I cant believe I am 3 weeks away from a marriage proposal!!!
I think I owe you ladies a story.
I am American, and I am an opera singer by profession. I went to conservatory in NYC and lived there for a total of 10 years. My job meant I lived out of a suitcase most of the year - 3 weeks here and 6 weeks there, all the while subletting my apt in nyc to perfect strangers. As you can imagine, it left very little time for a personal life, especially after college...always on the go.
in my 28th year, I decided it was time for a change and I accepted an audition invitation for a full time position in a great theater in Switzerland as a leading soprano (translation: clothes in closet, not spread between 3 suitcases) Full time positions like this are only customary in german speaking countries.... don''t know why!! The audition went wonderfully, and I was offered the position. I finished out 4 months of work in the USA and after a sad goodbye to my best friends and family, It was time to get going.
in my 29th year, I sold most all of my belongings, I packed up what was left of my NYC apartment, and in 5 boxes and 3 suitcases, I moved to Switzerland. I knew no one in the country and I didnt speak but 5 words of german... but it was time for a change, and the universe gave me the opportunity....so I took it
After 6 weeks of rehearsal, I went on summer break, and the season officially began in Sept. On my First day of rehearsal after the break, I met P. P is a Set Designer. He is German and I didnt speak the language at the time, and he hadnt spoken English in 10 years (since college.) That most certainly did NOT stop us from flirting and eventually going on a date. We were both 29, we had both just moved to a new country, started new and exciting jobs, and we both found exactly what we were looking for.... and we knew it almost immediately...needless to say, my house had FIVE dictionaries strategically placed in case of dating vocabulary emergencies!!
Fast forward....P and I are 31 and have lived together for 1.5 years. We speak each others languages, have spent time in each other''s native countries, and we have made a beautiful home, community of friends, and life for ourselves here in Switzerland. We both joked that we had to travel the world to find each other.... and it is true. We did. I knew immediately that THIS was the man I was going to marry. My parents knew it too the moment they met him. P is nothing short of remarkable.
On the 21st of March, P is taking me on a surprise trip for the weekend. He has had the ring in his possession for 6 weeks, and the trip has been planned since he got the ring. The big question... where are we going, and what does that sweet lil'' devil have planned?! I am so excited to see what he has planned.
It is such an amazing time in our lives. This has been a long journey...finding P in this world, and I am trying to savour every last second of being his girlfriend. In 3 weeks, I will be his fiancee. The thought of it makes my heart beat faster.
Thanks for letting me share ladies. I am so, so happy!
