Kite-shaped diamonds?

Is there a thread or other guide to fancy-shaped diamonds, that encompasses kites and similar shapes?

I saw the index on LM's site, but I'm confused about kites. His have a flat side - see image below. I've seen other so-called kites that have points, so they literally look like a kite. Is there another name for these?

I had always thought they were called shied, and "kite" was when you set a princess sideways, though I've heard that called compass set too :read:

Interesting - a princess sideways is a kite? I thought the kite was more elongated? Here is the LM picture of the shield.

This is what I think of traditionally as a kite;

And this as a shield;

The first pic you have linked looks like a kite with a flat side or cut off top part. I looked up a page of pics of kites and a few had princess type cut patterns (see underneath) but most had faceting that looked more like step cuts see above....

More like an elongated princess;

Obviously they vary, this was also listed for sale as a "kite" which is different again;

Those are all interesting diamonds! I really like the second one you posted, the elongated princess! Where did you see that one?

That pair you linked looks like what LM calls pseudo-shields - check it out.

I've seen both (I was just looking at them) shields that are shield shaped that are modern cuts on the inside and shields that are step cuts and kites that are modern cuts in a kite shape and kites that are step cuts. I think you can find them in both and genuine antique ones as well.... Hopefully Karl or one of the experts might appear I am sure they probably have diagrams of all of the different styles.

The one that looks more like an Elongated princess style is what I would label more of a modern style kite, the step cut ones look more Antique or Vintage to me although many of them are newly cut, some are genuine antiques.

The one that looks more like an Elongated princess style is what I would label a modern kite, it is for sale with a diamond broker.
May I ask for the broker's name or a link? I haven't posted in a while and don't want to break any rules that I may not be familiar with!

You will need to ask one of the vendors to find them or some like them for you, just show them that pic, they should be able to source them for you, I deleted that when I wrote it because I am not trade and despite being able to access trade links which I just did for pics, I don't sell anything, and it is against the rules to sell anything here as well.... Who are you getting your setting made with? Someone like Jon at GOG or Grace from Jewels by Grace (who I can give the link to if you like) could undoubtedly get this or one like it for you. That particular one is .74 carats but there are smaller pairs with the same cut for sale as well.

The last pic does look like a baseball shaped diamond...

I don't have kite shaped diamonds, but I do have kite shaped sapphires. I do not think the one with the cut off top is kite shaped, personally! Can't you have the ring maker source the kites? That is the normal way!

Good to see you Starry! :wavey:

I agree with you DS, your sapphires are what I would call a standard kite but I wanted to check so I looked at the list of what they classified as "kites" for sale and ones similar to Leon's and that one above came up as well :D

I do not consider a princess sideways as a kite. My kites are step cuts.

Hi DS! :wavey:

I'm thinking about re-setting some of my necklaces and want to make sure I ask for the right thing!

Those pink kites are gorgeous! I guess that's what I envisioned. These look step-cut, but I'm guessing they might come in brilliants?

Thanks for the input arkieb - great pictures! :))

My kites look most like the first step cut one Arkie posted but mine obviously has an elongated bottom.

Can't wait to see your project, Starry!

They seem to come in both see above pics, 3/4s of the ones I looked at were step cuts and 1/4 were more like modern princess type cuts in an elongated kite shape.

That's for your help arkieb and DS!

I wish there were a page I could go to with images of all varieties of kites, shields, traps, bullets, etc. I'm looking for something a little different. I'd rather peruse some choices and formulate a few designs, before engaging a vendor.

That way, I'm not too much of a PIA! :lol:

Have you seen any guides, other than LM's?

I have Nobel cuts in my ering, but I don't believe the designer of my ring is working with the public anymore (he holds the trademark on Nobel cuts). :-/

Hi athenaworth. :wavey:

What a beautiful ring! The Noble cut looks fantastic! I don't have to have a Noble cut exactly but I found the blurb interesting.

For me, a less elongated stone would probably be better. I don't plan to put a bezel around the kite, so the skinny tip on the Noble wouldn't have a lot of protection.

Wear your gorgeous ring in good health! :))

I don't think I have ever seen this close up view of the side of your ring! Love it!!! :love:

Starry, I love the antique stones! They are so pretty!
