Hi all,
Have just commissioned Sally from Heart of water to make me a Mothers ring, my son's birthday is January and my daughter's is in April, so garnet and diamond. I am currently upgrading my solitaire engagement ring so am using my original diamond from this (round 4.5mm) and a garnet of same size, I'm thinking rhodolite or mint green (Sally is going to source this for me ;) ). Going to have a rope band with the two stones twisted on top in 18ct gold. Don't know wether to go for prong or Bezel setting, what do you think? Sally is going to send me on some sketches so will post when I receive them. Really love Sally's style so can't wait. This is also the very first thing I've ever commissioned and it's all thanks to finding ps, so a huge thanks :D

Hi sounds fun! If you plan to wear it everyday I would go for the bezel. I love the diamond and green garnet combination. Good luck =)

I"m sure it will be beautiful! And I love the idea of a rhodolite or mint green garnet!!!! Both are beautiful! Are you leaning more towards one at all?

Thanks Quennoo and SB,
Quennoo, it is going to be a RH ring, and prob not worn every day. Sally asked me if I wanted prongs or bezel, hadn't even considered bezel but think it could be nice. SB, love both rhodolite and mint green as a colour, not sure what to go for, although green is my son's favourite colour so might be nice going for the mint green. I'm really looking forward to getting Sally's sketches

That sounds really gorgeous, i can't wait to see the mint green option!

I'm currently planning my next project which is similar. I want to make my mum a mother's bracelet with both mine and my sister's birthstones and also her own. Have wanted to do it for ages but my sister had to be difficult and be born in April, and i didn't know how I'd afford diamonds and was worried the bracelet would be all about the diamond seeing as I'm garnet and my mum's topaz. But now i know so much more about gems i realise i can afford a DBTY style with little bezels. I'm just not sure what colour scheme to go with.

Anyway, don't want to derail your thread. Will you post pics of the colours you're going with? I love Sally's work.

Is she going to find both then have you pick one? I think the stone will "tell" you if it wants prongs or a bezel.

She has some rhodolite at moment so she is sending me pictures of that and will source mint green if not going for the rhodolite. Thanks for advice on setting, will see the stone and then decide.
NexivRed, your Mothers bracelet idea is fab, that might be my next project, a family bracelet with all our birthstones, that is a lovely idea!!! Ha I know what you mean about April, my little Diva was the same :twirl: I am currently upgrading my engagement ring for my anniversary, and originally was going to incorporate my diamond into the new engagement ring but decided this is a nicer idea, and then I also get 2 new rings instead of 1 :naughty:

Well have decided to go with the Rhodolite. Sally has had one cut to size for me and is sending on pics tomorrow to see if I like it. So exciting. The question now is do I go for yellow or rose gold? What do ye think?

Can't wait to see how it turns out. I would ask for pics with the stones and both metals.

Thanks pregcurious, that's a great idea. Why didn't I think of that :rodent:  Will ask Sally to send on pics.

Definitely!

Well sent Sally an email asking for pics with both metals so thanks for that tip :) .
In the meantime, while waiting on photo's would love some input on design. I am now wondering if I should have the two stones set beside each other, one on top of the other or diagonally. While I was googling pics I came across the 'moi et toi' style. I really like this idea as translates to you and me which I think is lovely for a mothers ring. I have attached some images as a starting point but any advice or ideas greatly appreciated. I think I am leaning towards one on top of other with some detail or filigree in between.
Thanks again,
Scarlett

If the stones are larger and you don't have a lot of finger real estate, then diagonally might be suitable.
If the stones are smaller and you have long fingers, stacking up vertically makes the ring look bigger (better coverage).

Thanks Chrono,
The stones are small at 4.5mm round each. Now my hands are very square with small finger length so trying to picture one on top of other, slightly diagonal might suit my hand shape better, not really sure. But my hands are definately not dainty or delicate :twirl:

Sally sent on a pic with my original ering which she is going to unset, the rhodolite and some rose and yellow gold. What do ye think?

Oohhh, beautiful. I would go with the 5th design down and have it in rose gold myself. But then I am crazy about rose gold! However, is the garnet red or does it have a purplish/pinkish hint to it? Because if it does I think it would suit the rose gold quite well.

The thing I like about the 5th design down is the design almost make it seems as though the two gems are being cradled or hugged :))

Hi Nexiv,
Thanks for your advice :) Yes the garnet has a slight purplish hue, Sally said not as dark irl. I too thought I would def go for the rose gold, love it too, well I love all gold  but I am drawn more to the yellow I think. Sally is working on design ideas now, so exciting :appl:

I'd do this design in yellow gold. Are you keeping the 8 prongs? I think it might be a bit overpowering for a 4.5 mm stone and will consider reducing it to either 6 or 4 prongs.

Thanks Chrono. No def won't be doing 8 prong. My current ering has 4 and think that suited the small stone.

Well Sally has come up with a beautiful design for my ring. Not quite one on top of the other, slightly diagonal with side petal detail. She is also going to put a hot pink sapphire into my old setting so effectively 2 new rings :appl: Just have to play the waiting game now :twirl:
ETA decided to go for yellow gold :appl:

I can't wait to see it! Any chance you can post Sally's design here? The suspense!!

It sounds beautiful; any example pictures?

Sally sent me a few rough sketches based on what I told her. Here is a pic of original sketch. I loved the look of it so told her to go for it. I hope it's ok to post it  I think it's going to look beautiful. Going for 18kt yellow gold and the shank will be a 1.8mm rope band.

Looks like it will be very pretty -- I love the rope shank. Is the bezel rope also, can't tell from the drawing? Looking forward to pics when it's done!

Hi Laurie
The design I'm going for is the one in the middle, with sort of petal detail, the rope bezel was another idea Sally showed me, but decided to go for this one.
