Hi All,

First I want to thank TL and Vapid for recommending Jerry Newman to recut my demantoid garnet. What an amazing fellow. It took less than one week from my house to his house, back to my house. At first I thought he must not want to work on the stone and so just sent it right back to me. Plus I hadn''t paid for anything yet.

I opened the package and there it was without the window. Just think, he cut and polished 24 new facets without changing the original dimensions of the stone. It was 2.94 and now is 2.67. Isn''t that great? I can''t believe people can work on something that small. So, in effect he did not do a complete recut but only a partial. And, he charged me accordingly. I couldn''t believe it. This is one honest man.

I feel better about buying stones now that I know if I get a wndowed stone, I can call upon Jerry Newman, master cutter, super hero, to come to the rescue. Now ths is a national resource that we need.

As you can tell, I am thrilled. He did say the stone had a veil and so would not proform as well as it could without the veil.
It looks nice to me. I think I have a ring to put it in. Sorry I can''t do pictures.

So to everyone who made comments I want to thank you all. I was ready to send it back.

Annette

Smit,
You're very welcome, but it was Blithsome who first recommended Jerry to me. I have to say that my mint tourmaline has the most wonderful facet work, and I'm thrilled with it. I'm so happy you're happy with your recut. I have not used Jerry for a recut, only for cutting a piece of rough, but that's good to hear that he was able to close up the window for you and not lose much in carat weight.

Can''t do pics .. you are such a tease!

Smit you are welcome. Have to say though I didn''t do anything but remember reading someone else being happy with his work. But however it came together, the PS system worked! I''m glad that it all went so very smoothly. Can you post his website address so we can cross reference more easily in the future please?

Because I have seen Jerry’s cutting, I believe you when you say that the recut is amazing. I only wish I can see pictures of it.

Hi All,

I am posting gem cutter Jerry Newman''s Web address. GEMART SERVICES-- [email protected]

I asked Jerry Newman if it was OK to post this and he said , "yes, of course".

I am very happy to have found him. I know we have other cutters on this forum, but none of them will do recuts, or partial recuts for members. So people, here is a good resource.

Chrono-- Can you imagine not changing the dimensions of the stone?

Thanks Again,

Annette

When only the pavilion is recut, the face-up dimension of the gemstone is always almost unchanged.

Hey smitcompton! I couldn't get your link to work. Is this the right site: http://www.gemartservices.com/ ?

I'm glad to hear your recut turned out so well.

Sorry to threadjack, I (or DH) chipped my Mahenge spinel on two crown facets (see black dot), is it worth getting it recut? It''s pretty tiny but I''m crushed about it. Will I lose a lot of weight? At the moment it is 2.02 ct.

I’d let it go if it is very small. I’m sorry about the damage but sometimes, these things happen. Eventually, over time, most gemstones will show some wear and tear (abrasions, facet wear, etc) as well. You want to preserve the face up size and the 2 ct mark if the damage isn’t noticeable when viewed with the naked eye.

glad it worked out smit..recutting or fixing a stone always seemed difficult to me..i had a hard enough time just dopping a piece of rough on..heck..trying to line it up on an already cut stone for minimum weight loss takes skill

I really wouldn''t mess with it right now, since you may get more over time and you don''t want to be recutting with every little ding. If it really bugs you, I would recommend just having a new tier of facets placed directly next to the table that would basically bevel the area of the chip while removing it. It would change the way the corner tiers of facets meet, (they wouldn''t reach the table anymore), but it would remove the chip with minimal loss and look as if it was that way from the beginning. It would also be very inexpensive, as it would take longer to dop the stone than it would to trim and polish it.

Thank you Chrono and Michael_E for the advice. I''ve been too ashamed of my clumsiness to ask for help on PS. That''s also the reason I stopped looking at setting it at the moment.

I would love to see your dem recut smitcompton, green is my favourite colour!

It''s at the 2 carat mark so I would leave it alone. You could ask Jerry for his professional advice too.
