Hello Pricescopers!

I have been a lurker for a while, but now I am stepping out into the open and asking for your advice!

I recently (May 12th) got engaged. Yay!

My ring is a Tacori HT 2326. The center diamond is a 1.10 ct, with a tcw of 2.2. The thing I like most about the ring is that the center diamond is my grandmother's engagement diamond, reset from the original plain platinum band. So of course, I love love love this ring, and it is already loaded with meaning.
Here is the issue: I can't wear it all the time.

I am an EMT and currently reaching the tail end of paramedic school. I spend a lot of time in hospitals and on ambulances, with tight gloves covering my ring. I am SO worried about the ring, or my grandmother's diamond, being damaged. It is also uncomfortable to wear such a tall ring under gloves.
I believe I have found the solution: wear the ring around my neck on a chain when I am riding the ambulance. Seems simple enough?
But now, where do I turn? Should I pay more for a chain from somewhere say, like Tiffany's? I want something with a sturdy clasp that I wont REALLY have to worry about.
Where should I got from here? Where can I buy a chain? I am so totally lost!

Oh, and I WILL post pictures in a few, just need to work on some formatting!

Why not leave the ring at home when you are working? I would be worried about losing the ring from round my neck. How about you get a pretty band to wear while you can''t wear your ering?

Figures. My first post on Price Scope and I mis-spell something. Doh!

Maybe it''s because my ring and I have only been together for less than a month, but I am not comfortable leaving it off my finger alllllll day. (Separation anxiety, I guess?) Your answer is the most logical one, but with my long days out of the house, Id have nothing bling-y to look at!
At this point, Im not ready to broach the subject of buying a band until we talk about wedding bands. I think I might hurt the fiance''s feelings.

I think I would leave the ring at home, but also I would make sure it is insured. That gives me a bit of piece of mind. Congratulations, on getting close to finishing paramedic school. My husband
did it many years ago and I remember it being incredibly stressful. One grade below 75 and you were out! People got dropped for the craziest things, and don''t even get me started on the proctors.

Good luck, hope it''s easy for you. I ring at home would be far less stressful I''m thinkin''.

I wore my rings around my neck on a chain when I was pregnant. Never had any problems, wore a pretty heavy rope chain. A reputable jeweler will be able to hellp you pick out a sturdy solution. I totally understand that you want your ring with you. But please make sure that it is insured. You do risky work and I''d hate to see you suffer the loss of your beloved ring.

Congratulations.

I would not wear my ring on a chain around my neck, especially when I was working in a handson job like EMT! Leave it at home. I would then get something low profile to wear when I worked. Perhaps a .30ct in a bezel setting like the Tiffany etoile.

Something that occurs to me is that although you can get it insured, if anything happens to it, you can''t replace your grandmother''s stone. So I agree with others who are suggesting that you get a modest, lower profile ring to wear at work.

I would hate to have to leave my ring at home especially when it''s so new, so I totally understand what you mean. However, I have to say that I would not feel comfortable something as replaceable as your grandma''s diamond on just a chain. Any chain can break and you stand a very good chance of losing it. Even though it''s uncomfortable as it is, I would try to wear it until you can find something meaningful to wear at work. Who knows, in time you may get used to the height and have no problem wearing your rings under your gloves.

I wouldn''t wear the ring at all while I''m working, a necklace can easily get ripped off. I would just get a plain band to wear at work.

I am a nurse and do not wear my engagement ring to work. In fact the only jewelery that is allowed below the elbows is a plain gold wedding band. Although we wear gloves for patient contact, it is still not permitted to wear any rings with stones in at work, due to infection control issues. Have you been taught hand washing by applying the UV cream, washing your hands and then checking your hands under a UV lightbox to see how well you washed? If you see how much gunk gets caught in an engagement ring you would die. You don''t want that on your hands passing on infections to your patients, and you certainly don''t want to be bringing it home! Gloves get ripped and are not the solution to everything unfortunately!

Yes even with insurance, you cannot replace a heirloom diamond!

It would be one thing to wear it on neck in a *safer* environment but you are doing a very active job, with patients who can often be less than calm. I am friends or family with a few paramedics and they do not wear more than plain bands to work.

I would suggest a scattered diamond band (my rings are both scattered diamond and it is a nice understated bling but durable) or a small bezel set stone (ie 0.15 - 0.25). Or a plain band can be bought for quite a reasonable price!

As for talking about it with FI - you''ll have lots of sensitive issues to talk about over your lives together. I would hope he would understand your concerns about wearing it at work. And together you can figure out a solution.

There are a LOT of things to catch a chain on while working as an EMT. In the heat of the moment, while working on a patient, you may not even notice it. Much safer to leave it at home. But I do understand
your not wanting too. I hate to be without my ring.

I think I''d be afraid of losing it or having someone snatch it off my neck. I''d leave it at home and wear a sparklie band instead. I understand that you don''t want to part with it, but around my neck would freak me out more than on my finger.

Echo what others say about safety and insurance. But one thing I would be afraid of is the constant rubbing between the metal from your ring and the heavy chain. I think it would "eat away" at the ring and cause some damage. Not sure if anyone can confirm this.

I think ring on a chain is not beautiful and risky. Sorry MMMD...

Leave your ring at home it''s the only solution.

Your ring is beautiful, but I would keep it at home while I was working!

Very lovely ring!
I also work in the healthcare profession as an OBGYN and I have worn my ring every single day! I tend to lose track of things if it is out of sight.
As you can imagine, I have to take my ring off several times a day... for clinic exams, surgeries, or deliveries. I wear my ring on a charm clasp around my neck. Many other doctors do the same. Here are some pictures from Tiffany''s that you might consider.

This was super helpful to me too!! Thank you I''m in the process of applying to med-schools and have been wondering what I would/should do.

Thank you!

Thank you!

This was a huge help! I guess I never realized that the charms have a clasp that can be put around the ring as well. (Not a big jewelery owner, as you can tell...)
I love both of your examples, so I surfed on over to the Tiffany''s website to get a better look. I have pretty solid ideas now, but I''d still like to ''try before I buy''. I guess Im taking a trip to the Tiffany store in Maryland and seeing what they have in store for me to look at.
Thank you again for your ideas!

Ditto! I would be really, really nervous the chain would break (not just the clasp coming undone). Get a work ring to wear or a pretty band instead. Beautiful Tacori. I can see why it would be hard to take off.

I really like the idea of a charm clasp, but is it safe for the ring (in terms of rubbing against the metal, or using a silver clasp with a platinum ring, etc)?

you''re not going to like this but I wouldn''t wear it around my neck - the on and off stuff just makes it way too easy to lose and necklaces can be easier to lose

I would either a) leave it at home while you work and wear a plain band or b) reset it in a way that fits your WHOLE lifestyle and not just your visual preference.

If you''re in and out of ambulances then I''d also vote to keep it at home. All that movement would make it more likely for a necklace to swing out, catch on something, and break. Perhaps the pendant idea is a good one if you''re working all the time just in a hospital setting, but not if you''re on the move so much.

Your ring is lovely but I would leave it at home too. I would worry about wearing it on a chain.

Congrats on your engagement, the ring is gorgeous. Please leave it at home. As an EMT you will be all over the place and having such a precious ring on a chain doesn''t sound safe to me... A patient, could grab you in pain and pull it off... My mind goes to the negative, like what if factors.

Leave it at home , insured. Wearing a simple band makes the most sense to me.
