I once bought an ammy from Amethystguy, set in a bracelet that I never wore (the setting was not a good idea); I want a second one to reset them into earrings. Where are these guys who traded in them? I think the cutter was Elliott, don't remember if it was first or last name. It anyone is planning to sell a round JXR, give me a holler, please.

Haven't seen too many JXR's lately.

Me neither, Chrono. I have two, similar but different sizes, thinking of even recutting one, then thinking, wait, who'll invest into recutting quartz? The best thing about them, they look untreated, unlike stones from other locations. Ah, well...

What is JXR?

Jackson Crossroad (in the state of Georgia, USA).

Hi, Lisa. Either one that would be a match, or two for earrings.

You have a beautiful stone!

George Elliott was the cutter I knew who dealt in them from time to time, but there were a few guys more on the mining side, Ken and Jason, floating around. I think the owner (Rodney Moore) sold off the property and it may no longer be actively mined, which would explain the recent dearth....

Thanks. I was offering it up but I don't think it is the size you need. But good luck in your search! :)

This explains many things. Hope Rodney is doing well. I shall try to find some of old timers. :)

Check DJraregems - they offer many amethysts from USA locations.

There is one on Earth’s Treasury right now, though I personally prefer his current Four Peaks and Uruguayan stock.

Here is a killer JXR crystal, with red and blue flash. This is Michelle Matthews photo, that she took with Rodney at the mine, way back in 2007 or so.

Did someone say....JXR???
The purple caped crusader is here.....still....aka. Amethystguy.
Arkteia..aka..Crasru?..or something like that...
I have been searching for the pics of that piece you got from me. 7.9ct port round, set into that custom bracelet. The bracelet was so artistic and beautiful, tis a shame it didn't function for you well.
If you recall, I had photos of the day I found the rough the stone was cut from...at JXR.....then I had pics of it prior to cutting, pics of it as a finished stone, then pics of it set into your bracelet. It was awesome to have the life story of this little purple stone....
from birth(finding it)...
to death...umm..errr...that sounds bad..LOL...from start to completion...yea..sounds much better.:nono::snooty:

JXR is not doing to hot these days.
The owners now require everything dug at the mine to be shown to them on your way out, so if it's worth over $500, they now reserve the right to keep your self-collected and self-dug crystals, and will split the profit off the sale, of your self-collected crystal, mind you, after it's been sold off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big uproar about it going on now....Terry would have never done that if he was alive. What the current owners don't realize is, people want to keep what they find, regardless of what it's worth of how much it sells for. People dig rocks for that reason...if they wanted it sold and given money for, then they would most likely just skip the digging and buy what they wanted.
On top of all this, it's like $50 bucks as an entrance fee now!!!!!!!! I used to pay $20, when I didn't dig free, and did so for almost 10 years now. The mine is not open, except on specific digging days throughout the year.

As far as Four Peaks, and Uruguayan material goes, the latter has great quality material, that is perfect for the average amethystine collector. Nothing fancy with Uruguay, just large 30ct+ clean pieces of rough with a decent color. They heat to oxblood and Madiera very nicely though.
Four Peaks is always zoned and lackluster in color, in my opinion. The secondary red color, common in that amethyst, gives the purple hue a very washed out, metallic look. Having been mentored by the amethystking(rodney), and then being christened "amethystguy", allowed me to have handled numerous types of purple quartz from around the world. I have handled and scrutinized kilos and kilos of four peaks material(rough), sold a few cut stones, and have yet to see four peaks amethyst that caused me to take note. I am sure there is sme out there that is top notch, but they must be few and far between.

The hot stuff these days is Ellis Mine material. Like I mentioned before, it's the top stop for amethyst these days. The best luster, clarity, and color, come from Ellis Mine. Granted, JXR material, as well as a couple other mines around the world, produce amethyst just as good as Ellis, but they are few and far between. If JXR pops out a top top piece, then it took 100 pieces to find that one. At Ellis Mine, it's more akin to 1 out of 10, or 15, crystals found are top notch.

This is the finest colored and nicest piece of rough I have ever seen from Jackson Crossroads.

Here is Rodney during the filming of Cash and Treasures on the Travel Channel. Also, it's the reason why I found JXR and crystals/gems to begin with.

The most expensive amethyst Rodney dug up at JXR, before Terry took over, sold in Tucson for over $12,000 years ago, when he first mined it. Of all the JXR pieces I have handled, none has been as pricey or as nice as this Ellis. The price is $35,000
Granted, the specimens sell for more these days, thanks to Terry, they still don't hold a candle to Ellis material.
That Ellis cluster below, would fit into the palm on one of my hands.

here is a nice colored Ellis, that was dug during the last dig there.

