During the past couple of weeks our 11 year old neutered male kitty named Sammy has started peeing under our living room coffee table. He had a bad bout of 'Fatty Liver Disease' in August where his survival depended on us force-feeding him special food via syringe every four hours. He was very co-operative about it and after four weeks began eating on his own. :appl: :appl:

In all other respects, he is 'back to normal' - playing, sitting on our knees etc. etc., but the urinating has started up only recently. He poops in his litter box, but we can't seem to persuade him to pee there too. One of the rare times we caught him, DH took him to his box, but he just jumped out, came back to the living room and squatted right before our eyes.

We realize it's a behavioural problem (as we had his urine tested), but have no idea what to do. Any ideas would be most appreciated as this has got to stop. :((

Have you discussed the behavior with your vet? Sorry that I don't have any suggestions for you, but good luck. My 14 year old cat died of kidney failure resulting from fatty liver disease, so I know how hard it is to get them eating again. You're obviously a very dedicated pet owner for your kitty to have made it through that!

is there something new on the table? have you cleaned it with a particular product? you could try cleaning it with something that has citrus in it....cats generally don't like citrus smells [or eucalpytus]. personally, i'd cover the table up with something washable and see if this blows over. you are indeed fortunate to have a cat survive fatty liver disease.....again, this may just be a passing phase.

I know nothing but I wonder if kitty equates painful urination with kitty litter and the litter box.

I was going to say something along these lines. Maybe a new, relocated litter box?

Swingirl and Nashville that makes a lot of sense :appl: :appl: Tomorrow it's off to the pet store we go  .

I'm wondering why you think that urinating was/is painful...The urinalysis showed no sign of infection and the vet's physical exam showed no painful areas.

Just to show how stupid/devoted we are, we bought a plug-in diffuser from the vet. It's supposed to calm him, so now he's calmly peeing.

We're in the midst of "Litterbox bootcamp". It is supposed to work but you have to do the whole program. If you google it you will find the directions. Don't try to speed up the process as it will backfire and you'll have to start again. Good luck!

Thanks, Scorpioanne. I will definitely look into that too. :wavey:
