Well friends, buckle up for a saga. Let me preface this by saying that my current (for the past ~5 years) favorite jewelry makers are Van Craeynest and Kataoka. I admire (stalk) their designs often.

Let's rewind to ~10 days ago. It's morning. I'm drinking coffee and perusing TRR, as I do daily. I'm not buying much right now, but I like finding stuff and posting on the antique subforum for others to admire/buy. Scrolling....scrolling.....GASP.

I see this listing: https://www.therealreal.com/products/jewelry/rings/engagement-ring/18k-platinum-diamond-ring-nv21t

I instantly recognize the style, aesthetic, etc, as Kataoka. But no, it can't be. Why would a Kataoka ring be on TRR??? I decide that I don't care and buy immediately on the off chance it's real. TRR gives 2 weeks to return and I decide it's worth the chance.

I wait. I stalk the listing and the Kataoka website.

Ring arrives. I open the box and am quite confident it's authentic but want to be sure. I decide to email Kataoka and see if there's any serial number or makers mark to check for. I figure they'll ignore me since I'm a random who bought a ring 2nd hand. Surprisingly, a very nice employee from the NYC store writes back. He asks for pics under a loupe. I take them, send, and wonder.

He writes back. ITS FREAKING AUTHENTIC! It's this ring: https://www.kataoka-jewelry.com/en/categories/en-rings/diamond-rose-ring-supreme/

You must wonder at this point why i used the word "saga" instead of "joyful coincidence". Well. In my haste to buy this beautiful ring, I didn't look at sizing. It's a 4.5 and I am a 7. This is a problem.

I write back to Kataoka humbly asking if they can resize to my (relatively) enormous finger. I am waiting to see if it's possible. They aren't sure, they're asking the atelier in Japan. I am waiting anxiously.

Please send PS dust. I love love love Kataoka so much and will be sad if I have to return or rehome this amazing ring.

Pics (not good ones because of closet lighting and my fingers being so much bigger than the delicate ring itself).

Wow, that's amazing.
Isn't it marked inside? Why would someone list it without doing research first?? Crazy!
What a deal you found!:kiss2:

I have everything crossed that they can work some magic on the sizing. It’s a beautiful ring!

1000% vote for pinky ring if the resize doesn't happen! You hit TRR lottery!

She's FABULOUS! Wishing you good luck with resizing and sending positive vibes!!!
Great find!!!

Congrats!!! Such a pretty ring, sending lots of fairy dust your way for a happy ending!

And you could totally rock a pinky ring!

Couldn’t happen to a nicer, more helpful person! So, so happy for you! The karma bus rolls every day! Everything crossed that they can size this ring for you!

It's marked, but not with Kataoka or anything. They have a specific way of how they list the ct weight and gold content (apparently), and some models have serial numbers inside, but not all. It's mind boggling to me that whoever sold it with TRR didn't tell them what it was!

Lovely!! What a great find!! I will be sending all the good vibes that it can be sized! If you’re planning on keeping it forever, can you have one of our respected jewelers size it for you?

ETA I quite enjoyed your alliteration!!

That's an amazing find. I also think it's not unreasonable to resize to fit your pinky!

Thank you all! Yeah, if they can't fully resize, a pinky ring could work. No idea what size that finger is. Maybe 5-5.5?

What a fabulous find! Hopefully they can resize it : )

My ring size is an 8.25 and pinky is 6.5 on my L and 7 on my R. So it would definitely work on your pinky! Plus it'll give you more fingers to wear all your rings hehe.

Beautiful ring and wow, what a story behind it. I need to check out TRR more often.

Did you... Just snag THAT... For under 700 bucks... OH MY GOD... o_O :kiss2: o_O :kiss2: o_O :kiss2: :appl::appl::appl::appl::appl:

Haha indeed! And might have to sell it or return because of my enormous finger. So both :kiss2::kiss2::kiss2::kiss2::kiss2::cry2::cry2::cry2::cry2:

Pinky ring! Pinky ring!

My ring finger is a 6.5+ and my pinky is a 4.25. I can't imagine you would need to go above a 5.5 for your pinky so that resize should be easy.

Hoping for the best outcome here, @lovedogs!! That ring is so lovely, and what a fantastic story!! And how wonderful to hear the Kataoka folks are helpful and kind.

What???!!!!! Amazing find! I really hope they can size it up enough.

Wellllll sad news. Kataoka can't resize it. I'm going to ask DK, and if he can't it'll go on LT (hopefully one of you small fingered PSers can wear it).

Oh and as for a pinky ring: I sadly hate them on me. Not sure why, but I do. I just wouldn't end up wearing it.

I hope DK will take the job!

Oh @lovedogs no. Don't stop at DK if you get a "no". There IS a bench out there who can do a good resize job. You might have to search more and pay more but omg, so so so worth it!! Or just keep it for your girl as @maryjane04 suggested!