I don't know what size your looking for, I have a piece of rough left over from my piece that will cut a 11x6 emerald cut

That's really sad to hear about the JXR mining today.

Yea, it is Chrono. Terry was great when he ran the mine. I could call John Cater the day of, and go dig all day long for only $20.
I won't get into the juicy details, because of how word gets around, but it's totally different than the good ole days.
$50 to dig is no good. Most days you get nowhere near $50 worth of stones dug up, especially if you don't dig as fast as I do. You need either luck, or hard work, to score at the mine these days.
Crasru...err..um...i mean Arkteia's custom bracelet

The day I dug up the crystal that cut this stone. My buddy Ben snapped the pic.

I will see if I can source some matching stones for you. I don't have it like I used to, but I will still try.

A couple JXR gems I had a long time ago.524356_3502069401739_1459793217_n.jpg 524275_3502067641695_1799745563_n.jpg

Hi, Amethystguy! Nice to hear from you! Great picture of the Ellis amethyst, so lovely, the name "geocrocus" comes to mind.

It is sad what has happened to JXR, but good that I asked. :)

The photos of the pieces that you showed, they look amazing. What is not seen in the picture of my stone is how well George Ellis has oriented the stone when cutting.

You know in what context I often remember you nowadays? The phrase that 90% of ebay amethyst is hydrothermal, or something like it, do you remember it? I have come across it recently, and not only on ebay.

I can't recall exactly what that 90% was in regards to, but it does ring a bell.
I do recall my write-up on ametrine though.
"experts say that 40%-50% of ametrine on the market is synthetic." That is the standard number usd by those in the biz.
I crunched all the data I could find on Russian synthetic ametrine, as well as, the data found on Anahi Mine, where nat. ametrine is found.
My calculations come to around 70-75% of the ametrine on the market is synthetic.
According to the amount produced each year, from both mines, the amount of syn. material greatly surpasses the amount of natural ametrine produced at Anahi.

I sort of recall the 90% thing...maybe it was the amount of synthetic amethyst on the market?
It might be close to that number, if you think about it. All the costume jewelry and mass produced chinese stuff, if taken into account, may make up the majority of amethyst stones out there.

my heart breaks for the poor souls who have a fake ametrine, thinking it's a real one, but never knowing otherwise.
This is why you shouldn't buy preformed ametrine, in my opinion. Don't you wonder why all these Pak, Brazilian, and Thai dealers, have massive mounds of perfect preformed stones, each one having an almost perfect color delineation.
I only buy from here...when I do buy ametrine.
http://www.ametrine.com/

It sounds like the new nine owners are greedy. That’s too bad. Barrett, in your photos, the amethyst looks neon! I wish we could find material like that now.

Have you seen the Rwanda material floating around the market, these days?
Joe Henley posted a few pics of some he got. The color is bluer than IRL, of course, but nonetheless, it's still fantastic looking material.

I have a significant stash of uncut JXR from Rodney, and all of it is top color, but I rarely cut it and only cut large stones when I do. The reason is that it's just not very economical to cut when you're competing with tons (literally) of dirt-cheap synthetic material out in the market. In my opinion, the JXR amethyst when well-saturated is some of the best in the world. I know the Ellis Mine material is good, but its very hard to come by any, whereas I am lucky to have my stash of JXR material.

I actually have a cut JXR in the Smithsonian collection now. It was incredibly deep rich purple trillion, and in daylight it shows flashes of red and blue on the purple body color. It is 11.50 carats and 15.2 mm across.

Hey Jeff: be careful, as your post could be misinterpreted as you trying to drum up business for your uncut rough and I wouldn't want you to be censored by the Mods...;)2

ETA: Oh, and very pretty stone, btw!

Maybe I was unlucky. I have two Rwandan amethysts and both are red. I once saw Joshua Rioux posting a stone that was cut in such a way that blue flashes interspersed with the red ones, that was beautiful. But in general, I had no luck with Rwandan material. So I have still not found "mine".

I love what you love- an amethyst with both blue and red flash.

Well, I don't cut anything on request or commission...so its not a solicitation in any way. :) I get asked about commissions often but I just don't do it. I prefer the freedom to cut what I want and think is best for every piece of rough, and when I want to do it. But thanks for the heads up.
