hi all,
Have just received a lovely cushion tanzanite, but I'm struggling to find a setting that lights up my eyes...don't really want to add too much bulk as the stone is already 10mm square, but want to protect the edges from damage. In my view, plain settings don't really seem to enhance the colour of tanzanites, I'd like something that lets some light get through.....I think I'm going to go for a halo setting using very tiny diamonds, but not really sure....really want to love the end result - wondering if people have any other ideas?

here's a link to the stone.....

Simple diamonds traps on the side like this one would loook Royal. I don’t know if it’s enough protection

beautiful ring, I love it. thinking I need to expand my spend a fair bit though for the addition of 2 nice sized diamonds ...what do you reckon around price for a pair like in your ring?
edited to say..... my stone is 10mm in size, am going to have a look for a pair of trapezoids as this ring is talking to me! I'm thinking something in the region of 5-6mm at its longest would work against a 10mm stone?

Does tanzanite not need more protection? I thought bezel is a must.

I'm not sure how tanzanites compare to zircons but I live dangerously and have my zircon set without much protection. I only wear it out on dates with my girlfriends or hubby though! Not around all day, every day.

6 or 7 would be good. I’m looking for diamond traps too with 4 mm sides for my square 7.5mm stone. But not finding them at all. No jeweller seems to have them.. do let me know if you have better luck

It is such a pretty stone. I would not halo it as it would detract from the stone. I like the three stone setting. If you do not want to go the diamond route then perhaps look for a beautiful yellow gold custom setting that has an interesting design that creates a bezel.

Imagine Yg, Pt or else instead of black - WWW

The back of the stone could be very open !

How about doing a bezel set and leave it a solitaire, but have diamonds on the band?

My 4.88 sapphire is a 9X8 roval. It has a bezel in 18k yellow gold and tiny diamonds in the platinum halo. The setting is very open in the back and doesn't darken it at all.

Oh my god that’s too lovely. I have a halo but no bezel. It’s a bit high up and not set deep into the ring. I wear it occasionally.

This is my tanzanite ring I've had for over 15 years- approx 3.5 carats if memory serves me right. No damage... granted it's not an every day ring though I've gone through stages of wearing it every day for months at a time. I love the setting gemobsessed posted for your stone!

Zircon is much tougher, I think, correct me if I'm wrong, and also far less expensive, right?

Oh yes it's super affordable and but so sparkly (hence my soft spot for it).

I was told it was really brittle and to never loup it!

However you set it, I would like to see the stone on a diagonal so it's like a baseball diamond shape. Pictured is an example, except I would prong set it as bezel setting can chip sifter stones like tanzanite.

that is such a beautiful setting, beautiful stone. If my stone were a little smaller I'd definitely go for something like this.. just gorgeous :)

that's lovely too. Help me out though, why would a bezel setting chip? in my naivety I'd have thought it gave the ultimate protection all the way round the stone?

I love this setting too. Thank you for sharing :) I'm going to take your picture and gemobsessed's as well and get a bit of guidance from the jeweller , very exciting!

googling brings me up Israel-diamonds website which has a heap of paired trapezoid diamond sets....not yet checked them out for authenticity though...?

Oh hey thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately they only ship within the US. I live in singapore :(

I can't vouch for the Israel-Diamonds itself but their website states it does offer worldwide shipping.

I believe it is more a question of the setter's skill. Sometimes the setter isn't skilled with softer stones and chips it under the bezel since the metal lip is hammered down around the edge.

Hey looks like I was looking at the wrong website!
Thank you for the correction !

Yes, a bezel protects a stone's edges more, but the actual process of setting it, has much much more potential to damage the stone. I've seen a diamond that chipped in a bezel setting, so with a tanzanite, I would really worry, unless you had the most proficient and skilled bezel setter there is.
