I''ve just recently begun seriously looking at rings. My initial feelings on solitaires is that they are ordinary; I want something special, that doesn''t look like most other engagement rings. Paul, the man I adore, loves the simplicity of a solitaire. As do I. However, I have considered a bezel setting, but haven''t found a delicate, narrow band to go with bezeling that appeals to me. So now I''m wondering if there is a specific term used for a solitaire with prongs that sits low and isn''t raised up so high. Can anyone help us? Thanks!

Jen,

Have you thought about having a bezel custom made? Whiteflash makes gorgeous custom pieces and I'm sure your dream ring could become a reality in no time! If your boyfriend wanted some element of "surprise", you could let him pick the diamond, tell him you want a bezel and slip your ideal ring's measurements to Bob or Lesley.

My solitare is in a basket setting, which is pretty low. I don't like the "high" solitaires either, so I researched and found that a basket was perfect for me! I do love a gorgeous bezel, though.

What about a tension setting?

The bezels I''ve seen have a huge diamond in them; I want smaller and delicate. I''ve gotten a few ideas that I think could be incorporated into something ideal, though. I''m still trying to sell him on the idea of a bezel, though...

Tension settings usually have a band wider than I like. However, the "swirl" effect around the diamond is pretty and I''ve seen narrow bands that swirl up into a pretty setting. Maybe I can look for something like that.

I just don''t want the typical setting, since I do prefer smaller diamonds. I want it to have some element of "wow" and I want it to be special... Well, it will be, though. He has gotten really good at picking out pretty things that fit my tastes... I think I''m thinking about it too much because I''m so anxious for it now!

A friend of mine is considering this setting form James Allen that has that look, but isn''t a true tension setting:

Here''s a thread of low set diamond e-rings:

Maybe it will help you.

How about any of these?

From the ''Show Me the Ring'' thread...

I realise now that i should have provided links to all these, but i got them all from the show the ring thread (link above)!

Also, the Vatche X-prong setting is fairly low setting and they have several versions you can find here.

I''m really feeling partial to the swirl effect that curls around the diamond, and a wedding band that follows the wave effect. I am trying to decide if I like the idea of a ring like this with a prong setting holding it low, or a bezel.

At least now I have a few ideas for Paul; he can do what he likes best between a bezel setting, a swirl interlocking set, or an x-prong. Hopefully, whatever he chooses I''ll be able to keep safe on my careless hands!

Here''s a link to the solitaire version of the ring I want: Victory ring.
The setting is fishtail prong, meaning each of the prongs splits into three sections, and it''s considered very secure. It''s a fairly simple ring, and low profile, but definitely distinctive.

That victory ring is beautiful! I love the design on the band!

Link to my new favorite ring. Swirl style, bezel setting. I think I like it lots and lots!! (Here''s hoping Paul likes it.)
