I've been thinking about wedding bands lately, which makes me think of engraving, which makes me think of this song by Dave Matthews (I believe my MOH is going to sing it at our wedding

). The lyrics are just beautiful... and my FI is an obsessive DMB fan, so I'd love to have "Steady as we go..." engraved in his wedding band.

Steady As We Go

I'll walk halfway around the world
Just to sit down by your side
And I would do most anything
To be the apple of your eye
Well troubles, they may come and go
But good times, they're the gold
And if the road gets rocky, girl
Just steady as we go

Any place you wanna go
Know I'll be next to you
If it's treasure, baby, you're looking for
I'll search the whole world through
I know troubles, they may come and go
But good times, they're the gold
So if the road gets rocky, girl
Just steady as we go

When the storm comes down you shelter me
When I don't say a word and you know exactly what i mean
In the darkest times, oh, you shine on me
You set me free and keep me steady as we go

So if your heart wrings dry, my love
I will fill your cup
And if your load gets heavy, girl
I will lift you up
Well troubles, they may come and go
But good times be the gold
So if the road gets rocky, girl
Just steady as we go

Just wanted to share!

"Steady as we go". Love it!

I think "Steady as we go" is a great saying to have engraved in your bands. It sentimental for a few reasons...perfect idea Eph!!!

What FABULOUS lyrics! I''m a big DMB fan but I''d never listened to that song. I just downloaded! THANKS Ephemery! I think it''s perfect for the ring!

ephemery:

this is one of my favorite dave matthews'' songs! i love that you''re doing something different, and personal for your fiance''s band... should be fantastic!

are you having something engraved for your band?

This is sort of off topic (but on topic)--- don''t kill me for this

It just brought back a really funny memory for me!

The quote that I used for my highschool year book was from the band STYX.
(Oy oh, yes, it''s true. I used to LOVE them!)
"Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime..." and while it''s still a great quote,
I cringe everytime I think of it. It''s so dated.
Remember that your wedding ring is FOREVER, and you want it to be TIMELESS
While I also love the DMB, will you still love that quote when you are 85?
I honestly thought that Styx was timeless back then, but...
This is just to play devils advocate...
Don''t kill me please

We had "The Luckiest 10-08-06" engraved in our bands- gotta love Ben Folds. I think "Steady as we go" is a sweet sentiment.

I am totally with Tybee on this one.. That is going to be severely dated in 30, if not 10 years. And Dave Matthews is not a person I would want associated with my marriage..

I wasn''t really making a statement about Dave Matthews, but just about the choice of a more timeless quote for your wedding band.
Music directly affects our lives, our relationships, our feelings, but our muscial tastes change over time, and that
favorite song might not be such a favorite song after several years.
( Although I''d love to know why you wouldn''t want him associated with your marriage MS)

We certainly used music quotes and music all through our ceremony. I just think of your ring being ''
more ''forever'' than a song that you love right now.---

The thing is, "Steady as We Go" is a much older phrase than this DMB song... I do think it's timeless and I do think it's lovely. Whether you associate it with the song or with your love for each other standing the test of time, I think you'll be ok. I believe it's actually a nautical phrase, but I've been trying to find it all day and can't locate anything online. Dave didn't coin it himself, I assure you!

And MelissaSue, I'm very curious as to why Dave is a bad association... he seems to be a generally good guy, very involved in social projects all over the world, even raises amazing organic beef in VA. Yum! And he's married with kids, right? twins, I think. Seems to be deeply in love with his wife. Am I missing something?

eta: My FI and I met, in part, because we both love REM. He mentioned them in his online profile and I was thrilled so I wrote to him. When he gave me my ipod last year he had it engraved "You are the everything." which is a lyric from my favorite REM song and a really sweet sentiment. True, the ipod will bite the dust long before a wedding band, but I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing that engraving... and the song is already 20 years old anyway. It was personal and sweet and only we "got" it. I think that's what it's supposed to be.

I guess my point is, (and it''s really because I am a much older person than most of you)
that your tastes will definitely change as you get older.
Mine seem laughable to me now-- and yes, maybe that won''t ever happen to you, but I wanted to throw it out
there for consideration. Feel free to laugh at ME along with me!

If I married my college boyfriend, I could totally imagine quoting The Grateful Dead on his ring...
(oh true, true, true, what a fan I was... how many shows I saw... but another story entirely.)
Or maybe the Indigo Girls.
I''m telling you, I thought it was timeless back then.

I love Ben Harper now... and we used a lot of Stevie Wonder in our wedding celebration, but I don''t think
I''d engrave lyrics from their songs into a forever ring.

Anyhow. I didn''t mean to rain on anyone''s parade. Certainly not yours ephemery

I do think it''s a nice quote, and it''s nice if it means something to you both.
I just thought I''d share, because I always laugh when I think about my yearbook quote.

Oooh lots of interesting discussion generated from my one little song quote! Tybee, I totally understand your point and appreciate your perspective... I agree that choosing something timeless is important for a "forever" item like a wedding band, though I also think that quotes in general are most meaningful when they are representative of specific times in our lives. Their deeper meaning comes from the shared moment behind it, not so much the quote/phrase/artist/author themselves. For example, our cousin had "you''re my lobster" engraved in his wife''s band (Friends reference) when they were married 9 years ago. It may not be "timeless", so to speak, but it is a special shared phrase that carries meaning for both of them... more meaning than a quote from Shakespeare or a Latin phrase.

Actually, I think that is exactly what Sum was explaining with her IPod quote as an example... and as she pointed out, "steady as we go" wasn''t exactly Dave Matthews'' invention.

I don''t have any problem with him as a person either... my fiance loves his music and the work he does as a humanitarian, so it would definitely be meaningful to him.

But love the different perspectives about what "meaningful" would mean to you!

Fantastic!

Well done, and well thought out.
It is truly the sentiment that matters.

DITTO!

I have to admit that I was a bit ??? at first, but your last post nailed it for me, eph1!

for a second there, i thought u were talking about the raconteurs song "steady as SHE goes" - i was mistaken.
my FI loves that song, it''s on our song list!

i also love ben folds!!! "the luckiest" is one of my favoritest songs on that album

Glad I could clarify my thought process a bit!

I'm still not totally sold on the idea, which is why I like hearing everyone's opinions. And the song itself is beautiful, but it's the lyrics that truly speak to me... I love that it captures the idea of traveling through the ups and downs of life together, rather than just singing about all the sunshine and roses of new love.

I wasn't even sure we were going to do engraved bands until my fiance mentioned that he already knew what he wanted to write in mine, and he's keeping it a secret. So then my own wheels started turning! I am a huge poetry fan, but he has loved and followed Dave Matthews for about 12 years now (he's been to at least 30-40 concerts), so it seems like lyrics from a DMB song would be more poignant for him than verses from a poem I would otherwise choose. Hmmmm....... lots to think about........

What a lovely song.
I can't help but date myself when I think isn't "Steady as we go" something Captain Kirk would say...
