have you ever tried pierced earring converters? If so, do they work? Do they hurt? Are some kinds better than others? I just purchased the ones in the link below, but have seen some where you literally bend the post of an earring. The latter didn't seem like the best option to me, but what do I know?

Would greatly appreciate your thoughts and experiences! If these don't work, I'm either going to have a special pair of sapphire and diamond earrings I just purchased converted to clip-ons, or pierce my almost 30 y/o ears!! Oh the suspense...

Thank you!

I say pierce those puppies and get yourself a pair of fabulous earrings! ;)

Ditto!

And while you're at it, please tell my niece to get her ears pierced (already :wink2: ) so I can give her the .25ctw whiteflash studs that I have waiting for her!

That is a nice present. How old is your niece?

Yeah, yeah, you two.

The first thing you need to know is that those things are base metal, so watch for allergies. You also probably don't want to use them with your 2 ct D IF studs inherited from your beloved aunt Royalty.

Clip and screw earrings are pretty uncomfortable in general. Some are better than others. At least one reviewer claims this set is especially comfortable, so maybe these will work.

Converters like this don't work with all types of earrings, and the converter often shows. Some earrings are just too heavy to convert. I don't know what your earrings look like, but if they are really nice, I might talk to a jeweler about a more permanent (and high quality) conversion.

I guess the short answer is that you have to experiment to know if it's going to work.

I love sapphires. Let's see these earrings that are potentially pierce-worthy!

ETA: Ooops. Forgot to mention that I have no input for your question because my ears are pierced and I don't have any experience with earring converters. Got so distracted by the possibility of seeing sapphires.

My mum has not had her ears pierced, and she wore a pair of diamond ear clip on her wedding day, which she gave to me as a gift.

I have worn them, however, not very often, as they hurt my earlobes.

DK :))

Just curious why you don't just pierce your ears?

Thanks for your thoughts everyone! It seems the general consensus is to have my ears pierced. I guess I'm hesitant because I've managed this long without having them pierced, and I have liked my ears just the way they are for almost 30 years 8) Also, my earlobes are very, very small/lean/narrow and attached, nothing hangs loose. So there's absolutely no room for error in having them pierced, and I wonder if my ears are really suited for piercing because of this. I worry they may rip/tear easily :knockout:

I will certainly post my new lovely sapphire earrings! I think that's ok since they are a personal DB purchase I made. They are absolutely pierce-worthy and downright regal IMHO! They will be my wedding earrings!

ChristineRose, I was hesitant about the converters being base metal too. For one, it just seems wrong to pair my 18kt gold diamond and sapphire earrings with bronze (or what have you?), and two, who knows how reliable they will be. But I just thought I'd give them a try.
Will let you all know how it goes when they arrive. I think I will stick to wearing them in the house for awhile as a safety precaution.

If you do decide to have your ears pierced, please consult with a professional piercer. ;)) They will be able to give you a high quality piercing with high quality jewelry, and the best placement for your particular ear structure. Definitely phone or go and see the shop(s) for an in person appt. to discuss your options. You should be able to find a quality piercer through the APP (Association of Professional Piercers):

Thank you so much, lyra! I definitely will. I was already thinking along those lines of finding a true professional, but I had no idea where to look or that there was such a resource out there. This is very reassuring for me as someone who has never had anything pierced or tattooed, etc. Thanks again!

So are you going to do it? :appl: :appl: :appl:

Still not sure yet. Want to give the converters a try at least. Will update and post pics when they arrive. Should be here by next week!

I was 40 years old when I finally got my ears pierced. My folks were pretty old fashioned and would not let me get them pierced in my teens (1970s) when EVERYONE was getting pierced. I hated wearing clip=ons as my ears killed me by the end of the day or evening. Plus the selection was really getting limited. But I loved the freedom of not having to wear earrings as I don't like the look of the holes sans earring. I got them done at Claires with my best friends and a few magaritias. One ear is kinda screwed up but it is fine. I now have some beautiful studs and drops which i never would have purchased in clips. Go for it you will not regret it.

Update: The converters were a complete waste of $$, and I put them back in the mail within a day if receiving them. Unfortunately, I didn't spend the time to get a few shots showing how poorly they worked. But basically, when I put the posts in the converters, they were loose and the earrings fell to the side, so they sat crooked. They may work better for dangle/drop earrings. Also, I was hoping the earrings might cover (or mostly cover) the flat, front part of the clip, but it was very visible on my ear, especially when the earrings fell to the side. Additionally, the looseness made me think the earrings could just fall out of the converters at any time.I suppose it's possible you could put an earring back on the very end of the post where it comes through the converter as a back-up safety option, but I'm not really sure.

Bottom line: These converters are not an aesthetically pleasing option IMHO, and I doubt whether they are very secure.

I still haven't decided about whether to have the earrings professional converted to clip-ons or have my ears pieced, but I still have some time. Wedding is not until November. 8)

Minority dissenting opinion here - just wanted to share an alternative pov, doesn't mean I don't respect and admire your earrings.

I'm around your age and had my ears pierced as a child. My decision was not what you'd call 'informed' since I was 5 years old and couldn't understand that it's permanent. I too have small, thin, narrow attached earlobes and find they're not well suited to earring. Stud backs press up close to my head behind my ear uncomfortably and dangling earrings don't hang so well.

I've not worn earrings since high school and wish I had never had my ears pierced. Try googling images for 'earlobe repair'.

Good luck with your choice!

I can wear the ones that have screw backs, but not any of the clip-ons. My ear lobes are too tender, I guess. I had my ears pierced since college. But I have a few pairs of gorgeous earrings for non-pierced ears that I inherited from my grandmother. Otherwise, I would never bother with anything except pierced earrings.

quaddio, thanks for your response! In fact, I feel you've confirmed what I have been concerned about all along! Is it possible there are just some earlobes out there that are not suited for piercing? I have a strong instinct that I may be an example of this. I also would not want posts digging into my skin in which case the piercing would go unused. I am glad to know I can also get a professional opinion on this through the resource lyra posted.

TC1987, I have often been curious about non-pierced screw back earrings, and would absolutely consider that as an option if I have these converted to non-pierced earrings. I may have to give a pair a test drive to see how they feel. I am also not a big fan of the type of clip-ons that snap your earlobe like a bear trap :knockout: I have also heard that omega clip-backs can be fairly comfortable.

My mum cannot pierce her ears (it kept closing up even when she wears earrings everyday), so she would wear these modified screwbacks. They are very comfortable but if you are particular, you can see the loop of metal going under your lobe, at close range. You don't see it at normal range though and if you are wearing drops, I think they would be even less noticeable.

Might I suggest visiting a tattoo shop that also pierces to see what they say?

I'd trust their opinions - goodness knows they've experience with far more delicate piercing operations than earlobes of any sort would necessitate
