So finally we have quote for 4mm white gold ring.

My fiance wants to go with platinum and I kind of want of 14k gold. I mean she is spending the money but I want to save some $. Any thoughts?

It will have ACA meles 0.45 tcw.

What do you guys think of pricing?

@sledge any thoughts?

“A Cut Above” melee? Why not just buy directly from whiteflash? Did you pick your finance’s ring? Or did she have free reign?

@ringo865
Whiteflash is making our ring with aca melee. The band pic above is just an example of what whiteflash will be making for us.

For her ring: I did the research on pricescope with help of ps community and we both made a decision on ring together.

Men’s rings are surprisingly expensive because our fingers are generally bigger which means a larger diameter and most men’s bands are 6mm+ in width. Precious metals are expensive and we have more weight in our rings because of pure physics.

For me, I would go platinum all day long. I like the way it patinas and also I like the extra weight/heft of platinum. And if the prices above are accurate I would gladly pay $400 to avoid white gold.

But to understand white gold, means to also get a little education. It starts with karats. Pure gold is 24k. So 14k gold for instance is simply 14/24, or 58.333% gold. The other 41.667% is “fillers” and it varies between vendors exactly what they use.

While 24k may sound more pure, gold is very soft so it makes a poor candidate for jewlery pieces like rings. Those fillers are used to change color (white, rose, green, etc) and also add strength. Nickel, zinc, silver and copper are common fillers. Many people are allergic to nickel which can present a problem. Also nickel requires rhodium plating which is a super thin (and uneven) coating. Depending on a persons body chemicals, this plating will eventually deteriorate requiring replating every so often. I might add if you do have an allergy to nickel the rhodium plating does not offer a protective barrier like it may sound because it’s so thin and rarely perfectly even.

Since the alloy mix can vary from vendor to vendor, it is wise to ask them their particular mix so you aren’t disappointed later. Also depending on the exact fillers and ratios of each of those metals used, it can affect color/shade a bit even if it’s considered “white”.

My wife’s ring is a WG/palladium mix which IMO is the best WG option. It has properties similar to platinum but is lighter. It’s a pure white metal that avoids allergy situations and does not require rhodium plating. My wife was insistent on the “shiny” of WG. I tried my best to persuade her to platinum but she didn’t like it. So we ended up where we did. However, it was barely cheaper than platinum by $100 or so the best I recall.

I might add, I have big fingers….12.5.

I really toyed with the idea of a band with a super ideal because I learned I loved diamonds when searching for my wife. Ultimately I decided on a simple band until I was willing to go all out on myself later.

I am not a fan of gold at all, particularly yellow. So only a white metal would work. I was more open minded to alternatives such as titanium, tungsten, cobalt chrome, etc.

Loved the idea of titanium, once you get past the horror stories of yesteryear about needing a special set of cutters at the hospital if they had to cut a titanium ring off due to some weird incident. My rub was it was crazy light and I wanted more heft.

Tungsten felt great and had the heft/weight I liked with platinum. Stupid cheap in comparison. Hard to find anyone that will do custom tungsten but there are a few select folks.

Ultimately I chose a cobalt chrome ring from Benchmark. Wish it had a little more heft but it was probably 2nd best to the tungsten or platinum. But I found in a 9.5mm width. That may sound big but with 12.5 it looks about right. I also tried a 7.5mm and it wasn’t bad but I wanted a little more. So the 9.5mm has worked well for me. Also I prefer the Euro squarish band to US round bands.

I bought from IDJ for dirt cheap. Figured it would serve the purpose until I could find a design I really liked and could shove me a super ideal in there or possibly an OEC cushion (love chunky facets). That’s later down the road although I have been eyeballing some options lately.

Their increase in price to go platinum is much cheaper than most other jewelers, from what I've seen.

Yes, it's more money regardless, but if this is to be your daily driver for years and years to come, then I think their small premium for platinum would be well worth this particular price of admission.

Speaking of metals that are more stout:

Here's my cheap-o $17 tungsten ring that I bought off a seller on eBay back in June of 2007.

Admittedly, I do not take care of it and it hardly ever leaves my finger, even through activities (most of them daily) such as sleeping, showering, career work, yard work, playing catch with the kids, horsing around with the dogs, vehicle maintenance in the driveway, etc. Given all that, I think it has held up amazingly well.

