Well, Mr. Basil and I are finally married. We really couldn''t have asked for a more perfect day! Every other weekend in September, it rained or stormed in RI, but our weather was perfect - sunny and high in the low 70s with a mild breeze.
We had our rehearsal dinner Friday night, and afterwards Mr. Basil and I said our goodbyes and he headed off to the hotel. My bridesmaids came over to my parents'' house Saturday morning and we had hair and makeup and munched on croissants and wraps all morning. I was pacing the whole time and couldn''t sit still. We finished up around 1 pm which was an hour earlier than expected, and we couldn''t leave for the reception place to get ready until 2 pm.
So I paced.
Finally we loaded all the dresses in the car and drove off to the reception. It was amazing seeing all the people setting up everything and thinking - oh my god, this is all for us! I headed up to the dressing room and the photographer came up and took some shots of my dress and accessories. The bridesmaids and my mom got dresses and I waited. And waited. The photographer wanted to take the guys'' shots before the ceremony, so she told me to wait until they arrived and were finished. They were supposed to get there at 3. At 3:15 I called my dad, who was picking up Mr. Basil at the yacht club across the harbor (this becomes important later). Still no Mr. Basil.
So I called Mr. Basil, and he and his best man were lost. I tried as best as I could to give directions without freaking out. Apparently, they arrived around 3:30.
But there was just a small problem. Mr. Basil''s best man had brought a bowtie that he had no clue how to tie. Even though Mr. Basil had tied his own bowtie, for whatever reason no one could figure out best man''s tie. The DOC came up and I gave her a printed out sheet of "how to tie a bowtie" that I had brought in case Mr. Basil forgot, but apparently it still didn''t help. At one point, the DOC, 2 photographers, and 2 reception coordinators were trying to tie the stupid tie! Finally, someone came up with the bright idea for the best man to borrow one of the waiter''s ties and the problem was solved.
In the meantime, I am still stuck up in the dressing room waiting and waiting, since I can''t even begin getting dressed until the photographer gets there.
Looking out the window, I can see that the photographers are done taking photos of the guys, so I start setting things out, but 15 min later, no photographer. I dispatch my dad to go find her. He comes back and says she is taking photos of the reception room and that I have plenty of time to get dressed...but it''s 4:30 by this time and though I know it will only take 5 minutes to put my dress on, I''m starting to freak a little.
Finally at 4:40, the photographer comes up and I can finally get dressed. Of course, I finish at 4:50 and at that point, I''m glad that I only have 10 minutes and not 2 hours to wait around in my dress. Smart photographer. She warns me at that point that the ceremony never starts on time and I should sit down and relax. Smart photographer.
Around then, my brother (groomsman) comes in the room. He says "where''s dad?" None of us have seen him in a while and he grabs my mom''s cell phone to call him since no one can find him. He leaves the room and comes back a second later and says everything is fine and dad is located, but won''t tell us where dad is. I make a joke about my dad running off to check his email on his iPhone 5 minutes before the ceremony and didn''t think much of it.
So just a few minutes late, we get the word to line up and file downstairs. The aisle in the garden was seemingly miles long, so they led the bridal party halfway out and left me in the building with my dad. I looked out at the garden and tried to enjoy the moment.
Dad: So remember how your aunt was telling you how you had to have something going wrong at your wedding because that would be the thing you''d remember the best? Well, you and Mr. Basil have a story now.
Me: What?
Dad: Don''t worry, it has a happy ending.
Me: What?
Dad: I''ll tell you later. It turned out fine.
Me: What?
Dad: Later
Me: No, really, what happened?
Dad: Well, when Mr. Basil was taking his coat out of the car back at the yacht club, the rings fell out of his pocket. He didn''t realize they were missing until 4:45 when he went to give them to the best man. We had to drive back over there and we found his in the grass but it took us a while to find yours. Mr. Basil wanted to leave cause it was 5 pm and he was going to be late, and at that moment best man found it underneath the car.
I think I laughed the whole way going down the aisle. We really do have a story now - how my husband lost the rings 15 minutes before the ceremony! Poor Mr. Basil didn''t think it was all that funny at the time, but now he thinks it''s a sign of luck that they actually found a sort of needle in a haystack.
Anyway, we got married and took pictures in my uncle''s pink car and and everyone ate and drank and had a great time. The coolest thing was seeing all my friends from different parts of my life hanging out together and having fun together. My dad made the most touching speech ever. The photobooth was a huge hit - people came up to me all night saying "this is the coolest idea ever!" People danced and talked and ate food and cake and homemade beer. We were sad to see it end, but exhausted at the same time.
Well, I guess I should get to what you''re all waiting to see - the pictures! I''m still waiting for the pro pics, but these are some that I''ve gotten off facebook and by email. Enjoy!
