Ladies, may I ask your opinion on this gemstone necklace?

Ladies: I would like to request your opinion (good & bad) on these large gemstone and voluminous gemstoned chained necklaces:

I find these necklaces very beautiful and I'm considering getting my fiance one of these necklaces for a surprise gift. She is young, tall, and thin. She does like larger stones, her engagement ring is pretty large and she occasionally sports a yellow citrine pendant necklace in the 30 carat range that her mother gave her a few years back. However, this center gemstone is much larger than that and the necklace chain is very voluminous, probably too much so for daily wear. I am assuming something like this would like nice for Sunday after Church Brunches, Operas, and other more formal events which we sometimes attend.

So my question is: Is this necklace maybe too large and too loud? Is a necklace like this more suited to a woman with more years? Right now I'm teetering between her absolutely loving it and liking it but it being too large for wearing.

I think that's hard to answer since tastes can vary so much from person to person. For me personally, it's probably too much, but for others, it might be perfect. It's really hard to say without knowing the person and their sense of style.

That being said, I"m not a huge fan of how that particular pear is cut. For 2k I would much rather do the custom route with a precision faceted stone.

I agree with MTG. This is a very taste-specific piece, so honestly, you are probably in a better position to judge how much your fiancee would enjoy it.

$2,250!!!

Nothing you'll want to hear but,
the window in that main stone is huge
there is no mention of the stones being natural or synthetic or treated if natureal
and it is a lot of money for what it is.

Thanks for your input everybody! I have spoken to the designer via email, she is both very responsive and she has assured me that both the main gemstone and the gemstones in the necklace chain are real, although I am assuming they are heat treated.

Does anybody else sell necklaces with chains that are this thick or gemstone packed? I am more worried about the chain then the center stone really.

Is this a more reasonable price:

Looks like a big window in that stone too. As a blue topaz, it's been irradiated, but does she offer any lab certification for her stones?

As for style, I think both of those necklaces could look stunning on the right woman, but they're busy enough that it would need to be somebody who can wear them well. You mentioned that your fiancee wears a large citrine pendant -- does she have things with ornamentation on the chain too? If not, you might ask a friend of hers for an opinion; it's very individual.

I'm not inpressed with either of those necklaces. For that price I would have one custom made. Dana at Mastercutgems.com has some large gemstones that you could easily have made into a gorgeous necklace at BGD, JKT or somewhere similar. I would contact Dana- on his site I know he has a large citrine, amythest and topaz off the top of my head.

I think it sounds like a suitable style based on your description of her tastes and activities but you should get a good value for your money and that doesn't seem like a reasonable price. I'd go custom or look into more artisans. Very sweet thought though!

Re: Ladies, may I ask your opinion on this gemstone necklace

The designs you’ve shown are too much for me but only you will know your fiancé’s personal likes/dislikes. I’m not a fan of blue topaz in general because I am fussy about treatment (topaz are irradiated for the most part although the treatment is stable and the stone is safe to wear). In this case, you are paying for the labour rather than the stones because blue topaz cost mere cents to a few dollars at most.

I too think that jewelry taste is very personal, but if she already wears larger pieces, than it may work for her. I agree with others about the window in the center amethyst, not very appealing. I love large necklaces, so to me this could easily be dressed up or dressed down for daily wear. For that kind of money I still think you could do better :)

I echo everyone else's opinion. You can get better for the money and more unique for the money. I love the chunky necklace look but this is a little pricey for what it is.

www.MineralMiners.com also carries some pretty unique “rough” type crystals that are similar, except without the gem “drop” at the end.

Re: Ladies, may I ask your opinion on this gemstone necklace

I wear chunky jewellery with real gemstones either set in gold (or more often than not, Sterling Silver). Please shop around because you shouldn't be paying anywhere near $2000. More like $200 for something like that with natural gemstones. I appreciate that the necklace you've linked to is by a designer but it's seriously overpriced.

In terms of what your FI will like? If she like chunky looks then go for something that appeals. If she likes Citrine, she'll probably also like the purples of Amethyst and it will be a nice colour change.

Go for it but don't spend much - even if the gems are natural!

Edit: are you in the US? Do you still have US equivalent of The Jewellery Channel or it's liquidation channel? In the UK, they're selling a huge amount of chunky real gemstone necklaces set in silver very reasonably (great for presents!).

Re: Ladies, may I ask your opinion on this gemstone necklace

Personally I would do either a briolette cluster necklace, or a beautiful gemstone pendant on a gold chain, but not both unless you really really knew that was your SO's esthetic. My husband loves me, sees what jewelry I wear but has still given me gifts of jewelry that I can only go  . So it's easy to get it wrong.

I think it's very sweet and romantic you want to pick out a jewelry piece for her though.

Personally what I would love is if my husband took me to my favorite jewelry store and let me window shop and see what I liked and then went back and got that piece!
