LD,

Im specifically asking you because I know that you have both strongly colored Apatites and Paraiba Tourmaline in your collection...

Im late to the Apatite party. I've always seen them, but never really bought a nice example because of the fragility, the mediocre optics, etc etc. I figured the color was similar to blue Zircons that I've seen. But I bought one recently and OMG, the saturation....it is like it is plugged in.

Ive always heard this about Cuprian/Paraibas, and I've admittedly had a few Cuprians, but nothing approaching a Paraiba. Sure they 'glowed' a little in low light, but they were nothing anywhere near the intensity of the Apatite that I bought.

My question is...how would you compare the "best" neon Apatite to the "best", or at least a "good" quality Paraiba Tourmaline? From a color, glow, brilliance perspective? Im blown away by this Apatite, which I was lucky to find with the color it has and the clarity it has. I know these are usually included, at least in larger sizes. Does the Apatite glow the way Paraiba does, or is it just the color which is similar (or, is it not similar?). Honestly I cannot imagine a stone more vivid than this Apatite, aside from my Luc Yen Spinel which is a darker blue.

Interested in what you have to say since you have both. I attached a pic of my Apatite but it is actually more vivid in person. I couldn't get a representative picture. The stone is 2ct, and was under $100. I am just really, really surprised that a stone with this intensity of color can be so inexpensive on the market.

Apatite is lovely in its own right but you really can't compare to top quality Paraibas.

Until you've seen a top quality Paraiba (and I don't think I've seen one for sale for ages - top quality that is), then you can't comprehend the glow or neon-ness. It's not just about low lighting. A good Paraiba literally screams at you from across a room and quite frankly looks man-made because of it.

Apatites never quite reach that. They can be pretty and vivid but the neon quality won't be there.

Your Apatite is very pretty and this is exactly what you should expect to see from an Apatite. Unfortunately there are lots of insipid ones or ones that have a vitreous or silky quality.

Here's a nice Apatite (on the left) and a mediocre Paraiba on the right. They're both pretty but now imagine the Paraiba amped up and you can see how they will be very different.

Hope that answers your question.

That was what I was looking for...thanks!

Great comparison, thanks for elaborating on that LD, I've been wondering about that too! Chris looks like a very nice apatite..what are your plans with it?

Hi all:

I thought you might find this interesting. I found this Brazilian Paraiba tourmaline being sold by Wilds Global Minerals. What I find interesting is that if someone actually thought this was representative of what the highest quality Paraibas look like, they would be wrong. In fact, I have several lovely Cuprians that are much better than this one!

ETA: I think your apatite is nicer than this Paraiba, lol!
