and wonderful day of my life!
No pics now because of course my camera''s batteries are dead, but I will get them on here ASAP.
I couldn''t have asked for a more perfect day.
My fiancee (giggle) and I enjoyed this perfect weather here in Chicago all weekend. He was running around working (or so I thought) all day yesterday. (Found out later he went to get my father''s blessings.) He was awfully schmoopie yesterday, lots of "I love you''s" and I caught him gazing at me so much I started to wonder if I had a huge booger hanging out of my nose.
We were looking forward to today, his day off, to enjoy the sun and our plans. When we woke up he smiled at me and said, "Big day today." I started to think...hmmm...but didn''t think today was the day. It COULDN''T be. He''s not good at keeping secrets from me, so I have always assumed he would spill the beans in a thousand ways before the big moment.
We spent a bit of time tossing around a nerf ball this morning -- which was odd because we''ve never done that, but in hindsight I think he needed to blow off steam.
He kept sending me to the grocery store down the block because he had a sudden craving for strawberry pie. Sounded good to me...little did I know he was making last minute arrangements.
We went to see Spamalot...a wonderful silly show. I did notice that he was a little figety and occasionally checked his jacket, but then he put his jacket over my knees in the cold theater, so I just assumed I was reading into things again (little did I know the sneaky devil had switched the ring box from his jacket to his pants pocket when I wasn''t looking.)
I did notice that he stopped laughing during the second half of the show. Which is odd, because, if you haven''t seen it, it''s pretty outrageously funny.
We left the theater...ok, he practically herded me out of the theater. "Gotta go! It''s so beautiful outside we should enjoy the lakefront before it gets cold."
I said, "Sounds good, but I''m hungry." Leave it to me to throw a wrench in the plans. This apparently threw him for a loop because he hadn''t planned on me wanting a cookie. Sheesh. Me and my appetite.
He ran around the nearby 7-11 and grabbed some granola bars and nibbled on his while I wolfed mine down. We drove to the lakefront. My usually calm sweetie started getting really agitated with traffic...very unlike him. It took us almost 30 minutes to find parking.
At one point I said, "You know, we can always come back another time, it''s not worth the aggravation."
"No! We have to go....." Long pause... "It''s so nice out."
So we walked around the planetarium and got pathway along the lake. He sat down and started looking around furtively. "Isn''t it beautiful here?" he asked. He kept staring at a woman who plopped herself down about 10 feet away from us, and heaved a huge sigh when she pulled out a book and started reading it.
Ok, I knew something was up, but since I do read into everything, I thought he was just people watching. At least that''s what I kept saying to myself.
He kept starting and stopping conversation as people would pass (here in Chicago, 70 degrees is reason enough for the entire city to walk along the lake). "Lots of couples here. It''s nice. Great views."
Not a lot for me to work with conversationally, so I nodded and just waited. Just in case.
He took my hand. "You have such little fingers."
Um, I really don''t but I was curious to see where this was going so I nodded brilliantly.
So he whispered, "I have a present for you."
"You do? Can I have it or are you going to make me guess what it is?" I asked. He has a tendency to taunt me with presents.
"Well, it''s smaller than a shoebox and it''s smaller than...well, here."
And he hands me this box I''d seen lying around his place. It''s a little trinket box, larger than a ring box. It looks like it was made from little circles of Play-Doh held together with Elmer''s Glue and it''s really quite...unique. Like if you ripped off a bit of the Thing from the Fantastic Four and made a box.
"I got it on my last trip to Costa Rica and I forgot to give it to you."
I thanked him. It is really an ugly box. Ugly. But so sweet of him to think of me. I was turning the box around and just happy the boy got me something.
"Are you going to open it?"
I started to, but he took it from my hands. "I don''t want you to drop it." So he opens it and inside...
It''s beautiful...as I found out later it''s a 1.78 carat round brilliant with two side stones and then smaller stones about 1/2 around. F color, VS2. Gorgeous. Shiny. Platinum band. The most beautiful, delicate thing I''ve ever seen.
Only after I said yes did he start with all the romantic schmoopie stuff...it just gushed out of him. Then he said, "I should get down on my knee..."
"You don''t have to..." But he did, and grabbed my RIGHT hand. I quickly switched hands. It''s a little too big and we''ll have to get it sized down about .25 size, but I don''t care that the thing is swinging around my finger a little bit.
We spent the next hour just sitting there, oblivious to the world. He was so proud of himself for surprising me. I was so proud of him for surprising me considering what a snoop I am.
We spent the next three hours phoning people in between giggles and hugs.
We''re looking at next spring. I''ll keep you posted.
I want to thank everyone here for offering such support and laughter to everyone. I''m not going anywhere because I want to share in everyone''s stories. I''ll just be spending additional time in the brides-to-be forum.
Blessings and love to all,
Jas (Jackie)
