Jared the Galleria woes

When my dh and I got engaged, we bought my ering from Jared's. Now, it's been a few years and I've learned a lot about diamonds and diamond buying and we're ready to upgrade my stone. Knowing what I know now, I don't particularly want to buy from Jared. We went and looked at stones there today and I left more annoyed. They tried to push stones of qualities that I know I do not want (good polish, visible inclusions, below G colors, etc). That being said, since my original stone is from there, that's where my best financial options are as far as upgrading my stone. My unhappiness with my current stone lies in the polish. It's "good" and looks so dull and it makes me sad. What would you do? Do I have other options I don't know about yet?

How big is your current diamond, and what is its clarity grade? One possibility, if the cut is less than optimal, is to send it off to Brian Gavin for a re-cut. I'm not sure what the limits are for a re-cut, i.e., whether there's a minimum starting stone size. Do you have a cert that shows all of the angles etc.? That would help determine whether your stone would benefit from a re-cut. You'll lose some carat weight, but you could end up with significantly improved performance. There's even the possibility that the re-cut wouldn't significantly impact the stone's diameter.

Perhaps someone else can chime in on whether it's possible to send a stone in for just a re-polish?

BTW unfortunatly, we've seen laments like yours before.

A recut isn't really on the table. My stone is a .71 and we're also planning on upping the size to 1-1.25.

Hello,
I bought my diamond from Jared's four years ago, prior to my knowledge of Pricescope. That being said, I feel fortunate with the diamond I bought and don't ever want to part with this diamond. (A couple years ago, I returned a H&A diamond I purchased from a Pricescope vendor, as the H&A patterning on the Jared diamond was far better and believe it or not the Jared diamond well out-performed the Pricescope vendor diamond.) I picked the Jared diamond from their online database of loose diamonds from home. If you do purchase from Jared again, I would suggest searching their loose on-line database from home, and then have them bring in the diamonds that YOU select to look at, and bring an idealscope with you to view diamonds. I know from my experience it is possible to get a good diamond from their database, it will just take some extra work and time on your part.

Thank you for the positive feedback! I'm definitely going to keep looking. We're going to try a different Jared location. I know what I want is out there and I'm just going to have to be persistent.

NOOOOOOOOOOO CUT YOUR loses with jared and move on. Some o the PS vendors miight take your stone as a trade in but really.....make it into a pendant and start over here Decide on budget (size) which we see above color and clarity and we will help you find an amazing stone for yoru budget. When you find a stone you can also go to the tool bar above and PS vendors will make you an offer for your Jared stone. Don't expect much . Is it GIA stone even with good cut ..

I personally would not keep upgrading with Jared because I think you may be paying too much twice. But if you do, I agree that you should be the one to pick the stones for them to call in. We can certainly help you if you want to list some stones. If you want a stone that is close to ideal cut optics, stick close to these parameters:

table: 54-58

depth: 60-62.3

crown angle: 34-35

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

girdle: thin, medium, or slightly thick

I'd want GIA Excellent cut, polish, and symmetry.

Once you identify some stones and know the prices, you can come back here and we'll show you comparable stones to see if the deal is a good one or not.

There are other dealers who will give you a price break if you trade up with a stone bought at Jarad's. If all else fails, you can sell it yourself and use the money when you buy the new stone.

The problem with Jarad is that you overpaid for this stone and will be overpaying for your second stone, so even though it looks like they are offering you a better deal the numbers don't necessarily work out. You end up simply overpaying a little less. The correct way to compare would be to look at all your options, starting with just selling this stone in a hurry for as much as you can get and buying something from a bare bones vendor like Blue Nile. I wouldn't be shocked if you end up paying more with Jarad's, both for the low quality stones they were trying to push on you and the nicer stones you see online.

Do you know about diamond memos? Most jewelers subscribe to one or more services where they list all the stones they actually own. They can call in any stone on the list. That's what Cricketcat did. The problem is that Blue Nile can probably call that stone in as well, and they will sell it to you for a lot less.

Try this. Find a stone you like in Jarad's database, then try a Pricescope search. Set the parameters to match the stone as exactly as possible. See if the exact same stone is in there, and see how much less you can get it for.

+1
I also agree that you should cut ties with Jared... the odds of you finding a good stone without overpaying are slim. The SA's there have no clue what they're talking about when it comes to diamonds and jewelry (ironic, as this is what they sell). :|
