My girlfriend loves hearts and insists on an engagement ring with a heart shaped diamond. She saw a particular ring and fell in love with it, but not only does it not have a heart shaped diamond, the diamonds are fake. So, I've been searching the internet for months trying to find something similar that has a heart shaped center diamond. It would be great if anyone has seen similar rings and can point me in the right direction. She likes the filigree but loves the heart shapes on the sides.

Getting a ring custom made has been in my mind, but I''m afraid to even ask how much it would cost. My budget is $5,000 and I''m looking to get a 1ct heart shaped center diamond which would be at least $3,000 right there. I can''t imagine a custom ring with side stones would be made for $2,000 or less.

That particular setting is easily available and it would be a very simple modification to fit a heart shaped stone to it. This can be accomplished by using the prongs on one side of the ring and removing the prongs on the opposite side, replacing them with a pair of single larger prongs which could be bent into each other to form a double prong at the end of the heart. From the side this would look like an "onion dome" or the top of the Taj Mahal where the new prongs come together and hold the point of the diamond. I''m not sure what sizes the side stones are, but I can''t imagine that the entire two ring set along with the modifications would cost more than $2000 and probably substantially less. Pick whoever you''re getting the diamond from and discuss it with them, you''ll probably be pleasantly surprised.

That''s encouraging to know it might not cost as much as I thought to have a ring custom made. I haven''t picked a jeweler yet to get the diamond from. I''m about an hour north of NYC, so I was thinking of heading to the diamond district, and I see a few places listed on this site from there that do custom work. I guess I''ll start there. Anyone have any experience with custom jewelry from a place in the diamond district?

Just a suggestion:

Would buying this pendant for the heart-shape stone and then getting a custom setting to make it into an engagement ring make sense?

.70 ct heart shape diamond VS2 clarity I color for $2799.99.

You might even be able to trade in the platinum when you make the custom ER setting.

I''ve been in contact with a couple of places and some say they won''t make the ring because of copyright issues. Others quote $1,000 to $1,200 to custom make the engagement ring. I contacted the place that sells the ring set and they said they would sell the settings only without the fake diamonds. I''ve mentioned that to a couple places and they say it would still be better to custom make the ring rather than modify the existing setting to fit a heart shaped diamond. What is the reason for that? I figured it would be fairly easy to do and be less money all together to do it that way. Is it hard to work with gold in that way or does it just not hold up unless it''s casted in one piece?

Danger,

If I were you, I''d just have it custom made (and I''m sure it can be done for close to $2000 if you stick with white gold) and have the same jeweler source you a heart-shaped diamond. Both pieces, one place. It''ll be easier that way.

Two companies I''ve worked with for custom (or semi-custom) pieces and recommend are Brian Gavin Diamonds and Whiteflash. Get some quotes and see who can create exactly what you need for the price you want to spend.

I am a sucker for hearts too; I would see about getting the ring custom made. I have a 1/2 ct heart diamond in a RHR that I had mounted in a sapphire semi mount and wear it frequently.
