We are considering the purchase of an 8-9 ct ruby. I am trying to ascertain a per carat price range. One of the rubies is AGL certified from"Classic Mogok" (Burma) Myanmar and no heat treated. There is no further information on the certificate as for as cut, color, etc. The cut looks lovely as does the color. I know this is not a lot of information but if someone would be kind enough to give me their opinion on the price I would appreciate it.
Thank you.

Pricing is very strongly dependent on colour, treatment and size. Unfortunately, there is no way to estimate pricing with insufficient information on colour and treatment. I understand that it has not been heated but has it been fracture filled? What about the purity of redness and intensity of colour? How clean is the stone?

An 8 to 9 carat unheated Burma ruby of fine quality has pricing that only a millionaire could afford, if you could even find one that size. I'm concerned that the quality might be lacking even if it's a Burma ruby. Fine quality untreated stones larger than 3 carats command tens of thousands of dollars upward to six and seven figures.

Thank you. I tried on one in NYC at VCA for over a million which is way way out of my price range.
I have decided not to bid on this one, it is at auction also from VCA but it will probably go for more then I can spend right now.

Thanks for the help

Well if it''s a VCA piece, then at least you know it''s a fine ruby, especially if it has papers from a reputable gem lab. I had no idea where it was from. Most of the time, large rubies like that are not even gem quality, or heavily treated with fillers.

Those with a mediocre appearance (that look like pretty good pyrope garnets) are about a thousand per carat in those sizes, even if heated. And nice rubies, that actually look like rubies, in 2-3 ct. range are at least 1500 per ct, again heated. But since you''re buying from VCA we''re probably talking a very nice quality and much higher prices.

P. S. An 8-9 ct. ruby can cost as much as THIS.

Hmm, for a fine 8-9ct untreated ruby, top colour.. putting a finger in the air and guessing -- USD 3 to 4 million?

$50 / $100 k per carat. or certainly more depending. lets say bottom line 25 k per

Also why an AGL cert on an unheated 8 carat burma ruby? sounds strange to me. that should be GIA or Guebelin certed. no?

I agree with simply splendid. bit knowing nothig beyond what ingo you gave to me the give away is the AGL cert. they''re reputable but come on! nobody would cert a fine 8 ct unheated ruby at AGL unless their drunk. where''s the cache? it''s silly. imo.
