Hi all,
I've recently become enamored with the Tiffany Lucida cut. Unfortunately, they're only available 2nd hand at this point since they've been discontinued by Tiffany.

Part 1: I found this super cool looking stone on JA that almost looks like a Lucida but wanted to see what fellow PSers thought.

Part 2: after looking at so many Lucidas, I realized that theres lots of variation in how they were cut.

Some examples below. The first 2 examples look more like the one I found on JA

These last 3 look totally different to me.

Anyone have insight into how a branded cut can have so much variation?? Do PSers think I should try to find a branded Lucida ring I like, or buy the look-alike? I dont care about the branding persay, but I do like the setting style a lot.

Same facets, different angles and % the same way an oec and mrb have the same facet design.

Thanks--that makes much more sense to me. I guess in my head a "branded" cut would have tighter parameters. I know you're limited in what you can say about stones from any given company, but do you think the JA one I found looks like the Lucida's I linked? Hopefully you can answer that since I'm not asking if you recommend it or not.

Tiffany experts: @yssie @Paisley2628 @RunningwithScissors, any thoughts on buying preloved vs the stone with a similar cut and having a setting made?

Pros of preloved: "branded" Tiffany, already has a setting I like (but see below--I'm not so in love with the setting that I would replicate it).

Cons of preloved: some Lucidas have cuts I don't like, some don't have GIA paperwork, and I would have to buy a smaller stone given the mark up for branded pieces.

Pros of buying the JA stone: I know it has the cut I like and GIA paperwork, the setting isnt super complex, and I am not sold on the setting from TIffanys. I like the thick band, but I'd probably choose a different "head/gallery" if I could.

Cons of JA stone: Not branded, I'd have to get a custom setting which isn't foolproof.

I see your predicament.

I think if it were me, I'd buy the JA because I'd want the larger size. Also, it would give you the option to tweak the setting to exactly how you want it.

I like the look of the JA and the first Tiffany Lucida you posted much more than I do the Lucidas that look very different.

Just my thoughts, but I don't think you'd go wrong either way, as long as all options offer a return policy in case you don't like it in person (images/videos never tell the whole story).

Fun new project - keep us posted!

Did you buy it? It’s gone.

HI:

cheers--Sharon

I put it on hold so I could get opinions and decide

I'm sorry- I can't be too much help to you!
It's very understandable why you are enamored with it - It is a beautiful diamond/ring.

I will admit as I've gotten older- I have a desire to get the branded pieces.

That's a beautiful stone - the JA!

Sorry, I'm not much help either! The Lucida brand seems to be based entirely on the facet pattern structure, so to speak, not the face-up appearance. Kind of like RBs can all have the same pattern structure and same facet diagram but look wildly different depending on precisely how that structure is implemented.

I also like the JA and the first Lucida best. Same as @RunningwithScissors. Given the PITA factor of finding the Right Stone on the preloved market and then authenticating it - I'd probably go with something like that JA, myself, unless the brand is especially important to you for this piece. Just my 2c though. I can totally understand someone else preferring the brand route.

Here are the Design Patents for the patent numbers corresponding to the two Lucidas on the EraGem website that @Canuck-gal provided, if you'd like to see the cut designs as patented.
For the older, .64 ct Lucida - patent # 5,970,744 (the original patent issued in 1999)
For the later, rectangular 1.15 ct one - patent # D463,315 S (issued in 2002) https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/3b/2c/6d/a4c161cd3cda97/USD463315.pdf

And here's the sheet for Mr. Greef's 2001 design patent #D442,114 S, for another "cut-cornered square mixed-cut gemstone" where the application referred to his original 1999 patent for what was first marketed as the Lucida:

This May be a larger than what you are looking for but here is a 2 carat Lucida:

I can certainly appreciate your willingness to find a diamond without the exact Tiffany setting. It is probably the most cost effective way to capitalize on size and your money. However, if it is the real thing you crave, buying preloved may just be the ticket for you! Good luck - can’t wait to see which way you land!
