Hi Everyone, I have lurked here for awhile and finally joined and just made my first purchase of some, I think beautiful, Kornerupines, Does anyone care to share their thoughts or pics of settings containing these? Need some ideas on how I should mount these.

What colouration does yours show? Do you mind sharing pictures of your new kornerupine? It is a softer stone and uncommon, hence most are not set.

Chrono, thanks for the reply, I should have grabbed the pics before I purchased as now they are off the site, it one is similar to this one, but on the lighter, brighter side, similar to this one below

the other stones i got are on the darker autume colored side like the one below

this is a description I found for Kornerupine
"With a hardness rating of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, kornerupine is hard enough for jewelry. But since kornerupine is so rare, it is mainly a collector's stone and is not commonly seen in jewelry. Gem-quality specimens are mainly found in small sizes, usually under 2 carats. Clean stones over 5 carats are very rare."

I was thinking of doing a 3 stone drop necklace and possibly a ring in a protected mount.

Here is the pic of the 1.49 ct stone

I am definately darwn to the metallic look in these stones.

It will be good to see your photos of the stones when you have them in hand.

Got my Kornerupines

Sorry for the totally terrible pictures and the lint

These stone isn't as dark as the picture shows here.
I think the larger stone has a window in it at certain angles

Maybe taking them outside will produce a better picture, but think I will wait till it warms up.

I don't know what kind of lighting you have inside, but if they look that nice all jumbled together and low light conditions, I can imagine they will look brilliant in indirect outdoor lighting. You bought quite a few, didn't you?!!

I bought 1 larger stone and then a parcel that contained 9 small stones. Yes, my picture taking sucks, I will try later to get some better pics.

I love your pic with the stones all jumbled together. I find that I get the best pictures outside, with diffuse lighting (on a cloudy or overcast day) like Minousbijoux suggested. On a bright, cloudless day, I find that I get too much glare and shadowing.

Also, if you have an iPhone, try taking pics with that as the color accuracy is pretty good.

Yes, and yes. Can't vouch for the iPhone as I have a droid.

Well, my phone does have picture taking ability, but it is very bad, thing I am due for an upgrade.
I was trying to take pics with my new camera I got for Christmas, and there are so many setting,
I haven't used anything but the auto mode yet.

So there are old threads around here that talk about cameras and picture taking with lots of tips.

Does your camera have a macro mode? On mine its designated by a flower symbol. That's the best setting for gemstones. I'll see if I can dig up some of those old threads.

Even when I use macro mode for the 2 point and shoot cameras I have, the color is not accurate for either. It's take me a few years to get decent shots of my stones, so don't feel badly.

BTW, Gene at Precision Gem once had an amazing green kornerupine. I think it was Gene at least.

Thanks, I will play around with my camera and see if I can get some better pics.

While I really do like the larger stone I got, I wish it was just a tad on the deeper color side, and maybe just a bit larger.
I would luv to see more of the Kornerupine stones. I will check out Gene's site. Thanks

I haven't seen too many of them set and don't know much about them other than their hardness of 6.5. Is it also that they're not set more often because they're fragile in some other way, or is it just that it has low dispersion?
