Hello Everyone,

I had originally gone with a friend to look at rings so she could tell the BF what I like. HOWEVER, it has opened my eyes to how difficult/detailed diamond shopping can be, OH MY GOODNESS, and now it has become an obsession in finding the perfect stone for me.

I am set on a yellow gold (yes must be yellow) halo setting, with very delicate micro pave diamonds on the side, very simple. All my research said that with yellow gold I should get a K colored diamond, EXCEPT this one website that said with yellow gold HALO I should stay within F-H. I found this beautiful K color, GIA, very clean SI2, 3.08, no Fluor, that looks amazing (my total budget is 30, but i am trying to stay under). Now every other size looks small
I asked one guy on line who has a reputable website and he said if I trust the jeweler, I should get the pave diamonds in a color closer to K and I should be ok, obviously my concern is the diamond looking yellow.
I wanted to get some of your thoughts. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Elle

I think that the website meant that if you expect the diamond to look white, then F-H is recommended. However, if you don't mind warmer colored stones, then a K or even lower color would be nice in a YG halo. A K won't look "yellow" per se... A diamond set in a yellow gold halo will look more yellow because it will reflect the color around it. I have a 2.43 J stone set in WG and it looks white face up in my halo, but it would show more tint if in another color, KWIM?

OP, also keep in mind that the larger the stone, the more body color will show. A K color in a 3 ct stone will exhibit much more tint than a 1 ct in the same color. :))

OP, if you want to get a lot of bang for your buck, I would look into old cut diamonds. They have chunkier faceting and tend to face up whiter than their modern counterparts in the same color. Here is a gorg L color, but I bet it's more like a J/K...

Here is another that is HUGE! It's an M, but the description says it faces up extremely bright.

haha i'll probably get robbed!

The stone looks white in some lighting and a bit champagney in other lights, but then again it is not in a yellow gold halo setting yet, as no one seems to have a sample of one. All the jewelers I have been to have said that stones will look even whiter once set,but it still scares me a bit, I wasn't sure if anyone has a yellow gold halo setting with a K stone.
In white gold I could tell for sure and I wouldn't even consider it (it did faceup white in different setting though, but still wouldn't do it in white gold).

If the stone looks like it is a champagne colour in some lighting situations nothing you do will get rid of that. In white gold you are seeing a contrast, with yellow gold it could make it contrast less some stones actually also look more tinted next to yellow gold depends on the underlying body colour of the stone. You need to go back and get them to sit it into a yellow gold setting and see if you like that in a range of lighting situations. White melee in the halo will also make the stone contrast more so make the colour difference more visible not less visible.

I would consider lower than J in an old cut stone, but I would not do it in a 3 ct modern round brilliant. Is the 3 ct stone you saw graded GIA Excellent cut? Three cts will be pretty huge with a halo.

It's a triple Excellent, Gia.

It's not an old diamond. I think it's just a normal stone.

I don't think that there are any rules about this sort of thing because it can be affected by so many variables (only one of which being a personal preference when it comes to color). Doing research is great, but no one can tell you that a certain color stone will look better set in any particular way. There are general guidelines (like complimenting a warmer colored stone with a yellow gold setting), but stones, settings, and personal tastes will vary. Personally, If I had a warmer-colored stone, and I wanted to minimize the warmth, I would not set it in yellow gold.

Anyone has picture of a yellow gold halo ring they own?

An MRB will show alot more color in the 3ct range then an old cut.

It seems you are really invested in this stone. I would take a break and see if you can find something better. I personally think a K would like find in YG if it were smaller. At 3cts I'm concerned the tint will bother you and that is a rather costly mistake if you don't love it.

If you do buy it is there a return window if you wear it around for a little bit and see if the color appeals to you? I have a 5ct O/P that I wore as a solitare for 2 months before I put it in a halo. it made the decision much easier.

The owner of the store will take back any stone for the exact price replacement. So the stone is 23K so if I wanted an H it would cost more than that anyway as I wouldn't go any lower than a 2.4c. He did show me some I diamonds and putting them next to the G stone I couldn't tell a difference. Urggggg I have taken a break from the store tough I think I was driving him crazy, and myself. That K stone is pretty though. I am going to go there next week with my sister and see what she thinks.
