Got your attention, huh?! :lol-2:

This song by R.E.M. and a couple Disney ones have been stuck in my head for days. It's not a sad song, but I started thinking about sad/mourning/tribute songs that I really like. Not breakup songs, but the ones where the person is truly sad and grieving.

Like these:
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Alone Again, Naturally - Gilbert O'Sullivan
Kintsugi - Lana Del Rey
Maggie's Song - Chris Stapleton (It's about his dog, but it leaves me sobbing.)
Keep Me In Your Heart - Warren Zevon (I don't necessarily love it, but he wrote it while he was dying.)
Terry's Song - Springsteen (I always think of my brother.)

These are all I could think of without google, so what others do you listen to?

Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
Mad about you - Sting
Shape of my heart - Sting
Condemnation - Depeche Mode
Love is a losing game - Amy Winehouse
Jesus to a child - George Michael
Calling you - George Michael
Ancora - Eduardo De Crescenzo
Angel - Sarah Mclachlan
Over and over again - Nelly &Tim Mcgraw
The power of love - Frankie goes to Hollywood
Un bel dì vedremo from Madama Butterfly - Giacomo Puccini

@purplesilk I forgot about all the great operas! I need to revisit them.

Sorry, at first I did't get your request...I posted songs I listen when I'm sad :(

The show must go on -Queen

I used to specialize in “50 depressive hits” to console myself after a break up or other life setback.
Many many years ago I had a real favourite.
Edith Piaf “No regrets”.
I had two seperate notes pushed under my apartment door asking if I could kindly change my play list to exclude it before madness ensured (theirs) or an intervention was deemed necessary and my access to music restricted.

HI:

Time to say goodbye Andrea Bocelli
Helpless Neil Young (KD Langs version is TOPS)
End of the World Skeeter Davis
A White Sport Coat Marty Robbins
Fake Plastic Trees Radiohead
Pretty Paper Willy Nelson

cheers--Sharon

I like the oldies:

Honey, Bobby Goldsboro

Leader of the Pack, Shangri Las

Rocky (Your love is safe with me), Austin Roberts

Last Kiss, J.Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers

Wildfire, Michael Martin Murphy

???????????????????????????????????????????????

i honestly know very few of everybodies choices
i did think of the end of the world by Skeeter Davis but to be honest i never knew who sung it

Bruce takes sad to a whole different level this entire album (except for Sleepy Joe's cafe)

its so sad i dont ever listen to the album version, its about aging and associated themes, i do like the version in his barn with an orchestra, but Bruce has a way of cutting very close to the bone

but this much older one is my 3rd favourite song of all time, but i do not listen to it very much to preserve mental health
and for September 11

you are going to regerete me finding this thread
anyway i suspect this thread has been created with something else in mind

anyway this song was sad because it was about his 17 year old sister who was up the duff and their parents had just moved to California
but her and her husband have been married now for more than 50 years so it was less sad
but recently the actual baby from this song sadly passed away, so its very sad again

How about some Mozart? Specifically since Amadeus basically ripped it off from his sister Maria Anna.

“Paint It Black” by the Stones, especially this line:
“If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes”.

Also, “Old dog blue”.

I love this one

"
I remember when I was a little girl
Our house caught on fire
I'll never forget the look on my father's face as he
Gathered me up in his arms and
Faced through the burning building out on the pavement
And I stood there
Shivering in my pajamas and
WAtched the whole world go up in flames
And when it was all over
I said to myself
Is that all there is to a fire?
Is that all there is
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is my friends
Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
And when I was twelve years old
My daddy took me to the circus
The greatest show on Earth
There were clowns and elephants, dancing bears
And a beautiful lady in pink
Tights flew high above our heads
And as I sat there watching
I had the feeling that something was missing
I don't know what, but
When it was over
I said to myself
Is that all there is to the circus?
Is that all there is
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is my friends
Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
And then I fell in love
With the most wonderful boy in the world
We'd take long walks by the river or
Just sit for hours gazing into each other's eyes
We were so very much in love
Then one day
He went away
And I thought I'd die, but I didn't
And when I didn't
I said to myself
Is that all there is to love?
Is that all there is
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is, my friends
Then let's keep
I know what you must be saying to yourselves
If that's the way she feels about it
Why doesn't she just end it all?
Oh, no, not me
I'm not ready for that final disappointment
Because I know
Just as well as I'm standing here talking to you
That when that final moment comes
And I'm breathing my last breat
I'll be saying to myself
Is that all there is
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is my friend
Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is

Mad World

"

All around me are familiar faces
Worn-out places, worn-out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

[Pre-Chorus]
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

[Chorus]
And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles, it's a very, very
Mad world, mad world

[Verse 2]
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

[Pre-Chorus]
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher, tell me, what's my lesson?
Look right through me, looked right through me

[Chorus]
And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find hard to take
When people run in circles, it's a very, very
Mad world, mad world

Cat's in the Cradle

"

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, dad"
"You know I'm gonna be like you"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw, I said-a, not today
I got a lot to do, he said, that's okay
And he, he walked away, but his smile never dimmed
It said, I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then
Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?
He shook his head, and they said with a smile
What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then, dad
You know we'll have a good time then
I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind
He said, I'd love to, dad, if I can find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
It's been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then, dad
We're gonna have a good time then

Everybody Hurts

"

When your day is long
And the night, the night is yours alone
When you're sure you've had enough
Of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go
'Cause everybody cries
Everybody hurts sometimes
Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go (hold on)
If you think you've had too much
Of this life, well hang on
'Cause everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand, oh no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone
No, no, no, you are not alone
If you're on your own in this life
The days and nights are long
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on
Well, everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody cries
Everybody hurts, sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts
