I took my ring size when we went shopping two weeks ago. 4½ was too tight and 5 was a bit loose, so we figured 4¾ would be good. The thing is, it''s winter and my fingers swell up in summer, like everyone else''s, hence the question.

Should I get a 4¾ that will be tight in summer, or a 5 that will be loose in winter and probably spin? What do you do, and why?

When you say "a bit loose", did you mean it'd fit over your finger easily, or do you mean you have to hold it steady with your other fingers?

I'm a 6, and my ring is a 6.25. I didn't want a tight ring under any circumstances...those are uncomfortable!

I''ve gained like 20 pounds since I got married 2.5 years ago (which I''m working on, lol!). My fingers, thankfully, are still the same size, I don''t know how, though. My ring still spins when my hands are cold, no matter if it''s because of air conditioning in the summer or I''m freezing in the winter. My hands swell when I work out, so I have to take my rings off before I work out to avoid the pain of the swelling. I''ve had my blood pressure checked a few times recently, and it''s normal. I went with a 6.75 ring, and I''m thinking you should go for the 4.75 also. There will always be fluctuations in your ring size, but it''s what you are comfortable with when your hands are a normal temp.

Will you be wearing a wedding ring eventually? My e-ring is loose if I wear it alone, but the wedding ring pushes it up to a more fleshy part of my finger.

I''d go for a tighter wedding ring, because I never take mine off so there''s no problem with scraped knuckles, but a quarter size bigger in the e-ring.

If you are expecting a long engagement, I''d get the e-ring a quarter size smaller and then have it sized up if necessary after the wedding.

My finger size changes depending on time of the month as well as time of year.

My ring is a size 5 right now and too loose in the winter especially with the new setting. The halo actually leans down to my knuckle many times. Pete at Quest told me to wait to resize it in the summer. On the day I went to see him with my old setting I was retaining so it was a bit tight.

I think I need a 4.75 too I tried on a 4 1/2 and it was a little tight.

It''s no fun when the ring is tight - I''d get it a 1/4 size bigger. Besides, it will be more snug when there''s a wedding band next to it.

I mean there wasn't much resistance when I pulled it over my knuckle. I didn't need to hold it with my other fingers.

cinnabar - Yes, I'm planning on wearing a wedding ring ( a plain 2mm white gold band) and yes, I'm expecting a long engagement - 2 years if I'm lucky, but most probably 3 because of a school transfer. So you think I should get a 4.75 for now and have it resized if needed when I get married? I hadn't thought about that, but it makes sense.

Thanks for the input Monarch and Princess V!

ETA: Thanks, FireGoddess... It seems people have different opinions here! lol

I think you should get the larger size with "speed bumps" inside.

Get it a little bigger with a horseshoe spring that way it won''t spin and will be secure on your finger in all types of weather.

I had a U-bar soldered in my ring because I didn''t want to size it any further. It was about 1/2 a size too big. The cool thing about it is the fact that it keeps my ring from turning (my ring is very top-heavy) and if I happen to be bloated or swelled up, I have some space above the bar for the extra meat to go! It''s very comfortable too.

My ring is 1/2 size smaller than what it should have been. My hands also swell in the humidity and in the morning when I wake up so far it''s been okay.

I''ve been doing a bit of a test today and wearing a ring on my right middle finger that has the same size as if I had a size 5 ring on my left ring finger. It feels loose and spins; the top keeps leaning on my ring finger. It bugs the heck out of me and I keep fiddling with it. I''ll either have a horse-shoe spring added (that appletini!) or order a 4.75 and have it sized up to 5 when we''ll get married.

Thanks for the advice everyone!!
