Hi,

I want to get engaged and looking to make a custom ring.

Is this Ruby good enough to set in 18ct gold?

The Cut, clarity etc. When it says fracture filled, would there be problems down the line?

Thanks for any feedback

Judging by the price I take it you have limited budget - this ruby may have durability issues and it most probably won’t look nice. If red and ruby are a must, I would suggest a synthetic ruby, similar or lower in price and exponentially better quality.

Thanks for responding. Could you link me to such a piece.

I once looked into lab created gems and they were in the thousands of dollars.

A simple google search for synthetic ruby will yield hundreds of result, you can pick anything really. There several methods to create rubies, but two that are most abundant in the market:

- flame fusion. cheap and quick (hours), basically layers of powdered chromium enriched aluminum stacked on top of each other at high temperature. The result is a boule which can be cut and faceted. Such rubies will cost anywhere between 1 and 5 dollars per carat
- flux grown rubies. The process simulates the natural growth process and needs a seed ruby to start from. Takes longer (months) and is significantly more expensive. These rubies are more durable and cost hundreds of dollars per carats

try ebay or etsy to start with, a few dollars will provide several options to choose from.

good luck!

Also, if you can spend ca. USD 500, Gary Brown from Finawatergems will cut a synthetic ruby of any size and shape for you. Precision cut and of great color, I have one and it looks spectacular :)

If this is not of interest, please disregard. I have a nice precision cut lab ruby from Gene at Precision Gems that I bought recently but decided to let go since I've already spent too much on jewelry lately. I listed it briefly on Loupetroop.com but took my listings down because I am getting ready to move and don't want to bother with too much.

Anyway, since you might be looking for one, on the off chance you're interested I'll let it go to a US buyer for $300 PayPal Friends and Family only, no returns. If not, no worries!

P.S. Will post the receipt in a sec.

Or if you want to pick exactly what size and shape lab ruby you get, besides Finewater Gems and Precision Gems, a couple of others frequently mentioned on here are Stag & Finch, and Jeff White. I have purchased from both Finewater and Precision myself and been very pleased. Good luck with it!

Also, if you don't know already, lab rubies are the same molecular makeup as their mined counterparts, whereas there are also ruby look-alikes that are made up of other materials, if it matters to you.

Cutting matters too, as far as appearance (and price). Stones that are not precision cut are often less expensive but also have a large "window" in the middle of them, for ex.

Have we chatted on Insta about this? Maybe…I was the first to buy an aescher cut lab ruby from him - in fact I commissioned a very particular shape and he made tons of other lab stones based on it afterwards.

Gary Braun of Finewater Gems custom cut two lab rubies for earrings for me, they are glorious!

I'm sure you could pick up a nice one here for relatively little money.

* fracture filled ruby cannot take heat, bumps, or strenuous cleaning. Chemicals can make the filling dissolve as well. Not a safe gamble long term.
