Tell me if this is a good idea. I'm new to this whole thing!
My girlfriend found the ring she likes at Jared, but their warranty plan stinks and I'm hoping to maybe just buy the diamond part online so I can get her a bigger diamond (princess cut)... Tell me what you think, I find the whole diamond search really confusing :)

What sites would be best? What's the best way to search?

Hi TimTebowMan-

You would have to check with Jared if they will set an outside stone or not. (I am not sure). As far as warranties go, I thought they had an OK policy? You may want to look into purchasing outside insurance-a lot of PSers use JewelersMutual because it is fairly inexpensive and they cover loss/theft/damage and will let you work with a jeweler of your choice to replace the ring. Another option is to add a rider on to your home insurance policy but you would need to find out the details.

What type of setting did your GF like?

As far as princess cuts, here are a few good places to start (in no particular order). What is your budget/preferred specs?
JamesAllen (non branded stones, can request up to 3 ASET images to help evaluate cut quality)
Good Old Gold (signature and Solasfera)
Whiteflash (ACA and ES)
Brian Gavin (signature)
High Performance Diamonds

Jared will set an outside stone in one of their settings but they will not remove a stone from a pre-set ring. You would have to order the setting separately. In that case you may be able to find the same or similar setting for a better price from an online vendor. Post a picture of the setting. You are better off with private insurance for the ring anyways and you will get a bigger, nicer diamond separate from the setting this way too!

She is looking at this setting:
http://design.jared-diamonds.com/item/R999560618908 I'm scared she might not like one I find online but any suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm looking at spending around $3,000 but that can go both ways if I can find something really nice I'd be willing to pay more :)

So you're saying if I bought the diamond I could take it into Jared and they would set the diamond for me? They charge like $100 for this service anyways, that would be cool if they'd do this samething with an outside diamond.

The will definitely set an outside diamond. Lovely setting! Now let the lovely PS experts help you find the perfect diamond! :appl: :appl:

Can anyone help me find a diamond?
pleeeeasee

Princess cuts are a little tricky to buy because GIA does not grade cut quality, so you have to buy from a trusted vendor to ensure you get the best cut (which = sparkle and brightness and all that lovely stuff, the most important things!!). You can also choose to limit yourself to stones graded by AGS because they DO grade cut.

Here are some nice options that will be better than anything you have likely seen in person, or will see in person on anyone you know ;))

Cut on all of these is the tops and the vendors all have great reputations on PS:

Just to clarify are you looking to spend 3,000 for the stone or the entire ring?

You really think AGS is needed having excellent cut really adds a lot to the price... hmm $3,000 w/ ring, but I'm willing to go up to a little more $3,500ish.

GIA not good enough?

so there is nothing wrong with GIA princess stones except that GIA does not evaluate the cut quality which is one of the most important factors in how the diamond looks. If you want a GIA princess (because you are correct, AGS0 princesses are $$) try a vendor who supplies ASET images, like James Allen.

Ditto- AGS grades princess cuts, so if you want to skip the premium, find a vendor who will get you an ASET that way you can evaluate the cut and post it so that princess experts and advise you and the cut-leakage..etc.

another question.. If I were to get insurance on this diamond? Let's say its $3,000 dollars how much do you think that would cost? I've heard it's about 1% per year seems like a lot... Would I be better off to buy from a store if they offer good warranty?

Thanks for all your guys help! means so much to me.

I think the insurance covers more than the warranty (you would have to check details of the policies). Jewelers Mutual insurance covers loss/theft/damage and I am not sure if loss and theft are covered by most warranties. You can get a free quote on their website

Store warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on IMO if you read the fine print etc. And you will pay so much more for poorer quality at most stores that offer warranties it completely offsets the cost.

1% of $3000 is $30 per year. That seems like a lot to you? Seems inexpesive to me for insurance that covers loss and damage on something worn every day. You don't have to insure your ring at all, you know.
