So I am coming out of perpetual lurkedom. I’ve only posted once before, but received incredibly helpful responses. This post should probably be in Family, Home, and Health but there is way more traffic here and it is related to imy mpending proposal.

My boyfriend and I have picked out and ordered a ring!!!

This of course got me thinking about how I’d really like to have my teeth whitened, just a bit. (I know this is very superficial, but all the cool kids are doing it!

) I am also really in need of a serious cleaning and family dentist (who maybe I haven''t seen in a few... years out of sheer laziness) will take 3 months to get a cleaning appointment, in the middle of a workday.

Long story short: I am in desperate need of a good dentist. I live in the San Gabriel Valley Area of the Greater Los Angeles Area. I am not too far from Pasadena.

I would really prefer if a dentist is available on weekends or open until at least 6pm so I can minimize work time missed. I don''t necessarily need a cosmetic dentist, just someone gentle, honest, skilled, and nice. Not too concerned about cost. I''ve tried several popular listing websites that feature ratings but it’s very hard to tell if someone is actually good because many dentists have just 1 or no reviews. I decided to try posting here since you ladies (and gentlemen) seem to have an answer to just about everything.

And while I am at it, does anyone know a good hair colorist/stylist in the area? I can''t have him propose to me while I have 2 inches (eeek

) of roots. (Tax refund is on the way so I''m pretty open on cost).

(I should add that my boyfriend couldn''t care less about teeth whitening or highlights, but I do!)

Thank you for taking the time to read my post!!

Wish I could help you but I live in NY. I have been going to the same dentist for awhile and I found him through a friend. Ask people you know OR visit a place like Gentle Dental...do they have those in Cali? They do here. I hear they are really good and can usually accommodate immediate appointments, maybe even walk-ins.

As for your hair, go online and find places with great reviews. There are plenty of places you can look but generally yahoo reviews is something I check out a lot--seems New Yorkers like to review things LOL.

Good luck and Congratulations on your impending engagement!!!!

Sorry I can't be of much help here but you really should try and post this over in the health area and Bride World Wide. Both of those threads see a fair amount of traffic and many of the ladies over there (who do not frequent the LIW thread) are incredibly helpful.

ETA: www.yelp.com is also a good resource for reviews.

No specific help, as I''m not in your area, but my dentist is open till 7pm two nights a week, but those appointments fill up so fast, it would probably be more than 3 months away that you could get one. If you want to get in to a good dentist soon, you might have to suck it up and take a crappy time.

For the whitening, my dentist actually recommended that we try the whitestrips first(I''d look online for reviews on which brand is best) as they are much cheaper and tend to be fairly effective (but the toothpastes and things are pretty worthless). If that doesn''t work, then try the more expensive, professional methods.

IS it 1800 DENTIST that does recommendations in your area? Try them.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful and caring responses! I was definitely look into these great suggestions, and am so appreciative of the time everyone took to answer my post!

Bia- Thank you for the congratulations!! I tried asking friends but most are away at college and had pediatric dentists before moving, lol. (I am the townie taking my time at the community college but I took two years off to live and snowboard in Tahoe)My boss had a good recommendation, which my boyfriend went to and liked, but again that dentist is only open 8-5.

KeepingtheFaith21- I will post this on those boards based on your recommendation though I do worry it’s really a bit of an uninteresting, dumb post...sorry if I bored you guys!!

Laine- That''s a good point about the night appointments, maybe I should just try a highly recommended dentist with standard hours, bite the bullet and take the first available? I tried the white strips but my teeth are very sensitive and I find them uncomfortable and I did not notice a big change (but my compliance was poor because they hurt my teeth).

Sunnyd- Have you used 1-800-dentist? Lol, I remember those commercials! I was wondering how they screened their candidates, or if dentists just paid to be on their list?

I wish I could help you I actually lived in the LA area for 5 years but I can''t for the life of me remember the name of the dentist I used and now that I think about it he wasn''t all that gentle. Good, but gentle was never a concern for me I just wanted it done right. I''ll ask a few of my LA area friends if they can recommend anyone.

I''m not sure if you are wiling to commute a bit but I used to work for a dentist in Encino in the San Fernando Valley! He really is a great dentist and has very competitive prices! Let me know if you would like his info!

Oh and he also offers Zoom whitening as well as Take home whitening!!!!
