Tall, wide and shallow may be a really bad personal ad, but it''s what I need in a bookcase!!!

Specifically about 36" wide, about 12" deep, and about 80"-110" tall. Kind of like what they sell at Ikea, but you know, good. Dark wood would be best. And under $400 ideally.

we''ve got a wall in our kitchen that is just blank, screaming out for something... so we figured it would be a good place to store things... like cereal boxes and jars of pasta sauce... and some wine and some dishes. So after looking at almost every style of furniture designed for the kitchen, all we really want is a bookcase. It has to be shallow so we can scoot by it because if it sticks out more than a foot, it will impede traffic flow.

Anyone have any ideas? brands? stores? websites?

Thanks!

A friend of mine got something like what you''re describing at Pier 1. The hardest part for her was the shallowness too because it''s right at the entrance to her kitchen and across from the fridge, and she ended up with something very nice and inexpensive. I''ll see if I can find a pic of it or something similar.

Tall Wide and Shallow...you just may be what I looking for. If you like walks on the beach, 18th century poetry, chocolate and silly putty I think we should meet. I am Short, thin, and deep and we can balance each other out. So call me!!

And on that shelf thing...have you considered http://www.homedecorators.com/Furniture/

Also what about those cables that you suspend shelfing on? Or you may even try an invisable type mounting bracket and place shelving directing on the wall. This way you can stop the shelf way before it gets in the way of feet traffic. Another option is to attach preshaped boxes/cubes on the wall. Some boxes have hinged doors...some are open aired. You can place then in order or in a random pattern. I suggest this as I wasn''t not able to find your height requirement. Once you find a cabinet you could attach it to the wall, suspended from the foor.

Just a couple of thoughts...DKS

DKS-- you are hilarious!! well done!

I checked Pier One and they don''t have anything like that right now... there stuff is so cyclical that I''ll keep my eyes open. I found one on home decoraters that may work, but I don''t think M will be crazy about the style.

I''m trying to avoid hanging stuff on the wall because there are some pipes and duct work right behind it and I''m anxious... I hung shelves on the wall that is perpendicular to it and I missed the duct work by centimeters! Of course I could always cut a hole and look.

I have ordered furniture from the website DKS posted and am still very happy with the quality and price. I would order again from them in a heartbeat. World Market has furniture (mostly dark wood). Maybe ikea has something that would work.

Sumbride, have you checked Target? They have some pieces online that would be well below your budget. We got a nice bookcase from there for $100 a few years ago when we lived in an apt., when we moved into our house we ended up giving it away because it didn''t look "right" anywhere, but for $100 it served its purpose and wasn''t a huge loss, ya know?

Thanks! There''s one on Room and Board that is perfect except for the $700 price tag... but I think that''s the "solid wood" aspect vs. veneers that everyone else uses. I''ve looked at Target and West Elm and didn''t find anything that fit quite right... Target''s furniture is very short... I''m quite sure why! I guess it''s marketed to apartments and dorm rooms but it''s just odd that nothing is remotely tall enough there. World Market has one that M really likes but it''s a little too deep and would get in the way.

I got a bookcase similar to what you are describing years ago at the Container Store. It may be a little too "Ikea" for what you need. It came in pieces and you had to assemble it. But once it was done it worked out great.

We found a book case that we like at Lowe''s of all places! It assembles much like an Ikea one, but it looks a little better. Still not "high quality" furniture, but the price was right at just over $100 AND we had a gift card, so it was "free".

The happiness was short lived.... it was, in fact, a one-night stand! When we opened the box this morning to assemble it, several parts were damaged... so we took it back, which set in place an awesome turn of events.

We were planning to head to Ikea, but then M remembered this great furniture store we hadn''t been to in a while, so we went there and though we didn''t find a bookcase, we did find a CHINA CABINET!!! A Herman Miller cabinet at HALF price! We''d been looking for one for a while but hadn''t saved up the $2k yet... but for $800+ free delivery, we couldn''t pass it up!!!

So, excited about that, we did eventually end up at Ikea and their Billy line has been redesigned a bit since I last bought one and they look nicer now! So we bought a dark Billy bookcase and a set of tall glass doors for just $179. So now we have a beautiful glass paneled door bookcase to store all our pantry items, and it''s only 11 inches deep!!! How''s that for shallow?

The hinges aren''t on quite perfect yet, but I''m going to let it settle and adjust before I mess with it anymore, but we''re thrilled with it. I''ll probably frost the glass, or maybe put decorative paper behind it so that nobody thinks we''re so proud of our pasta sauce and mini wheats we have put them on display!

Sum, I was cracking up at your ad idea...tall wide and shallow might not get many responses but you never know!!

What about a nice wrought iron wall rack? It could look nice and more airy, assuming you can find one in the dimensions you need. I love those in a kitchen.

Too funny sumbride! Sounds like you really got a treasure though! Anything that doesn''t require part B insertion into part D, following locating all parts before assembly is a winner in my book. Free delivery, woo hoo!
