Hey,
I was wondering what the going price for a 2ish CT Round Blue Mogok Spinel ?

I think that if it's a 2.1ct stone from the 'bay, it has a lot of gray in it. And the "cobalt" in the description is very very very misleading. How much is it worth? Good question. My 2.74ct blue spinel from Barry Bridgestock was $500ish and has far less gray, and a lot more precision faceting.

And to give a real, albeit annoying, answer: it's worth what someone will pay for it.

It's a cornflower blue spinel the color is gorgeous. I can't seem to attach a picture. No gray to be seen just a beautiful blue. I'm thinking about buying a stone online and don't know what an acceptable price is and am afraid that there maybe something nefarious going on, but i have no idea.

Rtols, just wondering if you are aware you are showing up as a person in the trade?

To even begin to judge price, pictures would usually be most helpful.

Your question has too many variables:
1. Is it untreated or has it been treated? This is an important price setter.
2. Does it come with a lab memo? Another important matter if the stone is advertised as untreated or non diffused.
3. Is it eye clean?
4. Cornflower to one person may be grayish blue to another. Please attach a picture of the said stone if you can. Again, this is a huge price setter.
5. How is the cutting? Does it have extinction, zoning, window or any other issues?

Why do you think that there's something "nefarious" going on? Do you suspect a synthetic? If it is a fine blue spinel, expect to pay a few grand per carat.

Argh! I thought the OP was looking at a Mogok blue sapphire and not a spinel so a few things do not apply, such as treatment. DUH! If the colour is that great, as you say, the stone should be accompanied by a reputable lab memo proving that the spinel is indeed a natural blue spinel and not a synthetic. Almost all synthetic blue spinels have that unreal cobalt or cornflower blue colour that is almost devoid of the gray modifier.

I am sorry to say the colour is the furthest thing from being a conflower blue. The spinel is inky black with a lot of gray, extinct and slightly windowed. The $99 price is in line with the poor quality.

I have to agree with Chrono, and I'll go a bit further by saying you can actually win stones of that color from some vendors for $10. It's very typical of a very dark grey spinel. There are zillions like that being sold on ebay, so do not pay attention to metaphors (ie: kashmir color, cobalt blue color, etc. . . ).

In this case, what is your definition of a rip off? Yes, it is probably a real umbalite but is exceedingly dark and quite extinct too. In my opinion, it is priced too high for the poor quality.

Thanks Chrono I had a bad feeling about that seller originally. I'm glad I asked

Both of those stones look really dark... :blackeye:

way dark
there was a recent posting about cornflower with fab pics of cornflowers and stones. a search for cornflower should bring it up
