I just got back from another whirlwind wedding planning weekend in Texas, and this one included an engagement party with about 250 of my mom''s closest friends. I told FMIL to consider it a wedding preview because she was completely overwhelmed. It was actually kind of a low turnout because there were 4 other events going on that evening in town that competed. I did learn, however, that my mom can''t do math. She told me she invited about 400 people, but when I looked at the guest list spreadsheet, it had 392 lines... that said "Mr. and Mrs."!!! I said "MOM! You invited 400 COUPLES!! That''s 800 people!!!" She was stunned. Good thing they didn''t all show up... the room was kind of small. And continuing the numbers issue... when I looked through the list I noticed a lot of people were still missing from it. She''d forgotten her cousins and many of the business people that I actually know and would like to come! So now I''m looking at ordering 550 invitations... shudder.... I''m hoping that for many people they''ll be more like "announcements" but I''ve been told we HAVE to invite them. It''s been a bit of an issue.
The party WAS fun though we''ve definitely ruled out any possibility of a receiving line at the wedding. All we did for the majority of the party was shake hands and say "Hi, thank you for coming! It''s so nice to meet you/good to see you again." It was exhausting!!! I did have mom put out a guest book though so I could know exactly who was there. I didn''t get but a bite of food at the party, and only half a glass of wine as it made me start to sweat and ugh, I didn''t want that! I did know a lot of the people there, and everyone was so nice. We even got a few gifts, which isn''t common at Southern engagement parties.
One of my bridesmaids came and took a quick pic of us beforehand! We didn''t plan to color coordinate like that, but it worked out.
The rest of the weekend was cake tasting, tux selection, etc.... all with FMIL in town. My mom handled her VERY well.
