Trigger warning: This might be an upsetting topic for some. It's about babies being harmed by a NICU nurse, Lucy Letby.

*******************************************************************************************************************

Have people heard about this case? It's been going on for almost a year. The jury deliberated for five weeks. Finally the verdicts were in yesterday. She murdered seven premature NICU babies and attempted to murder six more. There were 17 babies attacked a total of 22 times, so there were 22 charges. On about six of the charges, the jury were hung. She might face a retrial for those. But she has been involved in many more deaths - 13 deaths, although she was only charged for 7 deaths - and at least 2 at a previous hospital where she worked. There's an investigation ongoing into all 4,000 babies she treated during her career, plus into cover-ups at the hospital that resulted in more babies losing their lives because they wouldn't take her off the unit after doctors raised their concerns.

Other people have come forward and said their babies came to harm while being treated by her. One mom on the NICU unit says she was discussing with her partner how well her baby was doing, and Letby was eavesdropping. She said not to get their hopes up about their son's survival. The mom made a complaint, and the following day, she briefly left her son's side to get a coffee. When she returned, he had collapsed and a team was working on him. She'd injected him with insulin as revenge on the mom. Of course, they didn't know that at the time. Someone else has come forward and says that her son's heel is covered in scars because Letby treated him and would take ten tries to get blood from a heel prick whereas other nurses would take one or two goes. Someone else online says her husband worked at Letby's hospital and years ago it was common knowledge that a nurse there was killing babies. But when the doctors raised their concerns, they were disciplined and had to apologize to her.

She murdered 2 out of 3 triplets, and was planning to murder the third, as a sympathy card she had written to the parents including all three was found at her home. The third only escaped because the parents insisted he be transferred elsewhere. She attacked some of the babies up to four times, becoming increasingly violent. She's the only staff member who was on duty for all 22 attacks (and the next most frequently working staff member on those 22 shifts was only there for 7 of them.) And the attacks stopped after she was taken off the unit.

The entire thing is simply unbelievable. How does someone get that way? How can anyone do that? Some of the babies only weighed a couple of pounds and were a day old. And she attacked twins as well as triplets. She must be one of the top five worst killers in history, globally.

I just learned about this yesterday.
Shocking.

The hospital's mucky mucks knew about this RN baby killer but kept quiet.
They were more worried about their jobs and the image of their hospital than stopping the babies from being killed.

This reminds me of bishops and cardinals transferring molesting priests instead of reporting them to the police. :nono::nono::nono:

Disgusting!

This hospital is 20 minutes away from where I live & she trained at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital where my youngest was born. Thankfully she was born the year before & wasn’t an ICU baby.

There will be more deaths uncovered at the hands of this evil woman. I fear this will snowball & she will be tried whilst already in jail. I hope she is there for a VERY long time. Yuk.

I too just heard about this yesterday. That sort of evil is just something we can't understand - and don't want to!

I think that the infant deaths should have raised alarms long before they did. Not wanting to believe it is one of your own or trying to protect your image is inexcusable in the face of the death of these little babes. Lucy is where she needs to be for the rest of her life; you can't fix that kind of evil.

I did not read the article because I did not want the details in my head. But, if there was indeed hospital executives that suspected/knew this was occurring and did nothing about it, or covered it up for the sake of hospital reputation, then they should also join her in prison.

This.

Feeling all sorts of emotions as I read this but mostly upset by the depravity of this story (both on the side of the nurse and also the officials who failed to take immediate action). Praying for comfort and justice for those families that suffered the immeasurable loss of their precious babies.

This is horrific!!! She belongs in prison for the rest of her life. I can’t even imagine the pain these families will go thru the rest of their lives. So heartbreaking.

It is stunning that the management point-blank refused to believe the doctors who raised concerns. After all, such cases are not completely unprecedented. And the doctors had to APOLOGIZE to the killer!!

I have just watched live the Judge hand her a whole life sentence.

She will die in prison.

Is there a chance of parole? We have that here in the states, so there are times when a life sentence does not actually amount to a life sentence.

She refused to attend court when the family' statements were presented, and her sentence was delivered.

That means she did not have to hear her victims' loved ones looking her in the eye to tell her of the damage she inflicted on not just the baby, but the survivors. :angryfire::angryfire::angryfire:
What a coward. :nono:

IIRC UK intends to work to change the law so the convicted must appear to face their shame in court.
Kudos to the UK!

BBC reports:
  • Lucy Letby was given a whole-life term, with no chance of parole, for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more

I knew of the case, and I’m glad that she’ll die in prison. She‘ll have to be segregated because there’ll be a lot of other prisoners who’ll have it out for her. Whatever happens to her, there won’t be anyone shedding any tears.

So when do the civic cases start getting filed against the hospital, board members, hospital executives? There is going to be a bunch of them! Can't imaging what the value of the damages will be - is there an amount high enough?

Or will there be more criminal charges?

Did any doctors get sued for malpractice as a result of her actions? They should file suit too.

Boy, those board members thought a smudged image was going to be bad if they admitted they were investigating a baby murder on their staff? My guess the resulting civil suits will do a lot more damage.

I'm not sure about the civil suits, I'm sure it does happen but it's not something I hear a lot about in the news. (I'm in the UK).

The NHS is free to all (UK residents) at the point of use and I'm against the idea that we should be allowed to sue for malpractice. I know the murder of these babies is an incredibly sensitive issue, but in general I feel that when there are financial penalties against a hospital, all it does is reduce the finances available to pay for treatments for the rest of the population. A great deal of time and effort also goes into paperwork, the main focus of which is guarding against being able to sue. My opinion only, but I feel if we spent less time and money trying to cover our tracks then those resources could go towards delivery of a better service which in itself would result in less damaging outcomes for patients.

I believe a number of the nursing managers/hospital management have now been suspended.

I was not saying the doctors deserve to be sued, I was saying that they should sue the hospital themselves, if they indeed were made to suffer.

My opinion only here too, but if the only punishment, for the hospital administrators that allowed this to continue to save face, is to be suspended, then it is no wonder they are willing to let it go on.

Suing the hospital is what I took from your comments. UK hospitals are funded by the tax paper. Suing the hospital, means in my eyes, that there is less hospital money to pay for treatments for others.

The background details are still emerging. I'm sure there will be a public enquiry at the very least.

She's a monster.

I can't imagine the pain the parents feel.

I've been following this story for a while now. It is beyond sickening that the doctors' concerns were so easily dismissed. A medical colleague of mine was a whistleblower many years ago in a catastrophic hospital scandal, and the fact that these doctors have had to 'sit back' and wait to gather evidence while tiny babies die, is just gut-wrenching. And the fact that they also had to apologise to her...there are just no words. My heart is torn to pieces thinking about the parents who lost their littlies, who would have survived had they been elsewhere.

i wouldnt say Ive been following the story but ive read lost of articles in the last year as it has been making news here

tragic and shocking and my heart breaks for the parents and the lost babies

a trully evil woman, the death penalty (I dont think they still have that in the UK) would be too good for her
i'd bring back hard labor breaking rocks in the hot sun/ freezing winter and on bread and water
i would think someone in prison will 'get' her sooner or latter

i was reading the other day there will have been more babies, and that they should look at cases from when she was a student nurse

anyway go hug your children today
