Looking for studs for wife's birthday

I'm beginning to look for some diamond stud earrings for my wife's birthday, which is coming up in late January. To be honest, I don't really know where to begin looking. I would say my budget is around 1k-1.25k, though I would prefer to stay closer to the bottom of that range. She doesn't know I'm planning on getting them for her, but from earlier conversations I know she would like something around 1 ctw. I realize that on my budget that probably isn't possible, but I would say that in making a decision the bigger the better.

Anyone have any recommendations? Would J color, SI2 likely be okay? Many thanks. Really appreciate the help.

I think if you're looking to maximize budget J SI2s are a great idea in the sizes you're looking at :))

diamond colour is especially visible through the pavilion, but since they'll be in her ears noone will get close enough, or angled enough, to see it, and should be easy to find a clean SI2 in the 0.5ct range.

I like shallower stones for studs than the usual H&A proportions - dirt on the pavilion (inevitable w/ earrings) affects light return less, they show less body colour than deeper stones, and they face up bigger for their carat weight.. unfortunately I'm having trouble finding potential stones in your budget, would you be willing to drop size?

Hi there :)

I think J SI2 is totally fine for 1ctw earrings!

ID Jewelry has some 1ctw J/K color SI1 clarity for $950 (in 14K) or some 1ctw G/H color SI1 clarity for $1275.

Thanks Yssie and LALove.

LALove (and others), do you think that K color would be ok? If so, the pair from ID Jewelry sounds like they could be great. I can't seem to find them on the website. Do you have the diamonds specs?

Yssie, thanks for looking around. I would be willing to drop size if nothing seems to exist within the current budget.

Again, really appreciate the help.

Oops. Sorry for the confusion. I am looking for rounds. For some reason my computer was having problems with the IDJ link, so I didn't see that they were princesses.

The JA ones Yssie just posted are lovely.

The White Flash Ready set to go studs are very popular here on Pricescope.

As for color I don't like to go below H on earrings because I like whiter stones but many people here like J/K since they face up white.

Your wife will be so excited.

Thanks Marcy. How would you compare the JA pair to the WF .75 ctw ready set go diamonds? Is one better in terms of quality? Value? I'm guessing the .05 ctw difference wouldn't be very visually apparent?

Also, it seems from my browsing that most people here prefer martini settings. If so, how come?

Thanks again.

Hi nola- I thought I linked rounds. I meant to anyways. Oops. If you go to their site (idjewelryonline.com) and click on "earrings" and then "diamond stud earrings" and then click their "preset diamond stud earrings" link and it brings you to a page where you can pick the metal (14K white gold, 18K or platinum) and the setting and then the size/color/clarity.

For 14k white gold, 4 prong basket setting, 1ctw round J/K color, SI clarity it's $950. I'd call them and tell them what you're looking for- if you kind of mind warmer colors in diamonds ask for some high Js as opposed to Ks and I'd add to ask for eye clean stones. I don't mind Js or Ks :)

If you want certified diamonds they also have those for a bit more- starting at about $1300 for 1ctw K color, SI2 ex cut.

ETA: I'd get the ones Yssie linked if they qualify for a trade up policy in case your wife wants to go bigger in the future. They look great- higher color and clarity and for only $250 more! Also they're certified so you'll know for sure what you're buying. They're 40 pointers and about 4.7ish mm and 50 pointers are *about* 5-5.2mm so it's not a huge difference but .5mm bigger is noticeable.

I like them because of how close they sit to the ear, plus the 8-prong martini make my stone look bigger and rounder.

First off, what a fantastic gift for your wife!

I own a pair of diamond studs from BGD, they are Ks and face up super white, even when set in platinum. Have you considered bezel settings? The bezel setting adds about 1.5mm to the size of the diamond, giving it a larger appearance. For example, my studs are .37 ct each, but the bezel setting makes them look about .5 ct each.

From the very helpful advice I've been getting so far (J/K is likely all right, bezel would be a nice addition, high marks for ID Jewelry, etc.), a set similar to what galleygal purchased in late June may be perfect: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/bezel-studs-from-id-jewelry.145731/. My largest concern continues to be the color. Would a white gold bezel setting accentuate or decrease the effect of any warmth? Galleygal, if you happen to give this a read, would you recommend your studs?

Hi. I think either the JA or WF would both be high quality. Side by side you might notice the .05 ctw but on the ears either would be a great size.

IMHO on martinis - they are very classy looking but I have heard they are not as comfortable to wear and the posts can be thicker so they can stretch the hole in the ear. I tried a pair on one time and found them uncomfortable.

I just got J color bezel studs and they look white-I don't think they look 'tinted' at all.

I just read over the thread you linked to and noticed I posted TWICE in it...basically saying the same thing. Silly me!

Thank you slg47 (and everyone else).

I'm zeroing in on the ID pre-set 1 ctw, J/K, SI, in a bezel setting.

What questions should I ask the seller? Does ID Jewelry pick ideal cut stones for their pre-set earrings? Should I get IS images? Ask for assurance that they are eye-clean?

Thanks again.