There's always a positive for spending the little extra for a heartier metal/material.

Just took these here in my computer repair lab at work:

Hopefully this gives you a little food for thought to consider the small price jump to platinum.
Alas, your wallet, your finger, your choice. If it's not your preference or choice, then get what you desire and more power to you!

It really depends on the patina colour that you like...

With 14k and 18k WG, it will go a buttery yellowish colour. You can have it rhodium plated to make it look like the white gold as the day you receive it.

Platinum- the patina is more silvery/ grey.

i have both metals, and it really depends on the the piece that will determine what colour metal i choose.

For me, as a ring, i like vintage/ the aged look and i will buck the trend, and say go 14k white gold.

I have 18k white gold rings and a cuff that is also 18k WG.... and i cant wait for them to patina more than what they are!!!!

I have a platinum setting for my pendant. And it holds a FVOY diamond. and the platinum makes that yellow diamond pop!

With the ring that you have shown with the ACA melee (a modern cut), and the design of the ring is more contemporary than vintage, i would choose the platinum metal.

And, i am also assuming that you have worn diamonds in a ring before? Some men love it, some don't, and some grow to love it. :-)

I believe some films have done unplated or non coated white gold and have been very happy with it. I just searched and couldn’t find the threads, but that is an option. As @gregchang35 said, it’s a warmer but still white gold color. Very nice alternative. You could as WF if that’s an option.

In regards to choosing different metals and the color effects, you may find this thread useful that I created when I was a newbie and designing my wife's setting.

Also I am sharing a few quotes of my own that shows some color variances for you. And a video of my wife's ring to show the WG/palladium they use.

Thank you for the link @JDDN. It's very helpful to see the metals. I do see the difference in colors that you mentioned. I put these together to help me see the differences side by side.

To me, it appears the Plat900/Iridium combo provides a more white shiny and comes with some of the benefits others have mentioned. I do have to assume the pictures below is skewed in the fact I believe the palladium WG that DK provides is plated and I assume the plating would make it more shiny like the regular WG, plated picture.

2 = WG, rhodium plated
3 = Palladium WG, not plated
A = Plat900/Iridium

One more comparison.

2 = WG, rhodium plated
B = Plat950/ruthenium

Here's how they look on my hand. Each band was 2mm. so I wore 2 to make it 4mm and 3 to make it 6mm.

My finger size is 9.

Initially I liked idea of 6mm but I work as a nurse and want to wear ring all the time so choosing 4mm.

Also we decided on platinum ring. Thanks you all. :)

I dont think you are getting a good reading from those blue bands. The two bands you have on looks like more than 4mm to me
and the 3 bands looks way more than 6mm.

Edit...you really need to find a real 4mm and 6mm band and try them on before you have it made. It could be a big mistake that could
be prevented if you are wrong.

EDIT...yes again :) . I have those blue bands (they are pretty common). They are measuring about 3mm a piece to me but I don't have
a caliper.

Agree with @ty333.

To put into perspective:

I have size 9 finger. The total width is 9mm.
It is 18kWG.

It is kitchen lighting, so a little warmer light and therefore reflecting a little more “buttery yellow” than usual from the top.

Thank you guys. I will go to the store to try some 4mm bands.

Here's pic or band I tried in the past. It was either 7 or 8mmScreenshot_20210604-213021_Gallery.jpg

That size looks quite proportionate. But the key is that you have to be comfortable with it. Make sure you have a comfort for, so the edges of the ring doesn’t bother you on the finger side, a lot.

My 9mm band, was my first diamond ring. It was comfort fit and it felt right.

one thing to consider when you have diamonds on one part of the band. The way this is designed, the ring will spin a little. As such the diamonds will be in full view or partial view. It may or may not irritate you that you have to spin the rings around so that the diamond show at the top.

bring a nurse, you will need to be careful of what rings you wear when treating patients.

every work place has its own guidelines.

Glad @gregchang35 was able to jump in and share his experience since he has the exact same size ring finger.

Here are a couple of pics of a 7.5 and 9mm band on my larger hands, when I was trying to decide which width I liked best.

Looking at the pictures that have been shared, it appears to me that segment of my finger is longer than either of yours so these widths look considerably different on me than either of you.
