Hello, I would like to buy a fancy blue-green cushion-cut sapphire directly from the source or at least directly from a gemstone broker. It should be no smaller than 5ct and my budget is max. 2000$. Is it realistic? Could anyone recommend a reliable e-vendor who's especially expert at sapphires? I live in Belgium and I am sure there is money to be saved by not going through a local jeweller's here in Brussels. I have seen the list of reputable vendors on this site and gone through most of their websites but I haven't found anything that really corresponds to my criteria. Most stones are round or oval and I would really like a cushion.

I like the look of the Montana stones in the Natural Sapphire Company but they are not big and very very expensive. Surely there must be better value out there?

Thanks for any input and advice.

$2K is not realistic for a 5 carat heated blue green sapphire. Just to be sure, a 5 carat corundum measures out to be around 10 mm thereabouts in a round shape. Are you truly looking for such a large stone? A cushion cut will be slightly larger than 11 x 9 mm.

sapphires are very expensive in the first and the size you are seeking? well, $2k just isn't going to buy you what you want.

whether Montana or Australia, blue/green sapphires usually don't come in such large sizes and when they do they are for a premium price.

Hi

If you live in Belgium you can go to Munich Show in October.

You will be able to contact a lot of vendors - and you can compare prices.

Around 1600 EUR for 5ct is not realistic - hope you want a beautiful bluegreen sapphire!

Thanks for all the answers. The stone should ideally be rectangular but perhaps I am dreaming when I think I can find one of 5 ct on my budget. It is going to be set on its own so I was imagining something quite big. I started out looking at aquamarine and tourmaline (posted some pictures here last week) but after reading posts here I realized that those stones are too soft for everyday wear. When I saw some blue-green sapphires I thought that would be perfect. In some places it says that blue-green are less valuable than blue and that gave me hope. I wouldn't mind a lab-grown stone but if I understood correctly they don't make them in blue-green? The 4 ct stone is too blue for my liking.

That stone is really dark and will look very black/grey when set. Is that something you would want???

Try contacting http://www.coolamonsapphires.com/from Australia. They have plenty of larger stones in blue-green colour and prices are (i think) quite reasonable. For 5ct you may need to raise your budget. I'd focus on the actual mm size that will suit your hand and go from there.

No, I don't want a dark stone so thank you for the heads-up. I will check that website. Thanks a lot!

Check out http://winkcz.com

Check out the colors they have and you can contact them to help you source something for you whether it's natural or lab grown.

A blue green sapphire is less expensive than a straight blue sapphire but at 5 carats, it is still an expensive stone. A 3 ct bright blue green can run you close to $4K but a 3 ct dark blue green will be less.

This one is rectangular, over 5 carats and within budget because of the orange colour zoning at one end of the stone.

Chrono: Thanks for taking your time with me again! I am glad to see that it is possible to find some sort of blue-green sapphire within my budget. I don't mind about the orange zoning as much as the fact that the stone looks very dark and not particularly colourful (other than the orange...). This gives me hope, though! I have contacted several of the cutters recommended here on price scope and maybe one of them will come back with something. I really enjoy reading the posts here on the forum and I feel like I have learnt so much about gemstones in a short period of time! :-)
