We were married 10 days ago in upstate NY. It was wonderful. I have very few photos so far, but will try to post some. Our wedding was a Pagan/Jewish ceremony that we wrote ourselves (copying liberally from a ton of sources) that a friend officiated. I think of all the elements, it is what we have gotten the most compliments on and I can honestly say I'm so happy with how it came out and am relieved I don't feel like we "missed" anything, despite it being under 20min in length.
A good friend of ours played the violin for all of our ceremony music. It was a mix of classical/traditional Irish music. Her playing was also a surprise a year in the making for my husband (they've known one another since junior high). When I walked down the aisle I first saw this sea of faces. One of my favorite moments is then looking forward and seeing her out on her own happily playing for us. It was such a grounding moment before my father and I turned, to walk in the direction of my husband and the rest of the bridal party.
My cousin is an accomplished Irish step dancer, she changed into her costume and performed a dance she choreographed just for us during the desert hour-It was wonderful to get to see her dance, as the family rarely gets the opportunity to do so, and so great that she was willing to do it for us.
The reception-the food was wonderful. Despite all the advise and emphasis on eating it was really difficult to eat. I was just too excited and busy that I kept grabbing mouthfuls, but feeling like I didn't have an appetite.
Clothes-Under the advise of my bm's at the last minute I chose not to wear my spanx, in retrospect I wish I had. The dress was fitted, and so became hot quickly and I feel like I wouldn't have felt like I was sticking to the lining as much as I was if I had that layer between.
Funny story-we rehearsed a first dance routine over the course of 2 private lessons 2 weeks before the wedding-it was a foxtrot, which is 100% dependent on the woman stepping backwards. I thought this wouldn't be an issue, but we got onto the dance floor, and the first step backwards I was stuck. So through a smile I whispered to my husband "I can't step backwards!" to which he responded "what do I do?" "Let me walk forward!"-eh, at least we can laugh about it.
Hair-There were some bumpy starts, but in the end I think she did a fantastic job. My hair took a total of 3 hours to get up and about 45min to get down at the end of the night.
The Band-Oiy! All the things that went wrong were really hard to predict and there wasn't a lot save for a little more planning on our end that could have corrected it. The music they played was well done, but their sets didn't make sense flow wise in terms of tempo and types of music. There ability to MC was negligible. Including specifically doing the opposite of things we had requested. For instance-I filled out a form saying "no I do not want the bridal party to be asked to join us during our first dance" and midway through they were-which to their credit, they gamely stepped in and awkwardly danced bridesmaid to groomsman. Which was also a 2min song, which when you are dancing is pretty short.
Also, my extended family is quite large, and there were a number of father/daughter pairings available from 6 months and up so I thought it would be nice to invite the father/daughters onto the floor half way through that dance-it didn't happen. AND that was a long song 4+min
The last hour-the band fell into a groove of great dance songs one after the other and people were finally fully dancing full out-of course this started right after we sent the photographer home since there was no way to predict that last hour would be any different than the rest.
Bridesmaid dresses: They all picked their own, I'm happy how this worked out.
