Matching earring pairs for future project

Hi everyone, I am daydreaming about my next project and I’ve decided I want a pair of earrings with strong fluorescence. I don’t need ACA levels of perfection.. GIA triple ex with an excellent HCA score is enough for me.

I would really like strong fluorescence for the novelty factor and also to keep costs down.

Has anyone purchased singular diamonds to make earrings at different times? Is it very hard to find a matching pair that way?

You can absolutely buy a single diamond now and match another diamond at a future date. I wouldn't say its very difficult to get a matching pair but could take some time to get a close match. What is your budget and diamond specs you are looking at?

Taking some time is ok, I just definitely want fluorescence! I would like over 1 carat per ear. Not sure the budget yet. Maybe an eye clean I color

I think how difficult it'll be to find a matching pair this way will depend on how picky you are with specs. Like, finding two 6.8mm near colorless, eye clean stones under $X shouldn't be too difficult. But once you start adding wants like OEC, same color grade, etc., then you may start to get boxed in with available options.

Is there particular reason you'd wanna source the stones at different times?

What size stones are you looking for?

To keep costs down, and also because I want fluorescence and I’m not sure if “matching pairs” will match by fluorescence

Makes sense.

Lots of folks find matches for single diamonds they've taken from pendants or e-rings and then repurpose them into stud earrings or sidestones. Seems to me like it'd be a similar principle. So I think your way is totally doable!

Hoping for above 1ct each ear

We need to know a budget in order to help you find a diamond, what clarity ? You mentioned eye clean “ I “ color and Fluorescence over 1 carat ....we need more specifics to help you.

Sorry I was actually thinking of this for a future project and just wondering if buying tH3 diamonds one by one was okay or not. My wallet needs a break :(sad

It's okay to buy them one at a time IF you choose a very common size where there is a huge stone selection. One carat to 1.05 cts is a very safe zone, for example. Wanting to match size, cut, color, and fluorescence will make it difficult, but as long as you stick with a common size, it is possible. If you choose something odd like a 1.34, there'll be fewer matching options. There is not as much of a discount for fluorescence when you go down to I color, though. There is more of a discount on colorless diamonds with fluorescence. The only other qualm I'd have with this idea is that you may end up having to buy from two different vendors making it extremely difficult to upgrade later. I've upgraded about 3 times and would love to do it once more, but I am trying to be satisfied with what I have. But I will tell you, DSS does happen with studs. That's why a lot of us do go with Whiteflash because of the ease of upgrading and retaining full value on the stones being traded in.

Yes, DSS happens with studs! Definitely! So I'd want to make sure there is a decent upgrade policy with whatever vendor you select.

But I think your idea is definitely doable. Especially if you are not in a rush.

I just matched two diamonds from two different super ideal vendors that are an odd size. (Though I wouldn't recommend you go for a weird size, I only did because I was comfortable ordering a custom cut if I couldn't find a mate.) But I got lucky and found a match both in terms of size and in terms of "flavor" or character of the cut. (Diamonds from different vendors can have slightly different visual qualities.) I haven't posted the the pair yet as I'm still paying off the second diamond.

And as with all matching pairs, remember to compare mm spread, not just carat weight! Its the mm spread that counts in terms of whether or not they match size-wise!

Oh dear I didn’t think about DSS!
What sizes did you go through for your upgrades?
