I just toured the street of Diamonds, and I spoke with a merchant who told me about a setting called a mushroom setting.

He literally had been making them, and they ALL sold out. He said it''s like having less metal and the diamond looks like it is floating on your finger?

If I call him tomorrow, he is getting one back from the setter, so I will hopefully see it, but he says they sell out like mad.

Does anyone know what this is, what it looks like, etc?

Gee... I don't know, but something fitting the description showed around here: basically the center stone is set like the pieces would in a "invisible setting" - the diamond is sunk 1/3-1/2 in the band and this is all you see. It makes me nervous only to look at that naked girdle

The technical solution appeared in some collection of semiprecious jewelry using randomly faceted moonstone (below), lapis and peridot last year (or maybe 2002?) and this was the latest extension I know of...

These are the things ("Nudo" rings by Pomellato)... noe the diamond (and sapphire) rings in question give the same treatment to small (up to 5mm diameter) round cuts using a tiny bezel wraping the culet (like an icecream cone) hanging onto a groove carved into the stone. The same principle applies in the same is done directly into a thicher band...

Again, not sure this is the same you heard of, but it sounds just as crazy !
