Just purchased this blue-green spinel and it should be here Wednesday: https://www.finewatergems.com/store/p354/2.65_ct_Burmese_Blue-green_Spinel.html
Is there anything I should expect based on the photos? I'm sure the cut is great. Gary said it's pretty dark, but if it's anything like the hand shot taken outdoors, think I'd be quite happy.

By the way, he's offering 25% off any purchase now, so don't have to wait till Friday, just ask him for a code.

Expect the studio picture to be the worst case
Hand shot picture is the best case
Reality (most of the time colour) will be somewhere in between.

Thanks Chrono! Somewhere in between would be pretty good, I think.

Very pretty stone! Blue-green spinels are hard to find, especially those that aren't overly-dark. Gary's cutting is super.

It’s a really pretty dark teal. It looks like it will be dark, but not too dark. What are your plans for it?

Based on how stones generally behave, the last (daylight) photo is probably what you'd see when enough indirect daylight hit it to light it up. It's possible it will light up a bit more than that since there's a lot of extinction in that last photo and well cut spinels can generally light up fully if given enough light (even the darkish ones).
Indoors, it will most likely be as others have said, between the two or more like the studio photos.

Thanks guys! Over the past few years, I've bought and sent back at least half a dozen spinels because they were just too dark or poorly cut, or both. Hoping this one works out. It should be here tomorrow!

Chatoyancy, I'm hoping to eventually have an RHR made with it, but no specific plans yet.

Congrats! Post tomorrow with your impressions of the spinel when it arrives. I hope it is a lovely as pictured.

Can’t wait to see pics when you get it! I’ve eyeballed a few of his stones but haven’t made a purchase just yet. I’m curious to see how it compares to his photos. Hope you love it!

Have you gotten it yet? I'm curious to see what you think.

Unfortunately, missed the mailman yesterday, now have to wait till tomorrow.

Well, it's here and I'm really liking it! It's hard to photograph and changes color from more green to more blue. It almost completely blacks out in direct sunlight and in the shade, but still holds som color in most lighting. Even under the bathroom lights, it's more steely gray than black. Really love the cut too! Please excuse the dry hands, my pup makes a much better hand model.

Your dog is so good! No way mine would sit still long enough to model.

It's a pretty color for sure. If you don't mind the blacking out in the sun and you really like how it looks in the lighting conditions it will be in most often then it's probably a keeper.

Do you have a setting in mind?

I'm with @StephanieLynn in regards to the dog. My dogs would look at me like "what the hell do you think you're doing, lady?!" You have yourself a good dog.

I think it's a pretty color spinel. It's a bit dark but if you like it that's all that matters. I have a gem that blacks out in direct sunlight too but it doesn't usually bother me because I'm not outside all that often anyway. :lol-2:

She just got tired of waiting for me to stop taking photos and fell asleep, so I took advantage She wouldn't normally stay still for that long.

The stone is definitely quite dark, but I think I'm happy with the color. Still want to see it when the sun is down, but definitely leaning towards keeping it. As for the setting, I only have a pretty vague idea at this point. I'm thinking an RHR and since my ER is haloed, something other than a halo. Perhaps a 3 or 5-stone? Not sure yet.

I don't know, I think you have a rival for the stone there, as it really goes with her fur tone.

It may be dark, but from time to time, I like stones like that - they're mysterious, sultry and subtle, definitely sneaking up on you sometimes and then smacking you with its color. I say everyone should have a stone like that in their collection. =)2

Thanks for the pictures. I think the stone is a lovely color and like Steph said if you don't mind it blacking out in sunlight then it seems like a great stone for you. I love the shape/cut of the stone and it's a nice size as well.

Hah, I'd say it actually turned out better than what the vendor images suggested it would look like. Nice!

Beautiful!! Btw, my dog woukd have picked it up by his tongue and ...well..bu bye!

IMG_2266.JPG Thanks again for all the comments on the stone! I took it with me to work today and was surprised by how nice it looks under the fluorescent office lighting, especially considering that this is where I'd be looking at it the most.

WOW the cut and variety of colors it shows off are lovely! Congrats!

@alene any plans on how you intend to set this?

I ADORE this colour so much! Honestly the only reason I haven't headed out to try and buy a few more in this colour is the fact that I've exhausted my personal jewellery budget for now!

Same issue here, no budget for a setting for the next few months! Hoping to get around to it later this year. No specific plans yet, I'm thinking a 3- or 5-stone, will have to see what the budget allows.

I think it’s beautiful! I agree that it looks great with your dog’s fur color. You should buy a sweater that color!
