All,
I have spent the last several months researching diamonds and settings. With the help of the forum, I doubled my budget and spent way more money than I could afford
The only direction I got from my girlfriend is that she wanted the diamond to be over 2ct. So, as a good boyfriend should do, I listened. I ended up with a 2.03ct J SI1 RB. When I looked at stones at my local jewelry store the lowest color I wanted to go with was an H. I don't know if it was the lighting in there or what but the J colored stones in there did not look good at all. I started working with a online jeweler who found the diamond that I ended up with and assured me it was very white and completely eye-clean. Sure enough, when I receieved the stone in the mail, I was shocked to see how white it was. I looked at that thing under ever single lighting condition I could find and could not see one inclusion from the top down. When I look through the diamond from the side in certain lighting conditions I can see inclusions toward the bottom of the stone. But since I couldn't see anything from the top down, I was okay with it and is a great SI1 stone.
For the setting, my girlfriends family has always gone to a certain local jeweler for the last 35 years. And so, naturally, I thought I would just go there and have them make the setting. Then I found this forum and learned about Leon, Victor, Steven, etc...I did give the local jeweler a chance though. After receieving the CAD pictures, I just couldn't do it. It was not even close to what I knew was out there. I have been with my girlfriend for almost six years now and she has mentioned that she wants a ring that she never has to upgrade...she is very sentimental and would never want to trade in her ring. So, yes, I have spent way more money than I ever thought I would, but I am buying her forever ring and I want her to be excited every day to wear it.
After doing all my research I had decided on either Leon or Victor. If I was going with Victor it was going to be the Emilya halo. And if Leon, there were a couple I was considering. From the forum I had a rough idea of price and just had to decide on who to work with. One day, Leon emailed me asking how my planning was coming along and to give him a call if I had any questions. So, I did! He was so easy to talk to and was totally on board with all my ideas. He genually seemed excited to work with me and won me over as his customer that day. We took one of his creations and tweaked just a a few things about it and I shipped the stone off to him. He receieved the stone last week, so I probably have another 4-5 weeks to wait but I am very excited to see the ring once it is done.
So, I just wanted to say thank you to the PriceScope forum. You all have taught me more about diamonds than I ever thought I wanted to. Even though finding this forum absolutely broke my bank, I know my girlfriend will be over the moon, and that is all that matters.
I will keep this post updated and will post pictures as soon as I can!
