I labsolutely ove this forum! Everyone is so very helpful and caring! I have lurked for quite some time and have finally mustered up the courage to join. I love that PS has areas to talk diamonds, e-rings and jewelry AND these great support forums like the LIW threads!!

We have begun our ring talks, yeaaaah! J and I have been together for a little over a year and are definitely absolutely positive that we are meant to be together. We have gone through many hurdles throughout this past year that I believe that someone has a plan for the two of us. He is the most amazing man I have had walk into my life, I love him, love him love him!!! I''m sure if he had it his way, we would have been engaged the night we first met! lol!

He is trying to be chilvalrous and be secretive and surprise me with a ring that he has chosen on his own. (Bless his heart!) However, our differing ring styles are clashing a bit! We went browsing last weekend and have come to the conclusion that if Snap-On Tools, Yamaha, or Chevy had engagement rings available for purchase he would totally nab one up right away! lol!!! He leaned more towards blingtastic settings with big stones, where I am more of a minimalist. He seems to be ok with upgrading and trading the ring in at a later date, whereas I am one to keep things - I''m very sentimental about stuff like that! His thought is "Well, if you don''t like it, you can always trade it in!" My Grandma STILL has ver very first ring she ever received from my Grandpa and wears it to this day! I would love to have a solitaire e-ring and be able to dress it up or down with fun bands.....we have a little on on the way next spring so a birth ring would be a GREAT first stacker! :)

Is it rude of me to want to try and help guide him? I am well aware that a guy''s mindset to surprise us is a thing not to be toyed with, but ladies, what are your thoughts? Have any of you "chosen" your own ring? How did your fiancee/hubby feel about it?

Anywho, I am very excited to join the PS community! Hopefully I will have something pretty of my own to post someday in the future!!

Welcome!

It''s definitely not a bad thing for you to want to guide your BF to something that you like--you''re the one wearing it after all!

Have you pitched the idea of a solitaire and stackers?

Or maybe you could compromise on something in the middle:
a solitaire with a simple pave or channel-set band?
a 3-stone ring for more finger coverage without being too over the top?
a larger stone in a unique cut (like a pear)?
something oblong that you can set east-west (like an oval or some rectangular cusions/asschers/radiants)?

My SO and I have had ring discussions and he is big on the element of surprise but I am big on picking my own things. His money and my money will become OUR money and so I don''t want *US* to spend $10K or whatever on a ring and not LOVE it.

The solution: he can plan whatever grand surprise proposal he wants but can only do so with a placeholder ring. Think along the lines of a ring with engraving on it with the date or some simple wording or just a unique design. Then we''ll pick out the e-ring together.

And is it rude of you... I don''t think so.

vc10um, yes, I have! We visited our area''s Tiffany & Co. He has the mindset that a solitaire = THE solitaire. The 36k pricetag that came along with it was enough to make him change his pants on the spot, lol! I am checking out other replica options... He thinks that if he is going to spend X-ammount of dollars on a ring, he wants to get the biggest bang for his buck! I wholeheartedly agree with this, it''s just trying to mesh our tastes!

MissPrudential, I love that idea! That is unique and your guy still gets to plan and surprise you!! I guess I never really looked at it in the "if you spend that much, I would hate to not love it" way! The more and more we talk about the ring, and choosing something, the more I feel he is very traditional, and wants to do it the right way. Most of his buddies who have popped the question have done so on their own with a mall-jeweler ring and have gone into it with little to no education at all. Not that there is anything wrong with their choices, their fi''s/wives are very happy with thier sets! However, I am very VERY grateful that he has asked for a little help in that department! :)

There are plenty of places that do Tiffany-style solitaires. Just search for styles with 6-prong heads and a knife-edge band!

I saw on the ideal ring thread that you had said something about a halo-ed "old" style cut... That may be a great compromise for your solitaire mindset and his blingy style. You get the single stone, he gets the extra bling, and everyone is happy!!!

You are in the right place! Start doing your research. I learned you can not only get more for your money but also get a million times better quality diamond w/ the help of pricescope!

Welcome by the way
