I have a waterman mechanical pencil that my parent''s gave me when I started university just broke. I use it every day! I am so sad.

Does anyone have a favorite that they can recommend - I need a replacement ASAP!

I forget what they used to be called - they discontinued them and then replaced the model Twist-Erase Frost.
Hate the name. It sounds so kindergarten. But it''s a great pencil. I prefer the .7 over the .5

It has perfect grip, and the most awesome eraser. Great diameter. I just love love love it!

YES I do! The Koh-i-noor Rapidomatic 0.7, 5637. I''ve had mine since college and I love it. I did a heck of a lot of drafting with it and since we all share the office I guard it fiercely from my husband and kids!

Sorry to hear about yours.

I have a Mont Blanc fountain pen - anyone know if they make mechanical pencils?

There's a German company called Lamy that makes EXCELLENT quality pens and pencils. I'm addicted to their fountain pens. The designs are very slick and modern.

And then there's always Tiffany...

Here are some of the Lamy pencils so you get an idea of the style. Hello Gorgeous! I love the one in the middle on the right, and the thin one on the bottom left.

After a mini meltdown (my pencil is my life - I use my fountain pen to sign stuff, but otherwise I use a pencil), I went to the shop in my building. I did not like the Mont Blanc that they had - a little too traditional. So I went with a Graf von Faber-Castell with in sterling silver and red/orange corral, similar to the type in the pic below. Yummy!

Here is my red coral pencil - it appears more orange in real life, which I quite like...

Why can't you replace it? Waterman is a well known brand, and is available online. Also, it may be repaired possibly, depending on what's wrong with it.

ETA: Yes, Mont Blanc makes pencils too, but the resin is delicate. So if you drop it, it's dead. Expensive and dead. There are just tons of excellent brand names out there. Have a look at Pelikan.

I might be able to steer you to an online place that is competitively priced.

My sympathies...hubby is a pen nut. I am just at the computer ordering a new shipment for him. If he runs out of ink before it arrives...all systems will shut down. Melt down. It will be horrible.

Hope you get therapy if you need it. I am really not making lite of your situation...just adding understanding support.

LC, is it not fixable at all? I''m sure you''ve already tried, but I used to have this hobby of fixing everyone''s pens and pencils as a kid. Yeah, strange, I know

Ahem. Anyways, there aren''t that many parts in a mechanical pencil, so as long as a piece isn''t physically broken, there might be a chance it can be fixed?

If it''s really done for good, what say you to a virtual RIP ceremony on PS? I''ll throw eraser dust as it leaves...

I''m sorry that your favorite pencil broke. I write with just the most boring, cheapy pens and pencils, but DH *adores* his pens. I dread the day when we have enough money that he can get a really fancy one as I''ll be drug into the research process I''m sure ;)

IG - those Lamy pens are really pretty. I love the top left and middle left.

Wow! Gorgeous choice, LitChik.

Thanks everyone. The waterman was toast - it had a good life (13 years of almost daily use!) and was beyond repair.

I tried using the Pentel pencil from the supply room. I almost through it across the room - crap! I needed a solution and I needed it fast. Luckily, I think I have done okay with my new Faber-Castell.

Now, what does everyone else write with??

Might I suggest this:

Just kidding...I really like the red-orange one you posted. Is that one not a keeper or is it just a stand in until THE pencil comes along?

The Faber-Castell is not a "stand-in", Addy. I expect it to last the next 10 years....

It''s beautiful. I didn''t mean to insult you by asking if it was the pencil for you. You just said that you pencil was your life so I wasn''t sure that something you found so quickly was it for you or if you were continuing your search.

No offence taken, Addy. Just thought it was a little "interesting" to consider a Faber-Castell a "stand-in". Actually, I am pretty decisive on most things, and I really felt comfortable with this pencil quite instantly. No need to scour the city looking for something better!!!

I''m not well versed in pens so the name means nothing to me. I just took in the fact that you nipped down the local and thought you may still be searching as well.

I hope it''s as comfortable as your previous pencil was

Hah, hah. That's a whole other can o' worms with me.

I have a fountain pen collection of over 30 pens. Plus a paper collection to go with it, as well as more inks than I can keep track of. I've got custom nibs on just about every one of the pens too. I've got a couple that I've never even used. Most are new, a few are vintage. Most have 14kt or 18kt gold nibs. It's just like jewellery really.

I love the Yafa Quadro... LINK

It comes with a o.5 lead, black ball point, highlighter and stylus in one pen. I took out the stylus and replaced it with a blue ball point refill. It has a nice weight and comfortable to use.

SENSA is a really nice brand, too. The grip area is squishy and comfy.

For a cheapie mech. pencil, I like the Paper Mate Clear Point.

ETA: Hmm... I forgot to scroll more.... had I done that I would see you already chose one! I sent my Waterman pen through the washer and dryer

I love those pens!

Thanks, Sera - I love my Waterman pens/former pencil as well, but this new pencil is really awesome. I was working last night, and it is, dare I say, a better fit for me than the old waterman!! Pencil Upgrade!!!

I use good ole #2 pencils. I have a battery operated pencil sharpener on my desk, and a Pink Pearl eraser that has gone hard. Need to nip down to my local office supply store and replace that baby.

Hubby uses mechanical pencils, but they have never worked for me. I press so hard I destroy many of them almost instantly.

Flygirl, that''s why you need 0.7 mm leads, and not the standard 0.5 mm that those regular mechanical pencils have. I have rarely broke a lead when I write.
