I bought the Motorala Razor phone in Hong Kong - and find it does not work properly in Australia.
The reception drops out very often.

Motorla service agent has been acting rather strangely about it - First says there is no international warranty, then when I said you must be joking on a well known brand????
Rep then said there is on the hard ware - but not the software. Your problem is software and you must return it to HK for fixing!!!!

I have spoken to a few other people who also find the reception is poor.

I work in an IT dept, the person here who handles cell phones for the company said that she most of the people who got the new razors phones were having problems. Apparently, there is manufacturing defect. In fact, our company has been advised not to purchase these phones going forward because of this. I don''t know the specifics, but just though I''d comment.

Ugh. I''ve had nothing but trouble with Motorola phones... Finally made a stink to Cingular about it, and they let me switch for a different brand.

Hope you figure something out for your Razor. Those phones are pricey!

There was an article recently about defects with the Motorola Razr phones...lemme see if I can dig it up.

I have one and haven''t had any problems with it as of yet...hope my streak lasts~

Gary,

Virtually everyone I know, starting with myself, has a RAZR and we have nothing but great things to say about it. Did you buy it new? Who do you have service through? Were you with them prior to the RAZR or did you sign a new contract with a new provider once you bought the phone? I guess I''m wondering if it could be the service.

I, too, have recently read the CNN article re: mfg. defect. Most cellular providers in the US have stopped selling it briefly while the issues were addressed/resolved, but I believe the phone is now back on the market.

Gary- that sucks about your phone. Nothing is more frustrating than mobile phone issues. We've all come to rely so heavily on them!

What a timely post. FI and I were considering renewing our Verizon plans for 2 years to get the great deal on the Razr. I think you can get 2 phones for something like $100?? Anyway, it's good to hear pros and cons about the phone. I wonder if these problems are happening with all carriers across the board, or if it limited to just one?

I currently have a Motorola (V-something), and had to switch it out 2 months ago (it was about 8 months old), 'cause the screen kept going blank. But so far, so good! Before that I had an older Motorola that worked great.

Argh, Motorola phones in general are horrific IMO. They have weak cell reception and the battery life is ridiculous. I have a Nokia while my FI has a Motorola (both with Cingular), and no matter where we are, I always have great reception, while his phone often has none. We had Cingular replace the phone once because we thought it was defective, but no, still the same thing. My friend has the Razr and has the same issues. No more Motorolas for us.

Thanks everyone - especially you FireGoddess.

Hey - I will write to Motorola and complain.

The thing that really rankles me is the local service agent must have known what the problem was - but looked me in the eye when I asked if others reported a problem

"oh no Sir, not that I am aware of"

Stuff their brand !!!

The shares should fall more than 2%

Charger I have had my Razr for a little over 4 months now, no problems. I know a few of my friends with Cingular had their Razrs recalled, but the Verizion ones all appear to be fine, as 3 people in my family have them (Bluetooth for the cars and hands free laws where we live). I love the phone and it works perfectly for me.

Crazy coincidence. I just came across this thread; earlier today my woman and I renewed with Verizon and got 2 Razrs. They are $100 after mail-in rebate, but they charge tax on both phones, and the 2nd phone MSRP is around $400-500. We got out of there with 2 phones, 1 case, 1 car charger and 1 blue-tooth headset for ~$150 after rebate. I lost my other phone, and we waited until our 2 years was up so we could renew with discounts. I don''t really care for the Razr personally, but there''s not much middle ground in what they offer. Either too thin or too bulky. It''s easier to hold when wrapped in a case though. Lots of really nice features, but we''ll be missing out on most of them because they cost extra.

Good luck getting it resolved Garry. Let us know if they stand up for you.

Thans you guys - you are great!!!

I called the service people again and tlod them I have read several news reports about the problem they were having.

Well - you think that did''nt change things

They have a ''new policy'' and will make a special dispensation, but with no extentinsions to existing warranty blah blah blah.....

So thanks FG for the link to the article :-)

Timely post. I''m in the process of looking around for a new phone & have talked to several Razr happy people. I love the thin design & the buttons are big enough to actually see them with my aging farsighted eyes!

I''m look at mostly motorola phones as I have had my Star TAC for as long as I can remember I''m thinking 10 years. The reason I am going to replace it is because I look like a dynosaur. Reason I waited so long - I CAN NOT KILL THIS PHONE! It''s been left out in the rain. Dropped a flight of stairs - you name it - it''s done it & survived.

So, the issues have been resolved with the phone?

You''re welcome Garry - glad to help. Hope the new phone works better for you!!!

I was able to get a Razr yay for Verizon and early upgrade! So far no problems..I really like it.

I''ve had my Razr for about a year and a half, and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn''t buy this phone. The battery life is abysmally low, and now the battery dies after two days of hardly talking on it. I guess I need a new battery, but I''ll buy a new phone first. I haven''t had much luck with Motorola phones; Nokia ones seem to be so much more reliable to me.

Age and use will impact the lifecycle of any rechargeable. Also, the balance of talk time vs. stand-by time is crucial. A new Razr has a talk time of 3 hours and a stand-by time of 200 hours, which is completely amazing to me, considering how thin it is. Motorola has designed some VERY thrifty circuits. Juice can be proportioned out any way you want...90 minutes talk + 100 hours stand-by, 2 hours talk + 67 minutes stand-by, etc. Some tips on maximizing battery life:
http://is.med.ohio-state.edu/policies/battery.htm The Razr has a lithium ion battery.
I'm loving the bluetooth earpiece. Voice activated dialing is very handy--when it works.
