Hi everyone,
I posted this on another forum. I will copy and paste my thread, I’m hoping there will be some Canadians here that can help…
Hi everyone,
I recently sent my ring to a jewellers (with very good reviews) to get a new setting made as my original prongs didn’t sit high enough and we’re curved in, I also wanted a new band on the ring as the one I had was poorly made and the sides of the ring were uneven. So we both agreed on going custom so that it would also sit flush with my wedding band. This was going to cost about $1400 and I could add the money I made from my original gold towards this. I thought a bit steep but I figured because it’s custom made that was the norm. I did first look at stock setting but she only had 1 option and I was not fond if it.
Fast forward 2 weeks later and I email her following up about photos of the CAD and she tells me that she used my original ring but just changed the head (taller prongs which is what I wanted), and sized the ring up 1/4 size (as per my request). Not only did she not consult me before using my ring and not going custom, she said the price is $1,035 plus tax. I also want to note that I was very specific in what I wanted and I specifically requested that the prong shape/pattern hugging the diamond would stay the same as my original. The prongs are facing a different direction than what I had asked for.
I am feeling so frustrated that she did not consult me before doing this. She essentially used my original ring, and added a head and sized it up a tiny bit and is charging $1,035. Am I wrong for being this upset?
I do have emails where we both agreed with going custom made and price, and her saying it can take more than 3 weeks.
The jeweller responded back to my email where I questioned the price for basically re using my setting and making minor tweaks without asking me first. She said she accidentally made a “calculation error” and the new price is $735 and that she is willing to work with me to make adjustment to the ring…The ring that I did not want incorporated into the new one. She also said that the 18k head from my old setting only made $16.95 to go towards the ring. I honestly do not even know what to respond back, I have no words at this point. $735 for using my original setting and making a few tweaks such as adding a new head and sizing up by 1/4 size does not justify the cost of this especially since I only.
Spoke to the mananger who just made excuses for the jeweller saying there was miscommunication. Which is completely false as I was very specific in what I asked for.
I asked for my deposit back as I have no intention working with them anymore. They’ve lost my trust. I will be receiving back my loose diamond, my ring (with no head as it was melted down and apparently only got back $16 for 18k gold head) yet she was going to charge me 735 plus tax for a smidge of sizing up and a head… I don’t see the justification in their pricing even with labour accounted for.
so basically I’m going to leave with a loose diamond and a deformed ring until I can find a good jeweller. I’m so disappointed.
does anyone here happen to know a good jeweller? I am in Canada in the GTA.
