Often it can identify what country and time period something is from. 935 can point to Germany. 830 is scandinavia. 915 - finland. 800 - also Germany. 980/940/970 - mexico. As far as I know sterling is still used in the U.S. if it is made in the US. Currently, most countries mark silver 925 though I still see 900/940 & 970.Date: 4/3/2005 8:33:13 PM

I know that todays standard is 925 and that older items often are marked STERLING or STG, I''ve even seen SILVER. But where do 835 800 900 and 935 fit in. Also when did the United States switch from marking things STERLING to using 925 and what are most countries using these days?
