Hi! I hope you ladies can help me. Everyone always sounds so knowledgeable on this site!!![:wink2:

Here is my situation. I got engaged on Thursday. yeah :-). I have rather big knuckles and skinny fingers so the ring is tight getting it on and off over my knuckle. Not being very knowledgeable in natural swelling, I tried to take my ring off after a night of drinking and right after I got home from the gym. Now I know this is prime swelling time. Instead of slowly and carefully prying it off, I tried to shove it and pull it straight off. It worked, but it was painful and caused my knuckle to swell. Not wanting to be without my ring I got it back on before it was too late. Needless to say, now I can''t get it off. What should I do? Because my fingers are skinny the ring fits fine (it spins less than usual :-) ). But I need to get it off to clean, workout, etc... This happened Saturday and it is still swollen (although not quite as much). I''ve soaked my hand in ice water for ten minutes on numerous occassions to try to reduce the swelling. By the way, does ice water hurt diamonds??? Any advice? I also don''t want to get t off and then not be able to get it back on!!! How long does swelling on an injured knuckle usually last? I am worried I will hurt the diamond by having it on 24/7!

Also, weird question, but could wearing the ring be hurting the healing? It doesn''t feel heavy but it is a bigger diamond (4 cts) so maybe my hand isn''t used to it and could be putting pressure on the injury? I don''t know. I want to tak the best care of it I can and this is so frusturating!!! Thanks so much in advance for any help

Ice water won't hurt your diamond. You may want to try an over the counter anti-inflamatory medicine. This may cause the swelling to go down on your knuckle, enough to get the ring off. Try to use oil or vasaline to coat your finger, and then dip it in ice water and see if that works.

Edited to add: I just re-read your first statement. Re-shanking may not be necessary for you once the swelling goes down on your finger. Usually the hinged bands are best for people with arthritis or who'se knuckles are larger and have thin fingers.

I injured my knuckle on New Year''s Eve when I was shutting the truck of my dad''s car and my fingers got bent backwards in the handgrip rather than sliding out harmlessly like they are supposed to (Ouch! Never shutting his trunk using that grip again!). Anyhow, I immediately removed my ring before my knuckle swelled up. I spent the evening soaking my finger in ice water, which I''m sure helped reduce the swelling.

I just this week have been able to wear all of my rings on that finger. So it took 5 weeks for the swelling to completely disappear. Hopefully your knuckle was not injured as badly as mine, and the swelling goes away quicker, but it could take some time.

Thanks for the advice. I have been taking an advil a day but still too swollen to get it off. I am going to give it another day and then try the floss. But I want to be able to get it back on... I''ll look into the over the counter anti-inflammatry. Do you think that will work better than advil?

As for pictures, I want to post one but I can''t seem to take a good one. I''ve tried turning the flash off but it still won''t really work. Any suggestions on how to take a good pic???

If it''s that tight, I would recommend you get it sized up and get a horseshoe sizer put in it. Jazmine has one in her ring because she also has large knuckles and thin fingers. Here''s the address of the thread with pictures:

I use Windex quite often. The best thing I''ve found yet.

Advil (Ibuprofen) is an OTC anti inflamatory. If the advil is the regular 200mg/ each then you could take 2. Prescription strength comes in 400-800mg so that dosing is not unheard of. I am a nurse, can you tell? lol. Anyway...have you tried lotion or butter? I am always able to get my rings off with lotion. I sleep with mine on, and my fingers are always swolen in the AM but I do not usually have a need to take them off right when I wake up.

Ice water, windex, holding your hand above your head, etc. BTW, I can think of worse problems to have than getting my 4ct ring stuck on my finger, hee hee...sorry, not poking fun, just being cheeky! Hope your finger swelling goes down soon and you''re able to resolve the sizing issue.

If your not alergic to it try some voltarn emul gel to reduce the swelling

Otherwise have you tried gently moving it off with your hands really wet and soapy I find that helps when I things are a little tight

ETA: have you tried sticking your finger in your mouth and half sucking/pulling it off it off be careful you don't sallow the ring though

I noticed you had two threads for this topic so, I''m re-posting my response here since this thread seems to be more active...

I have the exact same problem with my rings. My fingers are skinner than my knuckles and I have a lot of trouble getting them on and off. I always need to use soapy water or windex to help me get them off (how sad is that). If I get them sized any bigger, they''ll be spinning all the time (I hate that). At least now, they don''t spin too much. When I first got engaged, I had sizing beads put on the inside - they worked like a charm and my ring was always facing up. However, when I would try to take my ring off, the beads were extremely painful so, I had to have them removed.

I think ice is the best thing for the swelling, but definitely try using windex as well. Even my jeweler recommended windex for me.

All I am gonna say is 4 carats? Why haven''t we seen pics of this beauty, will you be posting them soon?

Thanks for all your advice!!! I waited for the swelling to go almost down and then last night I used Windex. Thanks again. It is such a relief :-). Hopefully I can get it back on

I would love to take pics but can''t get a good one. Any picture taking advice besides turning off the flash???

Yea!!! So glad to hear that you got it off.

You might want to consider getting it resized a bit bigger.

Try using the macro mode, which is that little flower symbol. It''s great for close shots, and we def need to see them!!! Glad you got the ring off! Now show it to us!

Gorgeous! I think probably what happened was that your knuckle was swelling in an effort to get closer to the rock. It was all "If I can juuuust streeeeeetch a leeeettle more, I can touch that beeeeeauuuitful diamond!"

Yup. That''s probably what happened.

Congratulations on your engagement!

Though I am glad you managed too I know I stress when rings feel too tight.

Congrats on your engagement we definitely need more pics though :)

your ring is beautiful. i''d seriously consider having it sized up a bit and then adding a butterfly spring/horseshoe sizer so you can get it on and off comfortably. there have been gals here that have had to have their settings cut off and the setting is ruined and that would be a sad thing to happen to your lovely ring.

Another vote for the horseshoe sizer - it''s the only way any of the women in my family can wear rings. You won''t be able to see the sizer when the ring is on your finger, but it will spring in close to your finger to keep the ring snug. Then when you try to take it off, it is pushed back against your knuckle. So your ring is the right size for your knuckle, not your finger. Caution though - they''ll have to size your ring up a half size or so for the room the sizer takes up. So you would have to go up probably closer to a whole size to get the room you need for your knuckle and the sizer.

Wowza!! that''s gorgeous!!!

I posted more pics in the Show me the ring section! Thanks so much for the advice! The swelling is pretty much healed now :-)!!!
