Just Set My Mystery Stone- Guess What It Is!

I just got this set by DanielM on Etsy. Daniel and Caren were great to work with, I will use them again.

Can you guess what the stone is?

I asked for the tie tac prong to be at one end instead of the middle, that why it's a little cudgy. And Daniel and I agreed that claw prongs were not right for this application.

It's 11mm x 11mm, and I bought it from Barry. Photos are very good for color, but it's a tiny bit more yellow in RL.

If you know because of insider info, like a past post, wait a little while and give people a chance to guess.

I know, I know... :appl:

Tie tac looks really neat. I'm sure DH will like it.

Hmmm, I don't know. It is cool looking though.

iLander, how long are you going to wait to tell me? :naughty:

I'm off to look at ACS now to try and figure it out... :))

What does it look like to you, BBG? Take a guess . . . :naughty:

I'll play.....smokey quartz?

It's pretty! Andalusite maybe?

I'm with Packrat. I think its andalusite.

doesnt have the warm tones I expect in andalucite. I think its vesuvianite, or maybe a moldavite

Either smokey quartz or what they use to call rauschtopaz.

One of the possibilities, presented thus far, is correct. :appl:

Moldavite

YUP, that's it TL. Leave it to you and Vapid to spot it.

What gave it away?

Moldavite

wow- and not even a question mark? I'm impressed :geek:

For those of you that don't know moldavite, it's actually GLASS!

But it's an interesting form of glass. When a meteorite hits the earth, the heat causes the dirt and sand to become molten, fly up in the air and fall back to earth forming bits of glass. For further reading:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moldavite

Barry tested it, and it has a very slight magnetism, as well as the elongated microscopic bubbles that are indicative of moldavite. Barry's site is a treasure trove of weird goodies.

I got it for my DH because it's just a cool story.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that DanielM managed to set this piece of GLASS without scratching it or breaking it. After seeing what the other supposedly "professional" jeweler did to that demantoid garnet, we should all realize there is no excuse! Daniel managed to set a piece of glass, without incident. Daniel said that claw prongs would put too much pressure on the glass and could break it, so we went with regular prongs.

Hope the postman manages to get it here without dropping it!

Interesting tie tack iLander. You reminded me of my poor demantoid garnet. I did filed a BBB complaint and the company replied that I am an angry and unreasonable woman trying to extort money from that company, and continued to say I am making liberous comments against them.

WOW, so sorry about that, LD. It still bothers me, too. :blackeye:

Complete jerks. :nono:

Ooooooooooooooooooooooh I wanted to play! ;(

My first thought was Moldavite but then you said it was more yellow and so I hesitated! I've got a Moldavite ring as well but it's a real bottle green - what colour do you see in yours?

Great tie tack and I'm sure your DH will adore it.

I guessed right (had to scroll down to confirm). I have a moldavite stone just that color! Love the setting.

I was on Etsy and wondering who ordered a tie tack, so it was you! Sorry I sort of did a mini threadjack earlier.

I was too late to play but at least I guessed right. Very nice piece.

The apparent low RI, like glass, and the color. Daniel M did a superb job setting it, as you said, it's setting glass. That's difficult!

I agree, TL, it is basically a hunk of glass, and I was holding my breath the whole time. . .

Oh, how interesting! I would never have guessed.

It's funny, I was just wondering the other day how people can tell glass from crystalline gemstones by looking. I'm honestly not sure I could spot regular glass, let alone lead glass. Clearly I need to work on my eye.

Congrats on a unique and unusual piece!

This is actually kind of funny. "rauch" is smoke in German. "rausch" is drunk. I like the idea of drunken topaz!

For the longest time, I could not figure out what's a "tie tack" until it finally dawned on me it's to be worn on a tie. Duh! I was wondering why there's only one earring and why the earring back looks so weird.

LOL. Which reminds me, we need tie shots, iLander! :naughty:

   , flygirl!

(Remember, I am not above raiding old posts for those pearl neck shots and playing "guess that weight" ) For everyone else, that's a reference to a slow-to-start thread I have going over in Pearls.

I think it's pretty funny that I bought a tie tack for a guy that wears a tie once a year, but he doesn't really wear any other jewelry.

Meanwhile, I've done my part by buying something for the impossible-to-buy-for.

I am resigned that sooner or later, he will break the stone, but that's how it goes. I will look at it like "Now we have two moldavites!" :D
