i am feeling like Traveling Gal & the Guest Book thread that had me laughing!
(i think it was Traveling Gal if i remember correctly)

sweetie & i are going for a food tasting at a restaurant on sunday, and in keeping with our reception venue are going for a "comfort food" theme (it''s at a country museum), so when i asked him to email me his tasting choices off of the catering menu, he sent of course mashed potato bar, homemade mac&cheese, sliced sirloin, etc... and a bunch of other pasta selections for us to try

but at the bottom he had their "Mandarin Orange Jello Surprise" -
i had to start laughing!! although I love jello and would have no qualms about serving it, it just struck me as the name of something you get on a senior citizen bus tour lunch, not a wedding, even though ours is pretty low key.....

when i asked him why he seriously said "i want to know what the surprise is"......

maybe i''ve had a long day but i could not stop laughing picturing everyone poking at the jello on the buffet line wondering what the heck was in it......

we may have to add it to the menu just for fun now :-)

again, this is one of those times when i ask for his input so i have got to pass it along, i don''t want him to feel bad

I''m cracking up now!!!

He wants to know what the surprise is so you have to serve it???

that''s too good!

I bet it would be great for the kids if any will be there. If you''re doing a low-key wedding, it might just be fun, but it will definitely get people talking!

I fail to see what the problem is. I wanna know what the surprise is too. Ok, ok, I get (now) that I can ask instead of serving it. But what's wrong with the jello along with the rest of the stuff if it's comfort food. What am I missing?

All I can say is this isn''t helping fight my craving for mac and cheese. And I, too, want to know the surprise. Sour cream? little marshmallows? Fruit?

I am now also curious as to what the surprise is!

We shall find out on Sunday evening when we go for the tasting,

and will report back (i am thinking it''s just fruit?)

Too funny!

Codex, I don''t know that I''d consider jello comfort food, though. When I think comfort food I think more of cakes, pies, ice cream and cookies as far as dessert goes. Jello would be my dessert of choice if I was on a diet

..which I sort of am, yet I still go for the other stuff

It''s sugary, I had it as a kid, comes in cool colors, and jiggles when I play with it (like Santa''s belly). It''s fun! So, it''s a comfort food to me.

MMMmmm jello! I like the red jello, though. . . .
Surprise? Oh yea, now I want to know too. Probably best to find out before the wedding though, he-he-he!!

I definitly laughed out loud all by myself here in the apartment...that is great! The jello in the local cafeteria always scared me a bit as a child... a mountain of multi-colored jiggle.

Let us know about the surprise!

I sympathize. FF has insisted that regardless of what kind of reception we have (brunch, tea, dessert only) there MUST be Buffalo wings.

I''m diggin'' the reveal of the surprise, though.

Gala...wings with REAL buffalo?

Maybe I should tell him: "Babe, you find a real Buffalo with wings, I'll happily cook and serve them myself."

Jello is what your mom makes you when you don''t feel well. My mom did at least.

I agree, unless they come off of an actual buffalo... ixnay the buffalo wings! Or at the very least make them boneless and on sticks. Or maybe make the men eat them in a separate section with it''s own sinks and bath towel size napkins? Finger food at a party is all well and good, but greasy finger food often associated with bbq sauce does not mix with white satin and/or silk!!

I wonder if almonds are involved? The best gelatinous desert I know is one made with almond extract and has mandrin orange slices on top. yumm. *drool*

the funniest part is that this thread made me want to go and make a big thing of jello. it''s totally childhood comfort food!!

The good news- we booked our caterer!!!! the tasting at the restaurant was so much fun, and YUMMY food.
we''re going with a fall/comfort food idea, only thing we''re set on for sure is the slow roasted, hand carved turkey with all the trimmings (homemade stuffing, reeeal mashed potatos, etc.) it was so juicy and tender
one of their bakers is lady who has been there over 20 years, gets there at 2am to start baking the breads and- oh my- baking powder biscuits, scones...i could go on...

The bad news- because of all the other yummy choices we''re not having the JELLO surprise- but I am happy to report that it was delicious anyway- the surprise is that they use orange sherbet instead of the water (for orange jello), and add some walnuts, etc. it was really good! luckily sweetie also agreed that it wasn''t high on the priority list....

Eeeenteresting. I still wanna try it. Sounds delicious.
