first post but have been lurking and reason for the past several months as I have been on the hunt for a blue sapphire engagement ring

I have a pretty good idea what I want to get but have been all over the internet looking at gems and reading/learning as much as I can. Due to work and location online will be my preferred method of finding a quality gemstone

I have been on many sites but have not been able to commit to any just yet...

Ideally would like around a 7-8mm cushion cut but not sure if that is realistic given my price point

Anyone have suggested site/gem that would make this purchase not seem so daunting

Thanks!!

Welcome to the world of colored gems! :)) The "best" places to look will depend a lot on what you're after in terms of cut - are commercial (or "native") cuts OK? Are you looking for a "precision" cut gem? Do you want a heated or an unheated stone? There are a ton of great vendors in the reference thread pinned at the top of the page. That might be a great place to start.

Yes, first decide your budget for the stone. Then decide whether treated or untreated (untreated are more expensive). Then decide shape and colour tone. Blue sapphires come in tones from inky blue black to pale light blue. Unlike diamonds that pretty much come in a standard size for their carat weight, sapphires can be deep or shallow depending on the gem it was cut from as sapphires have natural colour zoning. A cutter is always trying to get an even colour when looking straight down. This means it’s hard to find a “standard” ring mount to fit the sapphire, most would have to be custom made and that can be more expensive. And please, try and stick to the known and recommended vendors on PS, there are plenty of poor quality stones, synthetic sapphires and unscrupulous sellers waiting for a novice buyer to come along. For eg. eBay is not the best place to buy gems from without advice from experienced people.

Ok I have gone thru the entire listing of preferred vendors and well thought it would make it easier but it has only made it more difficult o_O

So here goes my wish list based on me being willing to pay upwards of $4k for the right gemstone

Cut- "precision cut" but as long as a "native cut" is not really wonky and everything else lines up nice that would be ok. I don't want to get involved in re-cutting (seems like too much of a hassle?). Is there certain types of cuts that work better e.g. round vs cushion etc? (Setting- I would like a split shank, halo with diamonds about 1/2 to 3/4 on the shank part)

Inclusions- Eye clean with no "windows"- I myself do not want to be looking at the ring and see flaws- now having said that I have see some pictures of stones that are eye clean that look like they have issues... I'm just not sure what a flawless vs eye clean really is

Treatment- Untreated or heated I'm not really sure if it matters but if I had a choice with everything else being equal I would go with the natural untreated

Color- Darker blue tone and saturation but not a "navy" blue... I like the

As with everyone I want it all  and not at a big price tag. lol

Happy to hear ! .-)

The light blues are my thing - many 'Pastel' colours, in fact ...

The 2 carat cushion seems obviously nicest blue. Would love to see it next to the 2.1 - also very nice & perhaps a different shade.

Since you had some purple in the ET list, would something like this appeal?0

Anyone have thoughts on this one? Is it due to not being precision cut? And if so how bad is this cut and how is one to know if it will look good in a setting if it is a native cut?

There's no denying that precision cutting it top of the line but that doesn't mean that all native cutting is bad. This one looks like good cutting to me. I don't think you'd have any issues with a ring setting.

Just for reference, I have this spinel and it is not precision cut but there's nothing noticeably "off" about it. If the native cut on a gem is bad, you would notice right away from the pics.

Can you guys help me with these. I surprised myself with the colours that I liked

Any all input welcome

ETA: This response is to the group you posted. I really like the options elle posted.

The last one Cornflower blue is a lovely color but because of the cut it will have a slightly darker band that crosses the middle. Will you be okay with that? This is not a bad thing just something that happens with oval or rectangular shapes. Let your preference guide you.

The 2ct Sky Blue is an oval but has had facets added that make it appear more brilliant. The 2.10 ct oval will also be brilliant but is quite a bit more money.

The 2.42 round looks a bit gray to me. I don't like the cut as much either.

The lilac stone is a total departure from the other stones. Will your FI like that color?

Just thought I'd come back and let you guys know that after much reading and the help of this site I worked with Jeff at earthstreasury.com and ended up with this. Looking forward to actually having it in my hands to see how well it turned out.... and I really can't wait to see her reaction :)

Thanks again to those that provided some guidance and I would not hesitate to recommend Jeff to anyone in the future.
